Australian Open 2018Welcome to the FIRST comp of 2018! Roger Federer won the title last year as the 17th seed and went on to dominate the year along with another old warhorse Rafael Nadal. Will these two slug it out for the title again this year or will we finally see the new generation assert themselves? Serena Williams won the title last year but has since had a baby and may not even return to defend her title.....will the fluctuations continue in the women's section? Gerorge95 (women's) and gtho4 (men's) will try to defend the first titles for the year as play gets underway in Melbourne from January 15. Sign Up here if you want a shot at our title here and come back before Wednesday, January 17 (11 am Melbourne time, 6 pm FT time -1d) to get going. Tipping threads will be posted once the draws are made on Friday, January 12.Australian Open 2018 : Men's singles - Tuesday, Jan 16Australian Open 2018 : Women's singles - Tues, Jan 16

Maybe after 13 years, I ought to get into these tennis comps...since I play the year-long one that srini runs...lol.

- It turned out to be a good Slam start for the year. Defending champion Serena Williams did not turn up this year, but both the top 2 seeds made it to the finals, and Caroline Wozniacki won her first slam title. She's the new world number 1 too. Simona Halep has now lost 3 slam finals and still searching for her first.
- Elise Mertens from Belgium was the surprise run of the tournament, making it all the way to the semis. Angelique Kerber was a great pick at a lowly 21 seed, and she eventually made all the difference to our standings here.
- gtho4 picked both the finalists, he picked 6 of the 8 quarterfinalists, and had the most number of correct tips amongst us. But he is not among the medals! Reason is Kerber
gtho4 did not see her getting into the last 4 and that sees him settle for 4th spot despite all those impressive stats! - Our own defending champion from last year George95 took a break from the comp this year and N-Bomb wins his maiden Australian Open title with a good run, pipping paper_aero. Howie72 takes home the bronze. All 3 had Kerber in the last 4...
- wwe84 takes the first spoon for the year.

- Lets stop talking about Roger Federer...let's just acknowledge he's the GOAT (Greatest Of All Time) and leave it at that every time a Slam comes around
Marin Cilic did well to take the finals into a tight 5-setter, but the outcome was probably never in doubt in the 5th set. And Federer, who was supposed to be over the hill and just waiting to announce his retirement early in 2017, now finds himself with 3 Grand Slam titles in the last one year! - But the interesting stories in the men's section were elsewhere, with most of us probably getting carried away by the form of the returning Djokovic, Wawrinka and Nadal in round 1. Nadal did make it to the quarters, but the other 2 fell in round 4 and 3. Del Potro, another favourite amongst us here, also fell to Berdych in round 4. Alexander Zverev continues to impress everywhere except in the slams. Nick Kyrgios was good till round 4, but his time probably hasn't come too. There were 3 unseeded players in the quarters, 2 of who were never heard of!
- If it was Kerber in the women's section, it was Kyle Edmund who made all the difference in the men's comp. 3 people picked him here, and they landed the podium places. Fifiona81 kept faith in Dimitrov too, and that finally paid off. Fifiona81 takes home the gold medal for this year. Defending champion gtho4 and N-Bomb tied for second spot, but a perfect tie-break score gives gtho4 the silver, leaving N-Bomb with the consolation of a medal in both sections this year.
- We needed tie-break to separate everybody from 5 to 9. toocool4u avoided the traffic jam by coming last at a comfortable distance for the spoon.
- ozzz2002 and George95 skipped (missed?) the Australian Open but am hoping they will join us back at Roland Garros in May...till then, do join the Team tennis comp, everyone

After threatening to join the comps after 13 years, dg_dave finally didn't join By the time I remembered it...it was well into second round games.
