This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2018 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses). Unlike last year the email doesn't displays your reg'd ID. The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website:
1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed. |
Link to comp at cbs: http://ftmm2004.mayhem.cbssports.combut if that doesn't work, try this link: http://ftmm2004.mayhem.cbssports.com/eIf you've sucessfully logged in, you will see this in the top LH corner of the screen: 2018 Comp FT- if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but please pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
- this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.
- please check your reg'd email address in your account settings/profile after you login.
This year's tipping comp is the 17th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp and, last year, N-Bomb became the first to win it twice .. silver and bronze went to LeoDaVinci (which made it three years back-to-back) and illiniman14. The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, and the winner of the 2015 comp, toocool4u, hold the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 16 comps in the post below this one) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp.

This year's Madness starts on Thursday, March 16 and the final is on Monday, April 3. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sunday, March 12. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponents since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985. Last Four play-in: Tue-Wed 13-14 March now aka First Four 1st Round: Thu-Fri March 15-16 2nd Round: Sat-Sun March 17-18 3rd Round: Thu-Fri March 22-23 4th Round: Sat-Sun March 24-25 Final Four: Saturday 31st March Championship: Monday 2nd April Final Four is at at Alamodome, University of Texas at San Antonio Deadline: cbssports.com will close the bracket of 63 picks at noon EDT on Thursday, March 15th. Good luck remembering your password (if you receive the email) or your ID (if you're reg'd but have changed your email address) .. and good luck registering if you're new! To confirm you're in and that everything's hunky dory, please post in the Group Message Board (it's in the Brackets drop-down menu). Rankings: http://www.ncaa.com/rankings/basketball-men/d1 and here: http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/rankingsGood luck to all of us; and may the best man or best woman win!

Last year's comp had 16 runners. So far 11 have signed in (ten returning plus BxBarracuda, who last played in 2015), which leaves these six from last year: George95, illiniman14, kevinatilusa, N-Bomb, yoyoandcigs and Sypher. These are the eleven so far: BxBarracuda dg_dave ElfTwinkle gtho4 Howie72 LeoDaVinci ozzz2002 srini701 terraroca themonarch toocool4u We will know the final field when cbs close the brackets on Thursday, which is two days away.

With half of the teams left to play in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Howie72 leads the way, missing only 2 games along the way. gtho4 and last year’s champion (and our first repeat champion) N-Bomb are tied for second only 7 points back. Behind them is a group of 7 within 15 points.
The best game of the day involved 6 Miami (FL) against 11 Loyola (IL). The MVC champions were highly talked about for being a prime choice for an upset pick, but Miami (FL) didn’t heed those warnings. They played evenly in the first half, tied 28-28. Miami (FL) was able to get their lead up to 7 early in the second half, but the Ramblers kept it close. They never actually took the lead back, until there were 0.4 seconds left, when an NBA-length 3-pointer went through the net and Loyola (IL) went up 64-62 for the upset.
The biggest upset of the day ended up being a pretty terrible game. 13 Buffalo went up against 4 Arizona, the Pac-12 regular season and tournament champion. Arizona only lost 1 game all year by more than 8 points, and that was to now-3 seed Purdue. Buffalo managed to go up 40-38 with a late 3-pointer at the end of the first half, but the second half was a much different story. Arizona went up 46-45, and were soon only down 49-48, but then Buffalo turned it on. Before you knew it, the Bulls were up 65-55, and extended it out to 89-64, before finally winning 89-68 in blowout fashion. This was the only game nobody got correct, and it ended up being the only Final Four pick we lost on the first day, since George95 had them winning their region.
Last year’s championship loser 4 Gonzaga found themselves in a struggle against 13 UNC-Greensboro. Gonzaga was up 9 points at halftime, and that expanded up to 12 points in the second half, but UNC-Greensboro kept chipping away at the lead. The Bulldogs stalled at 57 points, allowing UNC-Greensboro to score 8 straight and narrow the gap to 1. They tied at 58, 60, and 62, before UNC-Greensboro finally took the lead 64-62, but Gonzaga held them scoreless the rest of the way and scraped out a victory 68-64.
The player of the first day was 6 Houston’s Rob Gray, who scored 39 points against 11 San Diego State in a close 67-65 win. 7 Rhode Island went to overtime with 10 Oklahoma, who many thought shouldn’t even be in the tournament. The Rams pulled it out 83-78. 9 Alabama only beat 8 Virginia Tech by 3, but it wasn’t as close at the end as the 86-83 score might indicate. 5 Kentucky was threatened by 12 Davidson for much of the second half, but pulled away at the end and won 78-73. 5 Ohio State also avoided the upset bug 81-73. Texas Tech fought off fellow Texas school 14 Stephen F. Austin 70-60.
All other games were won comfortably, including 1 Kansas’s win over 16 Penn, who some picked to be the first 16-seed to win in the first round. Kansas struggled early, but won easily 76-60.

That will teach me for not double checking what I clicked on...I was supposed to have Virginia beating Villanova in the final.... And that should teach me to at least look up the regular standings or form before picking I am the only one of the lot to go for N Carolina! Only consolation is, Elf seems to think the way I do too (same last 4)

A good round, and N-Bomb takes the le---…. What’s that? We have an update from the studio coming in here. A 16 SEED BEAT A 1 SEED FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER! That’s right, 16 seeds are now 1-135 all time as 16 UMBC (that’s Maryland-Baltimore County) completely dominated 1 Virginia in the second half after they were tied at halftime. Against the #1 defense in the country, the Retrievers scored 53 points in the second half alone, winning 74-54 in a game that wasn’t really even in question for the last 15 minutes of the game. Now, only 5 tippers have a team alive in the South region, and 5 tippers lost one of their final 2 teams, with 4 of those losing their champion.
We return from that break to say that N-Bomb has taken over the lead on a day where nobody really did well. N-Bomb survived the day, missing 5 picks. That effort was matched by srini701, who is 4 points off the lead. gtho4 dropped a spot to sit in third, separated from the off-podium spots by 7 points. To say that anyone is certainly in or out of the comp at this point might be foolish, when 16 seeds are winning games. themonarch has the max possible points remaining (MPP) with 282. In fact, only 5 tippers have a MPP above last year’s winning score of 254, so this may be a record-low year, for good reason.
The day started with an upset mindset, as 4 Wichita State faced 13 Marshall. The largest lead by either team was 7 points by Wichita State early in the second half, but Marshall kept fighting back and took the lead at 53-52, and they bounced back and forth for the lead until the last few minutes. Marshall finally broke away up 78-72 with 2 minutes left, and was able to hold on with an 81-75 victory.
To round out the bad round for 4 seeds, 4 Auburn played 13 Charleston to the end, but was able to fend off the Cougars 62-58. 10 Butler was able to pull off an upset of their own against 7 Arkansas, 79-62. 11 Syracuse, fresh off their win in the play-in, took down 6 TCU 57-52 as well. Both 9 seeds on the day, 9 Kansas State and 9 Florida State pulled off upsets rather easily.
7 Nevada avoided their own upset against 10 Texas, going to overtime and finally pulling out the win 87-83. 3 Michigan State may have beaten 14 Bucknell by only 4 points, but the outcome was never really in question as Bucknell hit a few late 3-pointers to make it closer than it actually was. 1 Xavier, 2 Cincinnati, 2 North Carolina, 2 Purdue, 5 West Virginia, and 5 Clemson all won fairly easily, but Purdue did lose one of their best players for the reset of the tournament. 7 Texas A&M won a close game against 10 Providence 73-69.

A quick recap as this will go up shortly before the last game finishes on Sunday. gtho4 takes a small lead over N-Bomb, who in turn has a small lead on Howie72 and srini701, who appear to be the main contenders at the moment, as fifth place is 13 points back (but who really knows in this tournament).
The only upset on Saturday was 11 Loyola (IL) continuing their Cinderella run by knocking off 3 Tennessee on a buzzer beater to win 63-62. That wasn’t a shock to the entire crowd, as 3 of our tippers took the Ramblers to go to the Sweet 16. Only 4 tippers had a live pick going into 5 Kentucky against 13 Buffalo, and they all took home points as the Wildcats easily won 95-75.
3 Michigan required a miracle to continue on in the tournament, and they got it by hitting a last second shot to take down 6 Houston 64-63. 3 Texas Tech also went down to the wire with 6 Florida, but pulled out the win 69-66. 4 Gonzaga looked to be cruising to a victory up 44-33 at halftime against 5 Ohio State, but the Buckeyes were able to take the lead with more than 10 minutes remaining in the second half. Under 4 minutes, the Bulldogs finally pulled away again and won 90-84. 1 Kansas won a close game but it was never really in doubt as they held off 8 Seton Hall, and 1 Villanova blew out 9 Alabama 81-58.
