The ten matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed during the week. The 10 winners joined the 22 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place yesterday, Friday 25th August. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2017-18. Most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 12th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the UEFA Champions League Final will be played, after almost 8½ months, on Saturday 26th May 2018 at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, Ukraine. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Tuesday 5th December and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 13th February 2018. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points
default
full-time
upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts),
however, you receive the WS score if it's more than the aways.
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point ... or 1 of 2 if we have 12
or more runners, 1 of 3 if we have 18 or more runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus points will be used. |
Deadline: is always kick-off in the first game of the round. Please don't wait until the death, as this year's comp has two teams from eastern Europe, Russia and Azerbaijan (see next post), and there's a good chance you'll get it wrong! If you post your tips 3 hours before the scheduled kick-off time for games in the UK, you should be safe. If that game in the East has kicked-off when you lodge your picks, you will score zero for that game. A total of 79 teams, from the 55 UEFA member nations, qualified for this year's competition (no team from Leichenstein*) .. 22 direct to the group stage (inside the white rectangle below) and five to the play-off round .. 15 of the other 52 teams progressed through the three qualifying rounds, to join the five who qualified direct to the ten play-off round games (those 20 teams are outside the white rectangle). . Everyone from last year is back for another dose except for three no-shows: AlonsoKing,illiniman14 and nasty_liar. We snared zero new recruits, to make it a field of 15 runners.
Week 1 of 19 saw three of the eight games picked by 15 of 15, aka everyone .. and all of us hit pay dirt with every one of them. One game was picked by 14 of 15 and yet another by 13 of 15, which gave us eight weekly winners with 6/8 .. that's more than half the field! At the other end, srini701 collects the 1st wooden spoon on offer with 4/8.
Between us we scored 68.3%, which is the highest-ever strike rate for the 1st week of any UEFA tipping comp since the first one 14 years ago, way back in 2003. It's the 9th highest for any round (see numbers in red in Record Book above). Most of those eight above this week's effort had a perfect pick by one of the tippers .. here we achieved 68.3% without any perfect picks.
N-Bomb and wwe84 scored a bonus point each for picking the upset win by Sporting in Athens. They share the lead, 1 pt in front of the other six weekly winners.
The next round will be played in your neck of the woods either this afternoon or tonight or tomorrow morning, as the case may be: UEFA ( 2 ) Wed 13th Sep.

Round 2 saw two games picked by everyone and two games picked by no-one.
Dizart and wwe84 score back-to-back weekly wins to lead the way. Dizart is a point in front as he's scored more bonus pts .. toocool4u was the other weekly winner.
At the other end srini701 collected back-to-back wooden spoons. LeoDaVinci collected the other wooden spoon.
Three pts cover the first nine, and 3 pts cover the remaining six players.

. Our picks were unanimous for 4 of the 8 games and hit pay dirt with all of them. Between us we averaged 70% (equals 5.6/8), which is the seventh-highest strike rate since this comp started some 14 years ago, way back in 2003 (see Record Book above).
We had three weekly winners with 7/8 correct. George95 joins Dizart & wwe84 out front to make it a three-way tie .. and they are the only players with two weekly wins .. illiniman14 & PaulE were the other two winners .. gtho4 collected the wooden spoon.
toocool4u was the only player to score a bonus point.
Last week 6 pts covered the entire field: 3 pts covered the first nine and 3 pts covered the remaining six players. This week it's still 6 points but 3 pts now cover the first 10 players, and 3 pts covering the other five.

. We had an interesting set of picks this round: four of the eight games were unanimous 15-0-0 or 0-0-15 (three hit pay dirt & one was a dud), and two of the other four were unanimous bar one (both hit pay dirt) .. and the remaining two were both 12-3-0 duds.
When the dust settled we all scored 5/8 except for three of us .. ElfTwinkle and George95 were the weekly winners (it was back-to-back wins for ElfTwinkle) and Sypher collected back-to-back wooden spoons.
Dizart sees his lead trimmed to 3 points. The next 3 points covers eight runners. From there it's a 3 pt gap to the rest of the field, who are covered by ... 3 pts! The top to bottom spread remains at 12 points.

When the dust settled seven of the 14 who rolled up collected a wooden spoon each, with 3/8. Last week's wooden spooner, Sypher (which was a back-to-back effort as he also collected a wooden spoon the week before), is this week's winner with 5/8 .. and the rest of us went 50% with 4/8.
Four of the seven collected their first wooden spoon: two out front, Dizart and ElfTwinkle, plus PaulE and paper_aero. This plugged another four holes in that column, leaving just four spoon-less runners. Sypher's win was his first, which plugged another hole and left just three still looking for their first win which, co-incidentally, matches the three holes in the bonus pts column.
Dizart sees his lead trimmed to 2 pts. The next 5 pts cover 10 runners. From there it's a 2 pt gap to the rest of the field, who are covered by 3 points (same as last week). The top to bottom spread remains at 12 pts for the third straight week.

. Unlike the previous round, when half the field collected a wooden spoon, this round has one weekly winner and one wooden spoon. George95 scored his 2nd win in three rounds to climb up into second place, a point behind Dizart (he was 6 points in arrears in 5th place two rounds ago). Dizart has been leader for the entire season except week one.
ozzz2002 collected the wooden spoon, and slips from second place down to 7th.
The two out front have put 3 pts between themselves and the peloton, where a mere 2 points covers 7 players. From there we have a 2 point gap back to the rest of the field. The top to bottom spread is out slightly to 13 points (it was 12 points for the three previous rounds).
We still have four spoon-less runners, three still looking for their first win .. paper_aero scored his first bonus pt, which leaves just two blanks in that column.

. Unlike the previous round, when we had one winner and one wooden spoon, this round has *six* winners with 5/8 and two spoons with 3/8. The rest of us, half the field, all scored 4/8.
There were two upsets, Dizart picked one and dg_dave the other. Dizart was one of the winners and, with that bonus pt for a solo pick, extends his lead out front to 3 pts. Dizart has been leader for the entire season except week.

The two winners picked the card with 7/8, apart from the upset in Switzerland, which was picked by no-one. Three players collect a bonus point for picking a draw: Howie72, srini701 and toocool4u.
Dizart retains the lead by a margin of 2 points over George95 (it was 3 pts last week). From there it's 2 pts to the peloton of 9 players (out of a field of 16), who are covered by a mere 4 points.
