Visually, I prefer the old format, as far as readability. The actual squares were larger, and in the new display, almost all the letters get cut off (at the bottom). I think one thing the old layout "did better" was that it made the actual size of the whole crossword quite large (it filled most of the screen), whereas the new crosswords seem kind of crowded into a much-smaller square. Even if I use my browser's (Firefox) text or page-display zoom, the size of the letters -- and the crossword itself -- don't get any larger.

That said, visuals are very much a matter of personal preference. I don't know how feasible it would be, but I wonder if it would be possible to have a 'visibility' option for the crossword pages (e.g., click Small / Medium / Large to adjust the crossword's display size so that people who need or want a bigger -- or smaller -- display can choose the view that suits them best).

The only other thing I'd add is that unlike before, the keyboard arrow-keys don't let me manually move "across" squares.

They both worked fine on my iMac. No letters were cut off.

Will the Gold Member perk of being able to print them out be added later?

For what Verbonica says below, they started on hard mode for me; I switched to easy on the second one. Maybe change "On Easy Mode" to
'Easy Mode" to avoid confusion?

Looks great on desktop w/ both Firefox and MS Edge browsers. Noticed that Easy Mode is the default... it used to be the Hard mode. Some challenges require Hard, I don't know if people will foul up by not seeing it.

Hard mode is default, the button text is confusing.

I'm having the same issue as MrNobody with the letters getting cut off at the bottom. I'm using Windows 10 with Firefox.

Other than that, I really like the new interface. I find it MUCH easier to enter letters. I love crossword puzzles, but with the old interface, I found it tough sometimes to actually get the letters to enter into the grid.

Thanks for the hard work!

I tried it on my phone, using Chrome on Android 6.0.1. For me the crossword grid is distorted - much wider than it is deep and the individual boxes are the same shape, probably about four times as wide as deep. As a result, letters are cut off near the top and it's impossible to tell if some are correct or not. For example, where the answer was "CHURCHILL" I could tell from the curves that the C, R, and C were in the right place but the tops of the H and the U looked very similar and I couldn't distinguish between the I, L, and L at all. Which is a problem on a phone because it's harder to type the right letters in the first place!

On my phone, the across clues pop up in highlighted mode at the bottom of the screen until the last few which I have to scroll down for. The down clues all have to be scrolled down to, then back up to the puzzle for insertion of answers.

On my laptop, it works fine and I really appreciate the higher visibility but can you please somehow activate the tab and arrow keys for those of us who simply find alternating the mouse and keyboard extremely tedious. Thanks Terry.

One thing that seems to be missing is the author's name, and the rating (Easier, Harder), that used to be at the top with the intro.

Will the Special Instructions box work now?

Will anything change from the editing and/or creating side?

I find the stark black and white a bit harsh on the eyes, but I like the bolder highlighting of the word being entered. I'll get used to the other.

I'm using a Chromebook and it's working okay. I'd like to see the display a little larger if possible.

A couple of things I don't like are advancing to the beginning of a word after the last letter is entered and having to backspace to remove a letter rather than using the space bar.

I noticed that the letters don't quite fit in the boxes. In the flash version, the boxes are plenty big, but in the new interface the bottom edge of every letter is cut off.

I noticed the issue in several browsers on Ubuntu 14.04 (laptop):
  • Firefox ESR 52.5.2 (64-bit)
  • SeaMonkey 2.49.1
  • Pale Moon 27.6.2 (64-bit)
  • Opera 49.0.2725.39 (though not quite as bad)

In these browsers, I could see the whole letter, but it was off-center, not centered like the Flash version
  • Brave 0.19.105
  • Waterfox 56.0
  • Basilisk 2017.12.03 (64-bit)

I used normal zoom and maximized screen for all of these.

In Pale Moon, the keyboard shortcut for fullscreen is F11. When I try to use this in on the crossword test pages, however, it inserts random letters in the crossword boxes. Makes getting fullscreen and maximizing puzzle size – which I need to do because the puzzles are much smaller and change in size with screen– much more difficult.

Workaround is to go fullscreen in another tab, then use Ctrl+Tab to return to puzzle tab. It's a little awkward and it would be nice if page wouldn't intercept F11 key. I've never had a problem going to fullscreen at any other website.

(Pale Moon 27.6.2, Ubuntu 14.04)

UPDATE: I notice the crossword page interferes with all the keyboard shortcuts that involve the function keys: F6, F5, etc.

Functionality is great except for the fact that the cursor jumps back to the start of the word after the last letter - it makes fixing an accidental extra letter harder than just staying at the end.

Visually, I'd prefer darker or slightly bolder lines between the boxes, they're almost invisible for me.

Thanks -- I'll pass these on to the developer who is finishing the game off.

I'm seeing a couple of the issues (distortion of puzzle on iphone in landscape mode, for example) too.

Overall it looks pretty cool though, and should make for a nice replacement.

Author, etc info will be added when it goes live. Am worried about the puzzle part itself right now.

I don't see the grid. All I see is some clues on the right hand side and a small keyboard on top of screen. Trying to use the keyboard on screen has no effect. Can only see five clues for across and down.

For the second link, I am able to scroll through clues but till no grid or use of keyboard.

I use Chrome on Windows 10 and it works fine. Only the option to delete a letter which seems inappropriate is missing.
(Sometimes I fill in a word I believe is correct, only to find when entering a crossing word it is wrong. And in that case I prefer leaving the wrong letters blank until I have filled enough other words to go back and ahve another try.)

I'm not sure if I'm interpreting this correctly, but if so, I agree.

Looking at the old crossword style, the background is a nice purplish-blue, which is easy on the eyes. Now the background is white -- too white -- which is hard on the eyes. I'd love to see the background be made a different color.

Also, the clues are too far away from the grid compared to the old design.

Can the issue I posted about the interference with keyboard shortcuts be addressed?
It isn't just in Pale Moon but also in any browser in Linux: Opera, Firefox, etc.

In Chromium-type browsers (Chrome/Chromium, Opera, Brave) I am able to make F11 work, but the puzzle "catches" the other shortcuts and prints random letters.

In Mozilla-type browsers (Firefox, Waterfox, Pale Moon, etc.) I can't even get F11 to work, much less the others. Just random letters.

I've got two iPads. Yes, the one I checked the links on is from when iPads first were presented to us by the mighty Apple. I'll check it on the newer one once Princess and Quentin, especially Princess, wake up. Right now it is under the pillow they've been sleeping on all afternoon.
