Team Tennis 2018 -- February to November 2018This will be the FIFTH edition of the Team tennis competition (Fed Cup and Davis Cup). 14 people took part last year (14 in 2016 and 2015 too). N-Bomb starts as the defending champion. He and srini701 are the only people to have won this comp so far (twice each). Howie72 has been on the podium in 3 of the 4 years to date. We will only pick the countries we think will win each tie from the list I will provide before each round. The comp will only have 7 rounds, but will run almost the entire year! The schedule for 2018 is: 1. Davis Cup World Group first round: 2-4 February 2. FED CUP World Group/World Group II first round: 10-11 February (advance pick for winner) 3. Davis CUP World Group quarterfinals: 6-8 April (advance pick for winner) 4. Fed Cup World Group semifinals; World Group/World Group II play-offs: 21-22 April 5. Davis Cup World Group semifinals and play-offs: 14-16 September 6. Fed Cup World Group Final: 10-11 November 7. Davis Cup World Group Final: 23-25 November Please let me know your interest by signing up here.

| Welcome back to the 5th edition of the Team Tennis competition. The same 14 who lined up last year are back...no additions, no drop outs...In some very eerie coincidences with the opening round of 2017, we again had only 15 matches (I noticed the schedule a bit too late in the day to add a 16th match ), we again hit the exact figure of 141/210 right as a group, and dg_dave again started his campaign with a spoon
The tennis itself continued to produce some quality theater. Serbia, Switzerland, Britain, and Japan without their top-ranked players all went down, 2 of them at home. France had to struggle against Netherlands, Germany "shocked" Australia away with Zverev proving to be the difference between the sides, while Belgium and Croatia sailed on with ease. In the Group I matches, Pakistan won against Korea, a result that only 2 of us saw happening here, while Sweden shocked the more fancied Ukraine.
srini701 and Howie72 take the round's honours, but srini701 is on top because of the sole pick bonus courtesy Pakistan. ozzz2002 also landed this bonus point and this time he was also not throwing his darts wildly. He's right there at the top. illiniman14 started with a bang, getting the first 11 matches right on the schedule before falling short in 3 of the last 4. Dizart and defending champion N-Bomb have started well too, missing only 3 matches each.
wwe84, gtho4 and paper_aero are giving company to dg_dave near the tail end and have some work to do to climb back in the year ahead.
The next round of comp will be the Fed Cup World group matches over the next weekend (Feb 10-11). Make sure you lodge your picks in time (with an advance pick for the winner).....note especially to George95 and illiniman14 who let slip easy podium places in 2017 after missing a round each

| 7 of the 8 home teams won over the Fed Cup weekend. Kristina Mladenovic led a 3-member France team to win, winning all 3 of her matches. Ashleigh Barty won all her 3 matches to lead Australia to a win. Germany was the only team to win away, "upsetting" last year runners-up Belarus even without their top players. USA and Czech Republic completed the semifinal lineup with easy wins over Netherlands and Switzerland. All of us have either France, Czech Republic, or USA as our advance pick for winner.
Dizart and gtho4 were the only people to pick Italy's win over a strong Spain, and they add to their tallies with a bonus point each. That extra point helps Dizart take over the lead too. George95 and paper_aero were the other 2 with a HoF against their names this round.
dg_dave continues to find his name in the red this season, picking up a second successive spoon. He has company this round with ozzz2002 joining him.
The next round of the comp will be over the weekend of April 6-8 with the Davis Cup quarterfinals and other Group I/II matches.

| The Davis Cup continues to bring out the best theater in all sport! This weekend was no exception. Defending Champions France went to Italy for the first time since 1977, having last won there in 1927, and without 2 of their top players. No problem. Lucas Pouille emerged the hero, winning both his singles to lead the French to an impressive win. Spain and USA both reached the semifinals for the first time since 2012, with impressive home wins. Rafael Nadal now holds the winningest streak in Davis Cup after winning both his singles. It still took the home hero David Ferrer to clinch the tie in the 5th tie. Croatia completed the semifinal line up with Marin Cilic in imperious form. Kazakhstan has now played 5 World Group quarterfinals, without ever reaching the semis.
There was plenty of drama in the Group I matches as well. India was 0-2 down, a set down and 2 points away in the tie-breaker from losing the tie in freezing conditions in China. From there, they staged an incredible comeback, winning the last 2 sets in the doubles, and the 2 reverse singles as well without dropping a further set. Leander Paes now has the world record for the most wins in doubles in Davis Cup history. Can India make it back to the World Group for the first time in 7 years? We will know in September. Russia was shocked at home by Austria (a win picked by only one of us here) and Bosnia pulled off an upset win over Slovakia. In the Americas, Argentina and Colombia both had to come back from 1-2 down to win their ties.
srini701 and Howie72repeated their round 1 HoF duet. srini701 managed a bonus point as well and is now at the top. George95 managed 2 bonus points this round and leaps over Dizart into second spot. illiniman14 defaulted the round and tumbles all the way down the ladder. paper_aero had a most forgettable round and he takes his first spoon and finds himself in a rare spot around the cellar.
The next round of the comp will be over the weekend of April 21-22 with the Fed Cup semifinals and World Group playoff matches.

| The Czech Republic proved once again why they are such a dominant force in the Fed Cup. Led by Petra Kvitova, they breezed past Germany to reach their 8th Fed Cup final of the last decade (srini701 is muttering beneath his breath for putting faith on 2 top 10 German players instead). They will play the defending champions USA at home in November. USA had a few jitters, but were still too strong for France.
The more interesting and closer matches happened in the playoff ties. Australia moved into the World Group for the first time in four years, Belarus managed to stay afloat, Switzerland ended a 3 year stay at the top and will be go down, while Russia will not feature in any World Group for the first time since 1997 after losing to Latvia!
4 of us had a near perfect round here and srini701 stretches his lead at the top to 2 points. The top 6 have now distanced themselves from the rest of the pack. paper_aero and illiniman defaulted the round and now find themselves in the cellar after dg_dave lifted himself off the bottom with a good showing.
Long break till September now and the next round of the comp will be the Davis Cup Semifinals and playoffs during September 14-16.

| With the ITF deciding to change the format of the Davis Cup from 2019, this has suddenly become the last year with the old format (and the last season of our competition too ) ... The new format in 2019 will see a "qualification" round in February featuring 24 teams, followed by a round-robin format of 16 teams in November (12 winners from February + 4 semifinalists from 2018) to decide the champion...
France and Croatia will contest the finals this year. France had it easy against a Nadal-less Spain, breezing to a 3-0 lead before dropping the reverse singles. Croatia, after going up 2-0 on the opening day against USA, found themselves at 2-2 after Sam Querrey upset Marin Cilic in the first reverse singles. It took a 5-set win for Borna Coric over a debutant to take Croatia through to the finals.
The play-off ties were more for determining the "seeded" teams for next February and there were no major upsets or surprises anywhere. Dominic Thiem was too strong for the Australians, while Switzerland lost at home to Sweden...probably the only upset of the weekend, which was surprisingly picked by George95 here for a bonus point.
N-Bomb takes the round's honours to stay in contention for a podium finish. ozzz2002 takes a second spoon. Our advance picks could well play a role in deciding the final placings...

Tie 1: Barbora STRYCOVA bt Sofia KENIN 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 Tie 2: Katerina SINIAKOVA bt Alison RISKE 6-3, 7-6 Tie 3: Katerina SINIAKOVA bt Sofia KENIN 7-5, 5-7, 7-5
Czech Republic won its 11th Fed Cup title with a hard fought 3-0 victory over USA. Barbora Strycova came from a set down to defeat Sofia Kenin in the opening singles. Katerina Siniakova - the stand-in Czech No. 1 in place of Petra Kvitova who was unwell - also endured a tricky encounter, before beating Alison Riske in the second tie to give the Czech team a 2-0 lead after day one.
The match of the tie came on day two - as Siniakova and Kenin went toe-to-toe in a rollercoaster of a match. Siniakova won after a match lasting three hours and 44 minutes to seal the home team's triumph. The doubles tie was not played, so everyone of us gets a free point in our comp here This latest triumph cemented Czech Republic's status as the dominant team of the decade. The team has won the Fed Cup title in six of the last eight years and has lost just two ties since 2011. 5 of us had picked Czech Republic to win when we lodged our advance picks back in February. Two of them, Howie72 and Dizart, are in podium position now. wwe84 was the only one of us who did not have either USA or the Czech in our advance picks. The Davis Cup finals in a couple of weeks will decide our final podium places as only 2 of the top 5 (srini701 and N-Bomb) have a live pick there....LeoDaVinci and ElfTwinkle are the only others with a live pick for the Davis Cup finals.

RUBBER 1: Borna CORIC (Cro) bt Jeremy CHARDY (Fra) 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 RUBBER 2: Marin CILIC (Cro) bt Jo-Wilfried TSONGA (Fra) 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 RUBBER 3: Pierre-Hugues HERBERT/Nicolas MAHUT (Fra) bt Ivan DODIG/Mate PAVIC 6-4 6-4 3-6 7-6 RUBBER 4: Marin CILIC (Cro) bt Lucas POUILLE (Fra) 7-6, 6-3, 6-3 RUBBER 5: Not Played
The 2 Croatian singles players, Marin Cilic and Borna Coric, were too strong for the French players and the raucous and vociferous home crowd....they did not drop a single serve in 3 singles matches and 9 sets....France had a consolation win in the doubles on the second day to keep the tie alive but at the end, Croatia are a very deserving winners of the LAST EVER Davis Cup played in the traditional format. N-Bomb had a bomb of a round but he probably played his cards a round too late....he leapfrogged both Dizart and Howie72 into the silver medal position behind srini701, who rode his advance pick to the title. Dizart and Howie72 were probably swayed by the venue of the tie like most of us, as they let slip a comfortable cushion over N-Bomb to slip in the standings.
With Davis Cup changing its format from 2019, it will be tough to have a competition here, so this comp here comes to a natural close. My sincere "thank you" to all who played this comp over the 5 years and supported me.
