I have a question on when the current Global Challenge ends. Currently the Global Stats page says that the GC will end when we reach 100 immortals or 30 new immortals and that we have 39 immortals. However, 7 of the current immortals are playing hardcore. Should the game end when we hit 100 immortals including hardcore (which looks like it will certainly happen before we reach 30 new immortals) or should it end when we hit 100 immortals playing normal mode?

This link shows the total number of players in the Immortal Division right now (45). Of those, only five are new Immortals (four in regular and one in HC mode). I would think that the tournament would end (under the new rules) when there are a total of 100 Immortals in both regular and hardcore modes who already have Immortal status, or when there are 30 new Immortals (adding both HC and Regular new Immortals).

Of course, this is just my assumption, and confirmation from those who really know would be very welcome.

Hardcore never counted toward the 30 before in the rare instances when you had skeje going for the whole enchilada in one shot (playing hardcore when they didnt even have normal immortal)

And the intent of the shift was to compensate for the situation where the roster of preimmortsls in the top 100 was pushing further and further down the list. It wws decided not to systematically reduce the count of winners allowable but to let it ride so to speak...

the coding was only set up to look at the top 100 and the stoppage of play has always been manual by Terry so there actually was no change to the mechanism. This will just (almost surely) be the first time the top 30 not yet immortal players in the final standings spill off the top 100.

My only concern with it in general is that potential new immortals lingering around the 101-120 range may not realize quite how close they are and may give up and let off the gas unduly.

but in any case, the 100 count is not an arbitrary setpoint like the 30 new immortals is. It is just the practical endpoint of the current system. So it would seem to me unduly harsh to also count in the additional preexistng immortals from the hardcore players.

Nevertheless, I think that is how the 100 figure is being counted. The Global stats show the following:

Challenge Status
There are currently 63 players who have reached level 10 and become Immortals.
The global challenge comes to an end if this number hits 100.

There are currently 12 Immortals who have never won the Immortal badge before.
The global challenge comes to an end if this number hits 30.
There are currently 4136 players participating in this challenge.

The 63 includes both Regular and Hardcore players who had already achieved Immortal status and are now Immortals.

I guess when the challenge ends, we will see what the final criteria were.

I was actually hoping that someone like Terry or Wes would confirm which way it. I'm getting to be a couple of days away from hitting immortal as a hardcore but I don't necessarily want to do that if it will keep someone else from making immortal for the first time.

The Global Stats page appears to be drawing its numbers from the total number of players in Regular and Hardcore mode that are reaching Immortal status, instead of just the former.

http://www.funtrivia.com/minigame/globstats.cfm

Challenge Status
There are currently 75 players who have reached level 10 and become Immortals.
The global challenge comes to an end if this number hits 100.

There are currently 15 Immortals who have never won the Immortal badge before.
The global challenge comes to an end if this number hits 30.
There are currently 4160 players participating in this challenge.

There are really just over 60 players who have reached immortal in regular play, (and the number that counts is really 45 if you remove the ones who have reached it for the first time). Right now, it looks like it will end much quicker than it probably will, if the returning HC Immortals are not going to be counted in the 100 limit.

Thanks,

Sue

According to Terry's post above (#1196020) 100 immortals normal mode ends it. I have always been under the understanding that Terry must manually stop the GC when it reaches an end. Nevertheless, I wish that shuehorn's question above had been addressed, because the page she links to now shows 104 Immortals and still says the global challenge comes to an end if this number hits 100. Hopefully, there has been no change to automatically stop the GC based on a number, because *that* number is the wrong number, since it counts Hardcore Immortals.

I thought I remembered it being said at one point early in the discussions on how to handle the top 30 new immortals possibly rolling off the top 100 list, that the badging queue only looks at the top 100.

Am I misremembering and if not is that still the case? For instance..suppose it ends up that the person who ends up ranked #101 crosses into level 10 in that last set. Would they get the immortal badge?

Badging is done manually in case of Immortals / HC Winners and HC Immortals. We can handle a small spillover across the 100 mark with a bit of extra effort - recent graduations plus a copy of the top 100 page taken just before the game ends help.

And everyone who manages to cross the line in the last set is counted, correct?

Yes. If the standings are 29 new and 99 overall and then 70 more players were to cross the line on the last set, they'd all get the badge (after we figure out how to find them all smile )

We seem to have 32 new Immortals (as listed in the Global Stats). I assume the current set will be the last one.

I assume so as well, but since the code for automatically ending the GC is new for this round, we'll have to see if it triggers properly.

The afternoon set looks like it is up. Apparently the coding for automatically ending the GC has failed.

I pulled the standings, so if things are ended soon, we will have a fair placing near the top. (Anyone sneaking in before it's actually closed would still get the Immortal badge)

There is no code for automatically ending the GC. Just displaying the requirements.

I have closed the GC.

I've just compiled and crosschecked our winners for this 31st challenge which was the first to go past the 100 Normal Mode Immortals mark.

Congratulations for a total of 63 new badges, including a rare triple whammy (making Immortal, Hardcore Winner and Hardcore Immortal in one and the same GC) for sam388 go to:

This round's rating champs were Mooseflapper in normal mode (2085, Division 7) and daver852 in hardcore mode (1913, Division 9).

The medals were again split between three newcomers to the podium and three repeat visitors:

Normal mode
Gold: rossian / Trivia Bubbles / UK (8th medal)
Silver: DireWolf74 / Terra Nova / USA (FIRST TIME medalist)
Bronze: crossesq / Play For Fun / USA (FIRST TIME medalist)

Hardcore mode
Gold: pagea / Pi in the Sky / Costa Rica (FIRST TIME medalist)
Silver: WesleyCrusher / The Cat People / Germany (9th medal)
Bronze: TriviaFan22 / The Cat People / USA (2nd medal)

pagea's winning Hardcore score would have been good enough to narrowly beat DireWolf74's for a normal mode silver.

Badges will go out now, if you won one, you should have it within half an hour of this post, tops.
