Vinnie Paul Abbott of legendary 80s and 90s Texas metal band Pantera is dead at 54, dying of an apparent massive heart attack while asleep in his home in Las Vegas.

Pantera was known for such hits as Cowboys From Hell, Cemetery Gates, and Walk. They toured with bands such as Metallica, Slayer, and Sepultura among many others.

On December 8, 2004, Vinnie Paul as he was known to fans and friends narrowly escaped being shot to death onstage, while performing with his band Damage Plan, by a deranged fan angry over the breakup of Pantera. His brother, Dimebag Darrell was shot in the head and was killed instantly. That may have been the darkest days in metal history. Dimebag Darrell's influence on metal cannot be underestimated. And now, the other Abbott brother is gone. RIP Vinnie Paul.
