Visually, I prefer the old format, as far as readability. The actual squares were larger, and in the new display, almost all the letters get cut off (at the bottom). I think one thing the old layout "did better" was that it made the actual size of the whole crossword quite large (it filled most of the screen), whereas the new crosswords seem kind of crowded into a much-smaller square. Even if I use my browser's (Firefox) text or page-display zoom, the size of the letters -- and the crossword itself -- don't get any larger.
That said, visuals are very much a matter of personal preference. I don't know how feasible it would be, but I wonder if it would be possible to have a 'visibility' option for the crossword pages (e.g., click Small / Medium / Large to adjust the crossword's display size so that people who need or want a bigger -- or smaller -- display can choose the view that suits them best).
The only other thing I'd add is that unlike before, the keyboard arrow-keys don't let me manually move "across" squares.

They both worked fine on my iMac. No letters were cut off.
Will the Gold Member perk of being able to print them out be added later?
For what Verbonica says below, they started on hard mode for me; I switched to easy on the second one. Maybe change "On Easy Mode" to 'Easy Mode" to avoid confusion?

I'm using Windows 10 with Firefox. Other than that, I really like the new interface. I find it MUCH easier to enter letters. I love crossword puzzles, but with the old interface, I found it tough sometimes to actually get the letters to enter into the grid. Thanks for the hard work!

I noticed that the letters don't quite fit in the boxes. In the flash version, the boxes are plenty big, but in the new interface the bottom edge of every letter is cut off. (click to enlarge)I noticed the issue in several browsers on Ubuntu 14.04 (laptop): - Firefox ESR 52.5.2 (64-bit)
- SeaMonkey 2.49.1
- Pale Moon 27.6.2 (64-bit)
- Opera 49.0.2725.39 (though not quite as bad)
In these browsers, I could see the whole letter, but it was off-center, not centered like the Flash version - Brave 0.19.105
- Waterfox 56.0
- Basilisk 2017.12.03 (64-bit)
I used normal zoom and maximized screen for all of these.

In Pale Moon, the keyboard shortcut for fullscreen is F11. When I try to use this in on the crossword test pages, however, it inserts random letters in the crossword boxes. Makes getting fullscreen and maximizing puzzle size – which I need to do because the puzzles are much smaller and change in size with screen– much more difficult.
Workaround is to go fullscreen in another tab, then use Ctrl+Tab to return to puzzle tab. It's a little awkward and it would be nice if page wouldn't intercept F11 key. I've never had a problem going to fullscreen at any other website.
(Pale Moon 27.6.2, Ubuntu 14.04)
UPDATE: I notice the crossword page interferes with all the keyboard shortcuts that involve the function keys: F6, F5, etc.

I don't see the grid. All I see is some clues on the right hand side and a small keyboard on top of screen. Trying to use the keyboard on screen has no effect. Can only see five clues for across and down.
For the second link, I am able to scroll through clues but till no grid or use of keyboard. Mirajane, you're using some very old ipad arent you?

I use Chrome on Windows 10 and it works fine. Only the option to delete a letter which seems inappropriate is missing. (Sometimes I fill in a word I believe is correct, only to find when entering a crossing word it is wrong. And in that case I prefer leaving the wrong letters blank until I have filled enough other words to go back and ahve another try.)

I find the stark black and white a bit harsh on the eyes, but I like the bolder highlighting of the word being entered. I'm not sure if I'm interpreting this correctly, but if so, I agree. Looking at the old crossword style, the background is a nice purplish-blue, which is easy on the eyes. Now the background is white -- too white -- which is hard on the eyes. I'd love to see the background be made a different color. Also, the clues are too far away from the grid compared to the old design.

Can the issue I posted about the interference with keyboard shortcuts be addressed? It isn't just in Pale Moon but also in any browser in Linux: Opera, Firefox, etc.
In Chromium-type browsers (Chrome/Chromium, Opera, Brave) I am able to make F11 work, but the puzzle "catches" the other shortcuts and prints random letters.
In Mozilla-type browsers (Firefox, Waterfox, Pale Moon, etc.) I can't even get F11 to work, much less the others. Just random letters.

Yes, the one I checked the links on is from when iPads first were presented to us by the mighty Apple. I'll check it on the newer one once Princess and Quentin, especially Princess, wake up. Right now it is under the pillow they've been sleeping on all afternoon.
