We are going to upgrade the entire site over the next few months with a modern, clean look that is entirely mobile friendly.

The "Quiz detail", "Play Quiz", and "Submit quiz" screens are now being tested with this new clean look. Please let us know if you run into any issues.

Thanks
Terry

Terry:

I think on the player-authored quizzes the "you have already played this quiz" line really needs to be a brighter red. it is over on the side and--at least to me--almost unnoticeable. Aside from that, everything else looking good so far.

Is it the same skin you recently started using in the Ask FunTrivia section?

http://www.funtrivia.com/ask.cfm

Answered my own question by trying to play a quiz. It is the same.

http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/General/Our-Schedule-for-the-Future-344912.html

Seems fine to me. Definitely clean looking and I can see where it would be more mobile friendly. Only thing I worry about is sometimes efforts to make a site look "clean" can end up making it look generic. Would hate to see FunTrivia lose it's quirky personality that has drawn in a lot of us players.

I think that's very nice, Terry. I haven't tried it on my phone yet but on my laptop it looks very clean and sharp.

The red "You have already played this quiz" looks paler because the other main text in that section is all emboldened so anything else will look lighter than it actually is. I'm not a great fan of bold text but in this case perhaps the red does need to be emboldened. The alternative would be to move the phrase to another section, e.g. the top section under the Author's name, but a long quiz title would probably mess the spacing up and that wouldn't look good.

Maybe we could even play with a colored element for "already played" ? I know the site is very blue and has always been, but I could imagine using green for an already played quiz and maybe a golden color for one of my own? Players would notice the connection quickly and it wouldn't have to rely on words alone. (Of course the words are still needed to help our visually impaired players using a screen reader or Braille display)

No need to worry about that. The site is so massive and complicated from 20 years of development that I don't have time to de-quirk the site even if I wanted wink

I'm pretty much pouring what we've already got into a brand new, clean 2017 container.

I will do a little reorganization, particularly on the sprawling homepage, to try to simplify everything and make the site more accessible to new players.

Glad to hear that. cool

And thanks for not asking for specifics. It's one of those things that is hard to put into words, but you know it when you see it. wink

The quizzes I've already played have always had a green band over the text in a category listing. I've never seen it red

In AskFunTrivia for the last while, when I click on a link under an answer for related questions, the page I'm taken to not only looks like something from the late 1990s but I see ads on it. There have been times I've seen ads pop up on the front page too. As a member with a little yellow star by my name, it has become an odd sight for me to see an ad no matter how fleeting the appearance is.

And, yes, I'd like to play crosswords on my iPad too.

Can you please post a URL of a page that displays an ad to you?

Next time I see an ad I will post the URL here. Please change the profile pages back! I admit I barely glanced at mine but I do not like it!

I'm not sure if everyone has the quiz screen changes yet, but the profile screen looks similar in style. Everything is getting updated to look more streamlined and modern. I personally like the changes.

Edit: Having said that, the profile name and image looks a little wonky on mobile.

On the profile pages, one perk is we get to pick a background color. Now our choice is only shown around the avatar and the very thin edges of the page. The top with personal comments, hobbies, etc. is the sterile light blue that is all over the site. The bottom two thirds is now a glaring white. The ability to personalize our profile pages a little bit with color is now gone.

Okay, I found the "You have already played this quiz" line in red. That looks fine to me. But taking a quiz! The answer choices are in that glaring white. Then we get the info and answers and there is that glaring, eye strain inducing white page again.

At the bottom of the answer page, where the previous scores are listed, that information is so tiny. The box where we can rate a quiz or send a comment to the author, the size difference in fonts makes it look very unbalanced. Is it that important that quizzes be rated that we see Please rate this quiz ?

I really, really, no REALLY don't like the change to my profile. I'm a "blue" girl by nature, as a color choice, not a mood, but that's a lot of very sterile blue, with "gray" around my avatar, so that my name is barely legible. Black was my chosen color, and now I'm just gray around the edges -- not a good look for anyone, real or imagined.

I play on a laptop. Update and streamline like the wind, but might you please leave our profiles alone? It's the only place I actually have a few choices, and now my choices are mostly gone. No way am I staying "gray around the edges!"

I've checked out a few other profiles, and they all look wonky to me, too, with colors only around their avatars, and not accurate colors. I loved my black as my chosen background color!

Please, I am begging you, "Don't Mess With The Dress!"

The profile page is most certainly a work in progress and not finished. I'm sure it will look a lot better soon!

I agree with MiraJane and Blackdress on the profile page. My colour is blue, also, and while it looks washed out, at the same time it is very bright. Other colours work better. The very round fonts bother me, too.

In general, the page looks a lot less "stylish" than the old one.

I guess we can wait for the finished product, as Wes said, but it definitely needs improvement.

The new set out looks a bit retro. I don't like retro.

But, if it enables mobile users to access games, etc., I can handle it. Everyone should be able to access the site, on any device. If it means that we have to go retro, then I can handle it smile

Far from using the retro aspect again, but I'm playing the Nemesis game against someone. When I looked at my opponents profile page I needed a pair of sunglasses.

It's bloody orange and yellow! Are they colours they always used, or is it because of the changes?

If it isn't anything to do with the new changes, I think someone needs to talk to them about hues, or tinting smile

A link-related matter I noticed... from my profile page, if I click the "Quiz" drop-down menu and click a category, it'll send me to the correct top-level page for that category, but once I'm there, the header will change from my username (and "Logout") to the "Free! Register New Player - Log In" text.

I agree. Really took me by surprise. shocked

Aside from the colors, I'm not too keen on being forced to use pull-down menus. I have opted to turn them off in my settings, and so I would be really grateful if this feature could be preserved. cool

Also, I have a question. I do like the idea of making the site more accessible to mobile users, but why make web users use a mobile site?

This is not the intent. The intent is to have a site that scales for both.

I’m also under the impression that profile colour options will continue to exist, but we need to get the scheme down first.

We obviously don’t want to lose the look and feel of FunTrivia, but I’m always a fan of us progressing to a newer, more modern look.

Just noticed on Match quizzes the answer choices need to be stretched just a tad to fully fill in the rectangles in both sections of the Match quiz. By stretched I mean the light blue surrounding the answers does not fill the box completely.

http://www.funtrivia.com/playquiz/quiz3896252c9a1c0.html

Also not a fan of that shade of light blue. But that's just me. What is that? Periwinkle?

Terry:

Thanks for darkening and making the lettering for "you have already played this quiz" much thicker.
It is so much better now! No searching or wondering.
