* These horses are yet to pass the 2017 Melbourne Cup first ballot clause at 23 October 2017 https://www.punters.com.au/news/hartnell-remains-in-melbourne-cup-contention_163497The 2017 Melbourne Cup is edging closer and with each passing week we're seeing new horses emerge as key contenders. The leading hope at this stage is none other than last year's Cup winner Almandin. His 2nd-up win at Flemington in September was simply breathtaking and he looks to have come back an even better horse. But the chances run a lot deeper than that with some high-class internationals making the journey out here, including Red Cardinal, Francis Of Assisi, Marmelo and more!
Melbourne Cup 2nd Acceptances were taken on Monday 30 October, which has seen the number of horses in contention cut from 55 to 36. It's made the Cup picture a lot clearer but we're still a fair way off knowing what the composition of the final field will be. And with so many key lead-up races still to be run we're likely to see the pecking order chop and change so make sure you pay close attention to the Melbourne Cup Order of Entry - it's the best guide there is on which 24 horses will comprise this year's Melbourne Cup field.
Keep checking in here because we'll be adding to this list as more leading Cups contenders emerge from the pack.

- Faith and begorrah! Irish horse, Rekindling, won from another Irish horse, Johannes Vermeer, with Max Dynamite making a trifecta for the Emerald Isle.
- Seven tipsters, out of 11, tipped the winner, with ElfTwinkle and gtho4 both adding on the next three placegetters. These two had to armwrestle, and our Canadian lass won! N-Bomb finished a short half-head away in third.
- Tiebreakers were needed for fourth, fifth and sixth as well.
- Behind that bunch was a large gap to the rest of the field, some of whom are still just crossing the finishing line.
- The Race That Stops a Nation will be back again next year- reserve your seat quickly.
