The scoring system for the Kentucky Derby comp is the same as the Grand National comp earlier this month: SCORING RULES o The rules for this comp are simple, and are the same as last year and the year before. o Pick 10 horses in the order you think they'll finish, 1st to 10th. o Points: for any horse out of the 10 you've picked, which finishes in the first five places: 1st : 10 pts 2nd : 6 pts 3rd : 3 pts 4th : 2 pts 5th : 1 pt o The order of your picks will be used as a tiebreaker to separate any dead-heats or ties. o If two players have identical picks x10, whoever posts first wins the tie-breaker. DEADLINE The race starts on Saturday 5th May 2018 at 6:46pm. Tips close on the hour at 6:00pm with a short period of grace of a few minutes. There is a count-down clock to the race start time on this webpage, near the top LH corner : kentuckyderby.com. The following webpages (of many out there) have details of the contenders and their form: www.drf.com bloodhorse.com www.chiff.com horse-races.net horseracingnation.com downthestretchtheycome.com The field of 20 runners and their post positions (barrier draw) will be announced three days before the race at around 5:00pm ET on Wednesday 2nd May 2018. Picks x10 can be posted at any time in this thread, even if the field of 20 hasn't been announced! Please note that there is no need to pick reserves. If your horse is scratched, so be it (we've got half the field covered with our 10 picks). yoyoandcigs missed the deadline

the favourite claimed the roses for the 6th consecutive year .. but wwe84 and N-Bomb were the only ones who had Justify as their 1st pick.
nobody picked the first five across the line.
all of us had the winner in our picks except for ozzz2002 .. and nobody had the 50-1 outsider Instilled Regard in our picks, except for ozzz2002!
the winner became the first horse since 1882 to win the Derby without racing as a two-year old. The last time this happened was 136 years ago in 1882.
we needed a tie-breaker countback to determine the medals as we had a four-way tie for first.
Howie72 won gold as he picked the winner with his 3rd pick, Fifiona81 with her 4th for silver and gtho4 with his 6th for bronze.
last year's bronze medallist was Howie72, which makes it back-to-back podium finishes; in fact it's five back-to-back podiums 2014-2015-2016-2017-2018 with silver-silver-silver-bronze-gold finishes over the last five years!
the defending titleholder was George95.
this was the 16th running of the Kentucky Derby comp .. no-one has retained his or her title, and Howie72's win was his first.
only two have won this twice: buck5ley in 2005 and 2007, George95 in 2012 and 2017.
close but yet so far .. Fifiona81 came within a whisker of winning the first two legs of the FT Triple Crown! The first-leg Grand National podium was: Fiofiona81 gold, gtho4 silver and wwe84 bronze.
if Fifiona81 had won the countback she would've become the 5th person to win two legs, and only the 2nd person to go into the third leg (Melbourne Cup) with two wins and a chance to win the FT Triple Crown (the first was 22crows in 2014).
anyway, maybe it wasn't meant to be ... we will now have to wait until next year to see if anyone can lift the FT Triple Crown.

The track was a little wet .. in fact it suited mud-runners as it was drenched in 3 inches of rain (about 75mm).
