French Open 2018The red clay of Paris beckons all tennis lovers from Monday, 21 May. An unseeded Latvian, Jelena Ostapenko had a fairy tale finish last year but will be under pressure to defend her title this year. No such problems apparently for 10-time champion Rafael Nadal in the men's side  N-Bomb has won the women's section of our comp the last 2 years. - Simona Halep finally shed the tag of the eternal bridesmaid. After losing 3 finals over the last couple of years, she finally turned it around in style and in an interesting (if not the best) final, beat "surprise" finalist Sloane Stephens. Halep retains her world number 1 rank as well. And to think Howie72 was worried enough after Halep lost the first set in her first round to post here that we should probably lodge our picks a little later
- Stephens did not have any picks amongst us to make it to the final (or even the last 4). Clay was never her favourite surface, but she adapted well and make a deep run in a slam other than a hardcourt. Stephens did have her backers amongst us to make it to the last 8 though.
- Between us we picked all 8 of the quarterfinalists! A rare happening in our grand slam competitions, especially for women. And it turned out that the one-odd pick was the clincher. Yulia Putintseva was picked by 2 of us, and she helped one of us win the comp. The two Russians in last 8, Maria Sharapova and Daria Kasatkina had 2 backers each and they helped both of them land podium spots.
- Fifiona81 goes home with the gold medal for 2018, edging out last year's champion N-Bomb by a solitary point. N-Bomb himself edged out paper_aero on a tie-breaker for the silver medal! That's how close our 3 medallists were this year
 - Howie72 and LeoDaVinci actually picked Halep to win it all, but they didn't have much faith in the Russians, and so miss out. As did srini701, who picked Putintseva, but didn't trust the Russians....gtho4 and wwe84 were inseparable all through despite having different picks. Dizart ended up with a single digit score for the spoon....he will bounce back for sure...
- Congrats then to Fifiona81, N-Bomb, and paper_aero while we await the men's results...

- Was the men's competition ever in doubt once we knew Rafael Nadal was physically fit? 14 years, 11 titles. No person has won as many titles at a single slam. Heck, he has as many French Open titles as Bjorn Borg has in his entire career! 86 wins, 2 losses (one because of injury) and 1 withdrawal. Nadal is not a human being on clay. Playing him on clay is like living on Mars. It's theoretically possible, we just don't have the skills or know how yet
 - And yet, ozzz2002 thought it would be possible....poor guy...he'll know better in 2019 Well, the rest of us all had faith in the irresistible force on clay and so we all landed with a nice set of correct picks. The person making the difference to our standings here was the other finalist, Dominic Thiem. The French Open was always going to be a case of the other 127 men fighting for a place in the finals against Nadal (or 64 from the other half), and 3 of us picked Thiem to do it. Thiem rewarded all 3 of us with podium places here because of our faith in him.
- ElfTwinkle trusted Del Potro to make it to the last 8 and so she runs away with the gold. srini701 didn't have much faith in the big giant's clay court abilities, and settles for silver. 3 people tied for bronze medal and Fifiona81 takes it on a better tie-break. gtho4 should probably explain how he thought someone could possibly win 21 games against Nadal on clay
- LeoDaVinci and Dizart had a forgettable French Open, but will hopefully bounce back at the next Slam, which is just a month away. Hopefully the change of colour of the court to green will spur them on....till we meet at Wimbledon then....
