Australian Soccer
A-League
2017-18
Tipping Competition

A-League football (soccer) is back for another year so get your names down and your dartboards out for another lucky dip.
The rules as the same as last year:
  • Threads will close prior to the start of the first game.
  • A bonus point will be awarded for a perfect score.
  • Bonus points will also be awarded for anyone that tips a result solo.
  • Ties at the end of the season will be broken in the following order:
    1) HoF/Spoon differential
    2) Most Hall of Fame awards
  • Picks of all home games - not eligible for any bonus points.
  • Default will be equal to the lowest score each round.
  • Late starters will be given a score equivalent to the last-placed active tipster.
The first round starts on Friday 6th October. The weekly fixture lists have been posted. Most rounds will kick off on Friday evening local time and threads will close just prior to that time (there are a couple of rounds which start on a Thursday).

This year's comp will be the 13th A-League season. Will N-Bomb be the first three-peat? He's the only payer to win this comp more than once (last year, the year before and four years ago). All will be revealed over the coming months.

Welcome to the 2017-18 tipping competition of torture, aka the A-League soccer competition. This year we have 12 runners: we welcome back 11 of 13 from last season and 1 new victim. MrFox and illiniman14 are no-shows and we welcome LeoDaVinci to the nightmare A-League tipping season.

In a replay of last year's grand final Melbourne Victory lost 0-1 at home to Sydney FC, the defending titleholders, courtesy of an own goal. Six players picked the away win .. the five of us who picked a draw were robbed! George95 picked a home win by Victory.

Although Newcastle Jets finished bottom of the table last year, four players picked them to win away at Central Coast Mariners, who'd lost 16 of 27 last season and 20 of 27 the season before.

The defending titleholder, N-Bomb, is going for a three-peat .. he won last year's comp by 12pts and the one before by 11 pts! He was one of the four who picked 4/5 for the weekly win. They're a single point in front of the peloton.

FussBudget collected the sole wooden spoon and is bringing up the rear, all by himself. There were no bonus points awarded.

Week 1 saw us average strike rate above 50%, with 33 correct out of the 60 picks lodged by 12 players.

  • After a first round loss, Brisbane looed like they would get their season started at home when leading Adelaide 1-0 after 86 minutes but the Reds stunned their hosts with 2 goals before the final whistle to emerge victorious. Western Sydney twice came from a goal down to draw with Central Coast but could not take advantage of a late Mariners red card to find a winner. The first Melbourne derby of the season saw City claim bragging rights over Victory in a game typical of the situation with 8 yellow cards handed out but surprisingly no red cards. Newcastle were very close to making it 2 wins in 2 games when they lead Perth heading into stoppage time at the end of the second half but it was a former Newcastle striker who scored his second goal of the game in the 92nd minute to steal a point. Sydney never looked convincing and got lucky when they accounted for Wellington in Sydney, a horrendous off-side call (the player was onside by about a metre and a half) cost the Phoenix the chance a deserved draw when they would have had a two-on-one with the Sydney goal keeper with just minutes to go and then had a header cleared off the line. Sydney held on to leave them with 2 wins from 2, last season they only conceded 2 goals in a game once but only took 2 rounds this season for it to happen.
  • We welcome illiniman14 to the madness that is A-League tipping, he may have missed week 1 but that means nothing in this competition. Being a late starter he begins on 1 point, level with FussBudget.
  • ElfTwinkle missed the Brisbane vs Adelaide match due to late tips.
  • After last week's good results were slipped back to a typical round as we went 19/64, saved only by the assistant referee in the Sydney vs Wellington game which we all tipped, but for the wrong off-side call it would have been 6/64. As it was, we had a strike rate of 29.68% with the Western Sydney/Central Coast draw being the only game which no one got correct. One of us was the only one to pick both the Adelaide and Melbourne City wins and that is ozzz2002.
  • As a result of those 2 solo picks ozzz2002 earns himself the weekly win with 3/5. We welcome illiniman14 with a gift of a wooden spoon but he was not the only one to receive one as LeoDaVinci, Howie72, srini701, gtho4, George95, N-Bomb and ElfTwinkle also went 1/5 (1/4 in ElfTwinkle's case), leaving the spoon makers scrambling to provide more spoons.
  • As a result of 8 spoons, including his co-leaders from round 1, Sypher takes a 1 point lead over 5 others. At the bottom, illiniman14 finds himself all alone but things can change drastically in any given week.

  • For the third week in a row Adelaide conceded within the first 15 minutes but for the third week in a row they were not beaten as they drew 2-2 at home to Melbourne Victory. Melbourne City kept their 100% record but only just as they beat a Wellington side that once again did not deserve to lose as they piled on the pressure but could not score. Sydney only conceded two goals in a game once last season but they did it for the second time in 3 matches this season as they came back from 2-0 down to draw the Sydney derby 2-2 with Western Sydney. Newcastle finished with the wooden spoon last season but their 2-1 victory at Brisbane keeps them unbeaten to start this season, Brisbane thought they had done enough to earn a point but their second half equaliser went to the video replay and was deemed to be offside. Central Coast started strongly at Perth and should have been a couple of goals up before they finally took the lead, these early misses came back to haunt them as the home team won it with two late goals.
  • illiniman14 was running on default fuel this week.
  • Our topsy turvy season continues as we had a good round and went 29/60 for a 48.33% strike rate. We all managed to tip Melbourne City's win at home over Wellington Phoenix. Another bonus point was awarded as srini701 was the only one to give Newcastle a chance of winning away at Brisbane.
  • After the first 15 games of the season the results are a tad on the even side with 5 home wins, 5 draws and 5 away wins.
  • Last week we had 1 weekly winner and 8 wooden spoons, this week it was almost the reverse as we had 6 weekly winners and 1 wooden spoon. The weekly wins went to wwe84, paper_aero, Sypher, Howie72, gtho4 and ElfTwinkle with 3/5 while ozzz2002 went 1/5 to earn the solo spoon.
  • With his wooden spoon, ozzz2002 finds himself overtaken for the lead by Sypher while ElfTwinkle and paper_aero joining him in a tie for second. At the bottom, illiniman14 goes default and remains at the foot of the ladder.

  • Sydney completely dominated Perth to remain unbeaten and were awarded 3 penalties, only 2 of which they could convert. The scoreline flattered the visitors as it was only superb goalkeeping that kept the scoreline at 2-0. It was a classic game of two halves in Wellington as the Phoenix took a 3-0 lead into the break only to sit back in the second half and allow Brisbane back into the game and tie it up at 3-3, both teams still looking for their first win. Two goals inside the first 20 minutes ended up being enough for Melbourne City to overcome Adelaide as well as a sending off on the hour mark. Western Sydney dominated Newcastle for most of the game but it was the Jets that finished the stronger and equalised midway through the second half. Neither side could find a winner leaving Newcastle unbeaten. Central Coast's game against Melbourne Victory came to life in the second half as both sides scored a goal each. the Mariners hit the post twice in the final 20 minutes but it ended in a stalemate.
  • illiniman14 was running on default fuel this week.
  • We reached the A-League magical mark of a 50% strike-rate this week as we went 30/60. We all managed to tip Sydney's win at home over Perth. Only Sypher thought Central Coast would draw at home to Melbourne Victory and as a result he earns a bonus point.
  • Sypher and srini701 had the best rounds as they went 4/5 for the weekly win while N-Bomb and Howie72 were the opposite, only getting 1/5 and each taking home a spoon.
  • Sypher extends his lead and with the help of the bonus point, pushes it out to a healthy 3 points after 4 rounds. The next step on the ladder is jointly held by ozzz2002 and srini701. At the bottom, illiniman14 goes default and remains at the foot of the ladder, 3 points behind Howie72 and FussBudget.

  • In the battle of the top 2 in the standings it was the sky blues of Sydney that came out on top, a 59th minute goal deciding it and leapfrogging Sydney to the top of the table. Newcastle attacked from the start against Wellington and the only surprise was it took 37 minutes for them to score at that was from a horrendous Welloington error. Wellington never looked like getting back into the game and it finished 3-0 to the hosts, consolidating their 3rd place. The Adelaide goalkeeper kept them in the match away to Perth, including an early penalty save but his efforts were in vain as Perth scored late to take the win after laying siege to the Reds goal. Superb goalkeeping and missed chances by both sides saw a stalemate in Brisbane as the Roar and Central Coast battled out a goalless draw. In a game that had just about everything it was Melbourne Victory that went down a player after Mitch Austin picked up a stupid second yellow card and Western Sydney made them pay soon after to take the lead into halftime, it could have been more had they not missed a penalty. That proved crucial as did a superb one on one save early in the second half as Melbourne equalised in the 49th minute. Despite thrilling end-to-end action neither side could break the deadlock.
  • We had a full house this week as we welcome back illiniman14.
  • This would was just a tad better than last round as we went 33/65 for a strike rate of 50.76%, it seems like we are starting to get (well, most of us) a half-grip on A-League tipping. No game was tipped by all though 12 of us all picked Newcastle to beat Wellington, ponly Howie72 put misguided faith in the Phoenix. The trickiest game to tip was Brisbane's home draw with Central Coast where just 4 of us tipped this.
  • Another double weekly win round as both paper_aero and gtho4 went 4/5. Howie made it back to back 1/5 wooden spoons. No bonus points were awarded this week.
  • Sypher maintains his 3 point lead with paper-aero pushing ozzz2002 off the podium and joining srini701 in second place. At the bottom, illiniman14 picks a good day to return as he climbs to within 1 point of Howie72.

  • Central Coast their win over the defending champion Sydney, they largely shut down the sky blues and scored decisive goals when they were needed. The Mariners captain was sent off near the end but it did not affect the result. Last season Newcastle could barely get a result but after their come from behind win at Adelaide they moved into top spot in the standings unless Melbourne City win the final game of the round. Melbourne Victory looked on target for a much needed win when they took the lead at home to Brisbane in the 79th minute but it was not to be as the Roar hit back 5 minutes later to leave the match even at full time. In a thoroughly entertaining game it was Wellington that put 5 past Perth after conceding the first goal, the Phoenix would have been concerned when Perth made it 2-2 just after half-time but they responded for their first win of the season. Western Sydney remained unbeaten after Melbourne City came from behind to draw 1-1. The Wanderers have now drawn their last 5 games after an opening win.
  • We had a full house this week.
  • I had to mention last round that most of us were starting to get a half-grip on A-League tipping as the football fates decided we should not be getting too confident. This round sees us go just 11/65 or 16.92%. The "easiest" game to tip was Wellington's home win over Perth though just 5/13 got this correct. Two games had no correct tips being the Central Coast upset win over Sydney and the Melbourne City home draw with Western Sydney.
  • As you would expect by a 16.92% strike rate the weekly win was nothing to write home about as wwe84, FussBudget, George95 and gth04 all went 2/5. It must be one of the worst spoon weeks ever though I have not gone back to check as we had 6, I shall say it again....6 wooden spoon recipients who went 0/5, not one correct tip among paper_aero, LeoDaVinci, Sypher, illiniman14, N-Bomb and ElfTwinkle. No bonus points were awarded this week.
  • After this round we have just illiniman14 without a weekly win and wwe84 without a spoon.
  • Sypher sees his 3 point lead reduced to 2 points by srini701 with a group of 4 a further point behind. At the bottom, illiniman14 drops a further point behind Howie72 and is now 2 points adrift.

I've noted this week's paltry numbers in my "worst numbers" file.

  • After conceding a goal to Central Coast after a late first half penalty, Adelaide came back in the second half to equalise and then score the dramatic winner in the 3rd minute of stoppage time to ruin the home fans' night. Brisbane got their first win of the season at home against a sloppy Melbourne City, the Melbourne City goalkeeper gifting the third goal as he allowed a free-kick to slip through his hands. The pitch at Spotless Stadium in Sydney was deemed to be a "risk to the player's safety" so the match between Western Sydney and Wellington was postponed. Sydney overtook the previously unbeaten Newcastle Jets at the top of the standings after a hard fought 2-1 win at home in the rain. Two second half goals from Melbourne Victory were more than enough for them to see off Perth in Perth and record their first win of the season, in doing so the Victory moved off the bottom of the table.
  • We had a full house this week.
  • We had a better round in week 7 than week 6 but still nothing to get excited about as we went 16/52 or 30.76%. It was just as well Sydney beat Newcastle or it would have been worse as 9 of us predicted this. Every game had at least 2 correct tips.
  • Sypher had a very good week in going 3/4 to take the weekly win. For the second week in a row the wooden spoon went to tippers who failed to get any correct though it was in just 4 games this week. The three who went 0/4 were srini701, George95 and illiniman14 with illiniman14 backing up his 0/5 from last round. No bonus points were awarded this week.
  • After this round we still have illiniman14 without a weekly win and wwe84 without a spoon.
  • Sypher and his weekly win doubles his lead to 4 points over ozzz2002 who has replaced srini701 in second place with a group of 4 a further point behind. At the bottom, illiniman14 drops a further point behind Howie72 and is now 3 points adrift.

  • Melbourne Victory scored early away to Newcastle but Newcastle did not take long to draw level, it then went horribly wrong for Melbourne when they lost a defender to injury and another sent off for a headbutt. The home team then put another 3 goals past the Victory to continue their impressive start to the season, temporarily going back to the top of the table. It was just as bad for the other Melbourne team as Perth visited and left with their first away win in 8 games after losing the previous 7, Melbourne did not help themselves with a player being sent off. Central Coast were dominant against a woeful Wellington Phoenix in recording a superb 4-1 away win, the first side to win in Wellington this season. Sydney showed no ill-effects from their FFA Cup final win in midweek as they outclassed the visiting Brisbane team in Sydney it got nasty with 15 minutes to go after an altercation with a Sydney player reacting to an alleged spit from a Brisbane defender, both players were duly sent off. The Roar are now winless in their last 7 matches. The other FFA Cup finalist also had a win this round as Adelaide accounted for Western Sydney despite also having a player sent off with less than 15 minutes left.
  • This week we went 18/65 or 27.69%. For the second week in a row there were no draws and if it was not for Sydney beating Brisbane we would have had to hang our heads in shame....again. Two games were not tipped correctly by anyone, being the Perth and Central Coast away wins.
  • Sypher made it back to back weekly wins with 2/5 and was joined by wwe84, gtho4, illiniman14, Howie72 and ozzz2002. We made it a hattrick of wooden spoons with no correct tips as this time FussBudget went 0/5. No bonus points were awarded this week.
  • After this round we still have wwe84 without a spoon, illiniman14 filled in the weekly win column with his first (of many he would hope) of the season.
  • Sypher and ozzz2002 both had a weekly win so the gap between the two remains at 4 points, wwe84 and gtho4 knock srini701 and paper_aero off the podium as there was never enough room for 4 on bottom. At the bottom, illiniman14 remains 3 points behind Howie72 as they both had a weekly win.

  • For the second time in 10 days Bobo scored the winner for Sydney against Adelaide, this time it was just before half-time rather than in extra-time in the FFA Cup final. Adelaide had periods of play where they dominated but could only register one shot on target and Sydney remain at the top of the ladder. Brisbane snapped their 7 game winless streak with a morale boosting win at Western Sydney after goals each side of half-time, at the same time consigning the Wanderers to their own 7 game winless streak. It looked good for Newcastle to continue their strong form when taking the lead over Melbourne City after a dominant half an hour but the visitors came back to score the winner in the 86th minute. It was a thriller in Wellington as both teams missed wonderful chances in end-to-end action but it was the Phoenix who took a 2-0 lead into the break. However it was a round of Melbourne comebacks as the Victory replied with 3 goals in the second half to take the win. Central Coast did enough to outfox Perth with a late goal sealing the win and moving them into 4th place.
  • This week we went 28/65 or 43.07%, a much improved performance. For the third week in a row there were no draws and this time N-Bomb benefitted as I will explain below. Only FussBudget failed to tip Sydney's win over Adelaide while no one thought Brisbane would win away at Western Sydney. N-Bomb was the only one who thought Melbourne City would win at Newcastle and picked up a bonus point as a result.
  • N-Bomb does not tip draws very often and though he only got 1/5 last round, this round he made up for it with an impresive 4/5 to take the weekly win. FussBudget made it back-to-back 0/5 spoons, the 4th week in a row the wooden spoon has not resulted in a correct tip.
  • After this round we still have wwe84 without a spoon.
  • Sypher leaps out to a 6 point lead, he now cannot see anyone in his wake. I would hate to think what nasty things are happening on the second step of the podium as there are now 6 jostling for position, being ozzz2002, wwe84, gtho4, srini701, paper_aero and N-Bomb. N-Bomb has moved up from 8th to 2nd in one round which shows he now thinks he has given the leaders enough of a head start and has started his charge for a third consecutive title. At the bottom, illiniman14 reduces the gap to 2 points behind Howie72 and FussBudget.

  • It was a drama packed match at Etihad Stadium as Adelaide stunned their hosts with a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory despite having 2 players sent off in the final 10 minutes, Melbourne will be rueing a penalty miss plus the inspired form of the Adelaide goalkeeper. The Victory remain winless at home this season. Some good goalkeeping, some poor finishing, plenty of huff and puff but Brisbane's home game against Wellington ended in a goalless stalemate though it was the visitors who looked the better team. The Sydney derby did not live up to the hype as Sydney outclassed Western Sydney by 5-0 and the Wanderers were lucky not to lose by more, it is the biggest Sydney win in the derby. Perth looked like they had their match at home to Newcastle sown up as they approached the 90th minute with a 1-0 lead but the Jets equalised in the 88th minute and a Perth own goal two minutes into stoppage time handed the win to the visitors. Melbourne City were frustrated at home against Central Coast as they went into the break goalless but they scored the important first and only goal in the second half to take home the 3 points though it took a crucial block of a goalbound shot in stoppage time to keep the clean sheet.
  • This week we went 26/65 or 40%, a tad down on last week. The run of rounds without a draw ended and the away teams had the better of the round. No games were tipped by everyone with Sydney's win at Western Sydney being the closest with 11 correct tips. No one thought Wellington would get any kind of result away to Brisbane so there were no correct tips. George95 was the only one to predict Adelaide's win at Melbourne Victory so he earns himself his first bonus point of the season.
  • We had three weekly winners as Sypher, ozzz2002 and illiniman14 all went 3/5. On the flip side we also had three winners but wwe84, FussBudget and srini701 all take home a spoon with 1/5. This makes it a hattrick of spoons for FusBudget but he manages to avoid a hattrick of spoons without a correct tip.
  • The wooden spoon column is finally filled in as wwe84 earns himself his first spoon.
  • Sypher maintains his 6 point lead with ozzz2002 throwing his weight around to break away from the 6-way tie for second to take over that spot by himself. We still have a 3-way tie for third. At the bottom, illiniman14 catches up with FussBudget, Howie72 can feel them breathing down his neck.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Sydney made it 22 games in a row unbeaten at home with a tightly fought win over Melbourne City, 2 goals just before halftime turned the game in their favour after Melbourne had scored first and a goal 6 minutes into stoppage time sealed the victory. Newcastle's dream season continued after an 89th minute penalty won it for the Jets over Adelaide, they close the gap to 5 points on Sydney. Western Sydney got their first win under their new coach with a comfortable 2-0 win at Central Coast, any thought of a Mariner's comeback was stopped after the video assistant referee decided two tackles were worthy of red cards rather than yellow cards so Central Coast finished with 9 players. Perth did enought to beat Wellington 1-0 at home, this time keeping the 1-0 lead after conceding 2 late goals last week. Two goals in the first 20 minutes from Melbourne Victory proved too much for Brisbane to overcome, the Victory moving back inside the top 6.
  • We had a good round this week as we went 40/65 or 61.53%. We all tipped Sydney to beat Melbourne City. The trickiest game to tip was Western Sydney's away win at Central Coast which only LeoDaVinci and N-Bomb tipped.
  • We were back to a round without any draws and that suited N-Bomb as he picked the lot to go perfect with 5/5 and earn a bonus point, his second of the season. FussBudget made it 4 wooden spoons in a row and is joined by Howie72 and ElfTwinkle with 2/5, the best spoon score of the season so far.
  • Sypher sees his lead cut back to 5 points as N-Bomb races past ozzz2002 into second place with ozzz2002 dropping back to third by himself. At the bottom, illiniman14 catches up with Howie72 with FussBudget being a point behind.
