Badges aside, I do think the crossword authoring deserves recipes and ingredients for the kitchen. (We even count them a bit awkwardly for QuiWriMo, after all.)

The point is that crosswords have never had an equal status with quiz authoring A big part of this is that for a long time, crosswords were restricted to certain authors. Right, authors who had completed a few successful quizzes. And it wasn't many - 5 or 10 or so? - just to prove they could write coherently. More badges isn't my point here, just an observation, but crossword authors get zero points for writing a puzzle. Zero. And no Kitchen ingredients. Where's the carrot (metaphorically speaking, of course)?

Reference the lack of recognition for crossword authors, I can only speak for myself. I have now compiled well over 200 for publication on the FT boards, and my reward is knowing that I have perhaps provided good quality puzzles to the best of my ability. Of course it is also gratifying to receive the odd complimentary message from those who have solved the crosswords.
Whilst I would of course welcome additional recognition for these efforts, it would make absolutely no difference to my submissions, which will continue at the current rate for as long as I am able. As I have said, the real reward here, is the inward sense of accomplishment every time another crossword has been successfully engineered!

Can you recall what crossword that was? I've always been under the impression that we don't allow numerical characters in the grid, and I'd like to check that out.
--- Spanishliz - Editor in Crosswords, Movies, Brain Teasers and Geography Perhaps it was in a crossword where the answer was something like "King Edward VII" where numerals should be substituted for appropriate letters? I seem to recall having used this method on more than one occasion in the past when compiling crosswords, particularly when searching for possible crossing answers.

That would have the letters (VII) in the grid, though, would it not? I'm almost certain that I have never allowed a puzzle to go online with 7, or any other number in the grid. I remember having discussed the possibility with fellow editors, but not ever having implemented this. ---- Spanishliz - Editor in Crosswords, Movies, Brain Teasers and Geography

I've never seen it done anywhere either, and I don't think it would be a good idea.

Something strange just happened
I realised that I had two letters wrong in a Down answer that affected one letter of the Across answer. I clicked on the mutual wrong letter and did not realise that I was going across rather than down and put in two letters, looking up at the last moment to see what I had done. Before I could do it right the puzzle submitted and I got the full points.

I just played one from page 72 and it submitted with no problem.
