Wow, FunTrivia moments ago had 55,000 people arrive at the site via google query "What country is called Down Under?", the most we have ever had in a one minute period in the site's 20 year history.

Does anyone know where this question was asked?

( I am amazed to report that the server didn't even break a sweat during that insane burst of traffic either. Incredible how good the hardware has gotten over the years! )

I found this in 'AskFT', from July 2008

It was probably not human traffic. Signups don't show any particular spike around the time, although there was one single signup actually from the question.

One would think with 50,000 people, more than one would want to stay and at least try playing.

No, it was definitely human. Could see the query strings from a bunch of search engines.

You'd be surprised re: signups. If people are looking for a quick answer to a contest question, they nearly never sign up.

I just wonder how many people actually searched if 55,000 clicked through. I made the search and the answer is easily seen from the Google page. Also, at least on my result page, our link was only #3.

Unless of course those 55k were mostly browser-prefetched pages from the results.

Still a fascinating spike.

A question like that seems like it is was from a TV quiz show or talk show where the first viewer with the correct answer that calls in wins a trip to whatever Caribbean island survives this hurricane season.

Wow, 55,000 people didn't know the answer to that question? Society is doomed.

To be exact, 55,000 people didn't know it and thought no one else would know it either so they would actually still have a chance after spending 15 seconds on Google.

Or they were just checking to make sure there wasn't a trick answer.

Or we're doomed.

My bet is on one of those questions sometimes seen in the ad breaks on commercial tv: text the correct answer to this (really dumb) question to...... How many beans make five? A. 3333 B. 5 C. 2020. I often wonder how many people choose the wrong options, I bet it's quite a few.

Suppose Terry had come and reported that the site had received a massive number of visitors all from one query, but instead of asking, "What country is called Down Under?", the 55,000 people instead had this question: "What's an algorithm for determining how to slice any kind of rectangular parallelepiped with integral sides into unit cubes using the minimum number of planar cuts if you allow rearrangement of the pieces between the cuts?"

What would we all be saying THEN?

(That was my implied point, though we'd all be doomed for a much different reason. *smirk*)

I am used to seeing sudden spikes from TV shows. Stuff on CNN usually creates maybe 10,000 people. So this was something huge. Perhaps the Today show in the U.S. or something like that.

And yes, it is perplexing how so many people don't know that, lol.

I've just taken another look at signups - they have been picking up in the last hours.

It looks like this was concentrated in India - that's certainly one very large TV audience!

I wonder if it was the audience question on the Indian (Hindi) version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?". That would probably explain it.

Not really too surprising to me...only one country has a higher population than India...and that is China ,which, according to the link below, is only about 55 million more. I can see why a spike to a point...as the population of India is a staggering 1.32 billion residents. Source here.

I'm not sure what we'd be saying, but it's an interesting question, anyway. My follow-up question to that would be, "How difficult is it to rearrange the previously sliced pieces in order to minimize the number of planar cuts, and is it worth the effort?" I run into this problem with cheese. It may take fewer cuts if you stack the pieces, but it's not worth the effort.

The site did go down briefly yesterday, for a few minutes around 5.30 p.m. UK time. I couldn't get on and checked with one of the 'down for everyone' sites which confirmed it was down. It didn't last long but may have coincided with that influx. If I ever get to grips with time differences, I might know whether or not it did, but I've never been able to work them out.

That would have been about 10pm India time, rossian. You're 4½ hours behind them during summer time, and 5½ in winter.

Good point about them phrasing the question. They should have put the word "country" in. Otherwise people may have started thinking physiologically smile

My down under, ie, is the part upon which I sit.
