Eww. The new required local avatar hosting changes transparent backgrounds to white backgrounds when it converts PNG to JPEG. Now there are white boxes around the avatars in pages that aren't white.

It breaks the a e s t h e t i c !

You have my sympathies. You can always try to convert a PNG to JPG elsewhere to try to preserve the transparent background and then upload it to FT. My complaint is that I like animated avatars, but the local hosting doesn't convert the animated portion to the correct size. Does anyone know or has anyone tried to upload an animated gif that was already the correct size to see if the animation was preserved?

You cannot have transparent backgrounds with JPGs, the format is not compatible. However, GIFs can use transparency and it is possible to convert PNG files to GIF format either online or using software like IrfanView.

But the FT avatar hosting converts GIFs to JPEGs when they're uploaded too. That's the problem--everything getting converted to JPEG.
