Badges aside, I do think the crossword authoring deserves recipes and ingredients for the kitchen. (We even count them a bit awkwardly for QuiWriMo, after all.)

I agree with this even I don't write quizzes or crossword puzzles smile

A big part of this is that for a long time, crosswords were restricted to certain authors.

Right, authors who had completed a few successful quizzes. And it wasn't many - 5 or 10 or so? - just to prove they could write coherently.

More badges isn't my point here, just an observation, but crossword authors get zero points for writing a puzzle. Zero. And no Kitchen ingredients. Where's the carrot (metaphorically speaking, of course)?

No points either? Not fair! Absolutely they should get points for writing crossword puzzles!

As someone who both writes crosswords and has three recipes that require only a carrot I would be completely on board with crossword authors receiving ingredients (particularly carrots).

Reference the lack of recognition for crossword authors, I can only speak for myself. I have now compiled well over 200 for publication on the FT boards, and my reward is knowing that I have perhaps provided good quality puzzles to the best of my ability. Of course it is also gratifying to receive the odd complimentary message from those who have solved the crosswords.

Whilst I would of course welcome additional recognition for these efforts, it would make absolutely no difference to my submissions, which will continue at the current rate for as long as I am able. As I have said, the real reward here, is the inward sense of accomplishment every time another crossword has been successfully engineered!

This may have been noted, but I tried to do a crossword on my iPad that included numerical characters in the grid. I was not able to enter numerals.

Other than that, I am very happy to be able to do crosswords on my iPad. I would love to be able to save my work.

Can you recall what crossword that was? I've always been under the impression that we don't allow numerical characters in the grid, and I'd like to check that out.

Perhaps it was in a crossword where the answer was something like "King Edward VII" where numerals should be substituted for appropriate letters? I seem to recall having used this method on more than one occasion in the past when compiling crosswords, particularly when searching for possible crossing answers.

That would have the letters (VII) in the grid, though, would it not? I'm almost certain that I have never allowed a puzzle to go online with 7, or any other number in the grid. I remember having discussed the possibility with fellow editors, but not ever having implemented this.

Agreed, I've never submitted a crossword requiring cardinal numbers to be used, nor have I ever seen the practice elsewhere.

I've never seen it done anywhere either, and I don't think it would be a good idea.

That's why I'm so sure we don't allow it, and would like to know which puzzle caused the original problem. I'd like to fix it somehow, or take it offline.

That's too bad, really. I like cross number puzzles, where the clues are also numbers. That's not really trivia, but a crossword puzzle where all the answers were numbers would be quite interesting.

1 across: Battle of Hastings
1 down: Great Fire of London
Etc.

The new crossword layout that doesn't work on my android tablet Chrome or Firefox, I tried on a friend's up to date android tablet too and no go there either.

It had also not worked on my puffin browser but now it does if I switch to desktop view on puffin -- the funtrivia keyboard is gone but I can get the old puffin keyboard back so I can do it the old way. Phew!

Something strange just happened

I realised that I had two letters wrong in a Down answer that affected one letter of the Across answer. I clicked on the mutual wrong letter and did not realise that I was going across rather than down and put in two letters, looking up at the last moment to see what I had done. Before I could do it right the puzzle submitted and I got the full points.

When the crosswords became available for iPad use, I played 11 of them. Then life got in the way and I didn't go back to the crossword page until today.

Now an old problem has returned. I can't see the clues!

What do I use? It's further up in the thread. I'll get that info for the inevitable question.

Previous info:

Newer iPad: clues do not show up at all. Safari, version 9.3.4 (13G35)
Older iPad: clues appear, nothing after happens finishing crossword. Safari, version 5.1.1 (9B206)

Hrm. I'm using my newer iPad because I was looking at a video which I can't play on the older iPad. I guess the No Clues problem still exists for the newer version of everything.

Ah, yes, the problem with the old iPad has reared its head. While I can see the clues, the puzzle doesn't submit.

I don't remember how I was able to do crossword puzzles earlier. But once again, I'm unable to do them.

For anyone still reading, I've been able to finish two crosswords tonight! I think I've figured out how to make this work.

Glad to hear you're having some success. I'm really not sure why it doesn't work on the older iPads. How did you manage to get it to work?

It does work on the older iPad. It's the newer one I can't see the clues on. I did the usual when something doesn't work - close all other windows first then when that didn't work, reset the iPad and hope it works. Then it worked.

When in doubt, turn it all off then turn it on and hope it worked.

I think the new crossword format is a great improvement - much more user-friendly. Have been doing lots more crosswords since it was introduced. Before I found the whole thing soooooo frustrating. Thank you for the improvement.

I think the new crossword interface is a huge improvement over the old one - much more user-friendly. It has encouraged me to complete far more crosswords than I used to - I found the old interface totally frustrating.
