Hello hello! As you may remember, we had great discussions about the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, four years ago (wow!) in this forum. Now that the most important tournament in international association football is back, I figured it would be fun to do it again! I will be providing daily recaps with "Today's Games" (summaries of the day's matches), "Today's Refs" (opinions on the referees' performance, open for discussion), "Today's Facts" (a few fun facts and statistics relevant to the day's games, some of them courtesy of ESPN's MisterChip,) "What's Next" (featuring the matches of the next day and what the team's next match is) and "Today's Questions' (a few questions to open friendly discussion about the tournament.) I will also be providing, to the best of my ability, live coverage of the matches, posting when something important happens (kickoff, a goal, a red card, or another important event.) I'm well-aware that updates on the matches will be available pretty much anywhere, but I still think it's fun to bring live coverage to FunTrivia! I look forward to having friendly, respectful conversations (even when our opinions are different), just like we did last time! Feel free to start giving your candidates for World Champions. smile See you soon!

One thing for sure is Australia won't make through the Pool stage

Perhaps! Although Peru recently lost one of their best players due to a suspension, and I really don't see Denmark going past the group stage. But we'll see! It will certainly be an interesting group.

Great idea! I look forward to it!

I doubt I'm going to see quite as much of this World Cup though. Four years ago was the perfect storm of having my first baby about 2-3 months old so evenings involved a lot of me watching telly holding baby to give my better half some rest so I watched most of the matches.

I think it could be Argentina, they are unfancied a little because of their defensive line up but if Messi truly brings it then I think they could do it. The attacking line up is phenomenal.

It would obviously be no great shock if Germany or Spain were to manage it. People are saying Brazil... maybe, I don't see that personally.

Thank you! Your comments were very important for the discussion last time, so I hope you will be visiting often! For me, Spain is the main candidate. Certainly Germany can't be ruled out. I highly doubt Argentina will win, that poor team just can't figure it out. Who knows.

Most of the matches are played at a pretty reasonable schedule for me. There's just one on the second day that starts at 5am. Oh well, it only happens every four years!

Maybe Italy will win it! grin

I know, I know they haven't qualified... but no team has ever won a major championship when they didn't qualify have they?

Oh wait a minute! Denmark won Euro 92 having failed to qualify!

I'll keep an eye open for the Snipers in the crowd as when most of them get a slight touch or not in some cases they go down like they have been shot.

What do you all think about Harry Kane? I was unfamiliar with him until recently, and now Iím looking forward to seeing how he performs in the WC.

He'll definitely be one to watch! Though I doubt he'll make it very far in terms of goal-scoring. I have high hopes for Mexico's Hirving Lozano.

Two important news items for today, just 1 day before the World Cup starts!

1. The United States, Mexico, and Canada have been named the hosts of the 2026 World Cup, with most of the matches played in the United States. They defeated Morocco's bid.

2. In a shocking announcement, the Spain FA has fired coach Julen Lopetegui the day before the World Cup, after it was announced that he signed with Real Madrid to be their coach after the World Cup... even though he had just renewed his contract until 2020 with Spain! Fernando Hierro will take over the squad. Will this have an effect in Spain's performance?

I didnít think the ref called much. He seemed to let a lot of fouls slide.

Today's Games
Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia
Welcome to the 2018 World Cup! It's been a long, 4-year wait but it is finally here. I'm very excited for the tournament! Today was a good day for the hosts, Russia, who defeated Saudi Arabia 5-0 after a good opening ceremony featuring Robbie Williams, Aida Garifullina, Ronaldo Nazario, President Vladimir Putin, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. I think it was expected that Russia beat Saudi Arabia, a team that with all due respect has very little chances of competing for something past the group stage. Five goals, however, completely unexpected! I'm glad it happened that way though, a nice way to start the World Cup. It's always good for the hosts to do well. Good game by Russia, but the real test will be against Uruguay and Egypt. Pleasant surprise from Cheryshev, who became the man of the match after coming in as a substitute for an injured Dzagoev. Not a very exciting game, but plenty of goals to keep us entertained!

Today's Refs
Today's official was Nestor Pitana from Argentina, assisted by linesmen Hernan Maidana and Juan Pablo Belatti. Brazilian Sandro Ricci, who we will surely see as the main referee soon, was the fourth official. Massimiliano Irrati from Italy led the Video Assisted Referee (VAR) team, which was not used today. Overall, I think Pitana did a good job in quite an easy game for him to officiate. There were plenty of fouls, some of which he called and some of which he didn't, but overall he kept the match relatively under control. We will definitely see more from him. There was one play where many were asking if the VAR should've been used, since one of the linesmen did not notice an offside. However, the play had no future anyway, and it would be wasteful to use the VAR for every single confusing play. We'll see how that turns out as the tournament develops. There were only two yellow cards, shown late in the game, which is consistent with FIFA's "unwritten" policy to give out as little cards as possible in World Cups. Good job overall, in my opinion.

Today's Facts
- Gazinsky became the third player in history to score the first goal of the World Cup with a header, preceded by Lacombe (France, 1978) and Omam-Biyick (Cameroon, 1990).

- Dzagoev's substitution by Cheryshev was the earliest substitution in an opening game in all World Cup history. Cheryshev also became the first substitute to score in a World Cup opening match.

- It is the first time in 84 years, since Italy 1934, that the first half of the opening game ended with a team leading by two or more goals.

What's Next
Friday June 15: Egypt vs Uruguay, 6am FST
REFEREE: Bjorn Kuipers (NED)

Friday June 15: Morocco vs Iran, 9am FST
REFEREE: Cuneyt Cakir (TUR)

Friday June 15: Portugal vs Spain, 12pm FST
REFEREE: Gianluca Rocchi (ITA)

Tuesday June 19: Russia vs Egypt, 12pm FST

Wednesday June 20: Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia, 9am FST

Today's Questions
- Was this the best performance we will see from Russia? Did it exceed your expectations? Will they be able to keep this level in their next games?

- Who will make it through in Group A?

- Portugal-Spain will be perhaps one of the best matches of the entire group stage. Who do you think will win?

What do you think? Thank you and see you tomorrow!

I agree! As I said in the recap, it is consistent with FIFA's position to keep cards to a minimum and letting the game flow more. Not sure if that's good or bad.
