A-League
2018-19
Tipping Competition

A-League football (soccer) is back for another year so get your names down and your dartboards out for another lucky dip.
The rules as the same as last year:
  • Threads will close prior to the start of the first game.
  • A bonus point will be awarded for a perfect score.
  • Bonus points will also be awarded for anyone that tips a result solo.
  • Ties at the end of the season will be broken in the following order:
    1) HoF/Spoon differential
    2) Most Hall of Fame awards
  • Picks of all home games - not eligible for any bonus points.
  • Default will be equal to the lowest score each round.
  • Late starters will be given a score equivalent to the last-placed active tipster.
The first round starts on Friday 19th October. The weekly fixture lists have been posted. Most rounds will kick off on Friday evening local time and threads will close at kick-off in that first game (there are a couple of rounds which start on a Thursday).

This year's comp will be the 14th A-League season. Last year N-Bomb won again for a the first three-peat in this comp. He's also the only payer to win this comp more than once (three straight plus one five years ago .. aka four of the last five comps! Will this season be a four-peat? All will be revealed over the coming months.

  • Welcome to the 2018-19 tipping competition of torture, aka the A-League soccer competition. This year we have 11 runners: we welcome back 11 of 13 from last season with no new victims. FussBudget and illiniman14 are no-shows while N-Bomb tries to continue his dominance and make it 4 titles in a row. Can anyone stop him? All shall be answered at some stage in the future.
  • The season started in Adelaide where the hosts welcomed Sydney, a team they had not scored against in the last 6 matches though Adelaide were unbeaten in their last 6 season openers. Adelaide took the lead at the end of the first half and had the better of the game but it finished all square after a 78th minute equaliser. It was the first Melbourne derby of the season with Victory hosting City and it also had the first Video Assistant Referee controversy (no doubt of many), Victory took the lead only to concede a very soft free kick just outside the penalty area late in the first half. The VAR intervened and the referee checked, it looked suspiciously like a dive with very little contact, if any, but the referee overturned the free kick and made it a penalty and it was all square at the break. The second half saw City score with a sublime movement and take away the 3 points. For just the second time in their history Wellington opened the season with a win, overcoming last season's beaten finalist Newcastle. A first half Jets own goal and a late rebound strike from Roy Krishna after his penalty had been saved was enough despite a last minute lifline from Newcastle. Once again the VAR interventions were controversial, the Phoenix denied due to a dodgy handball decision but benefitted from a penalty decision. After squandering a number of chances, Adam Taggart finally put one away to rescue a point for Brisbane against Central Coast after the visiting Mariners had taken an early lead. Perth dominated the first half and took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break but Western Sydney came out firing in the second half to earn a share of the spoils, the third 1-1 draw of the round.
  • It should be of no surprise to anyone with the start we had to the tipping season as we went just 11/55 for a strike rate of 20.00%. The "easiest" game to tip was Perth's home draw against Western Sydney but even then we had just 5 getting this correct. The two trickiest games saw solo correct tips and both by ozzz2002, he could make a fortune selling his crystal ball. The games were Melbourne City's win in the Melbourne derby and Brisbane's home draw with Central Coast. As a result he also picks up the first 2 bonus points of the season.
  • There were 4 weekly winners in the first round with ozzz2002, wwe84, Howie72 and ElfTwinkle all going 2/5. There were also 4 recipients of the wooden spoon with Sypher, srini701, gtho4 and N-Bomb all going 0/5, not a good start for N-Bomb's attempt for 4 titles in a row but still a long way to go. The good news is these 4 can do no worse in any future round.
  • With his 2 bonus points, ozzz2002 opens up a 2 point lead over the other 3 weekly winners while there is a 4-way tie at the bottom.

  • paper_aero was running on default fuel this week.
  • All of the statistics suggested Adelaide's home game against Newcastle was an even encounter and that included the scoreline as both teams scored in the second half to cancel each other out. Melbourne City dominated possesion away at Central Coast but it took a scrappy goal 6 minutes from time to cancel out the Mariner's half-time lead. Two early Sydney goals proved to be enough to win the Sydney derby over Western Sydney but it was not without more video assistant referee controversy. Western Sydney thought they had pulled a goal back on the hour mark but the VAR intervened and the goal was wiped out due to an alleged foul in the build-up - the Wanderers manager was outraged and subsequently got red carded and sent to the stands. Sydney have now only lost 1 of the last 14 derbies in the A-League. Brisbane and Wellington showed plenty of attacking enterprise in Brisbane but neither side had the clinical edge in the penalty area as they fought out a goalless stalemate, the best chance fell to former Newcastle United (from the premier division in England) defender, Steven Taylor, who somehow hit the post from close range with the goal gaping. This could end up being the miss of the season. Two first half defensive errors saw Melbourne Victory 2-0 down at home to Perth before thy fought back to equalise in the 87th minute. The drama did not end their as Perth scored the winner in stoppage time in a game where they had just 32% possession.
  • The best I can say about week 2 is that we statistically went better than week 1 as we went 15/50 for a strike rate of 30.00%. This was helped considerably by 9 correct tips for Sydney's win over Western Sydney, only wwe84 failed to get this right as he picked a draw. No one thought Perth had a chance of beating Melbourne Victory away. Anbother 2 solo tip bonus points were handed out, going to LeoDaVinci for picking the draw between Adelaide and Newcastle, and wwe84 for also picking a draw between Central Coast and Melbourne City.
  • Out of 10 sets of tips this week we had 5 weekly winners with 2/5 and 5 wooden spoons with 1/5. The good news is everone is under way but with 6 draws out of 10 games so far this season will N-Bomb decide to pick a draw in week 3?
  • The gap at the top has narrowed to 1 point, ozzz2002 still enjoys the lead but there are 4 snapping at his heels. At the bottom srini701 pulls away, leaving Sypher, gtho4 and N-Bomb bringing up the rear. The bad news for these three is that ozzz2002 has more bonus pints than they have total points after 2 rounds.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Sydney travelled to Melbourne City to play their 3rd game in 6 days after losing the FFA Cup final to Adelaide mid-week but it did not show as they ran away comprehensive winners, strong in defense and too clinical in attack for City. In Wellington there was what the locals call a breeze but most others around the A-League would call a strong wind though it did not help the home team as the Phoenix were outplayed by Western Sydney. It was last year's Grand Final rematch as Newcastle hosted Melbourne Victory, the home team applied all of the pressure early and were unlucky not to go ahead but Victory gradually got into the fixture and a superb second half strike saw them earn their first win of the season. Perth went 2-0 up just after the hour mark but had to survive a late scare when conceding an 84th minute penalty and a sending off but held on for the win. The first 2 rounds had 3 draws in each round but this round there were three 3-0 away wins as Adelaide celebrated their FFA Cup victory in style, comfortably beating Central Coast for their first league win of the season.
  • In A-League standards we had a good week as we went 27/55 for a strike rate of 49.09% though still got more wrong than right. The easiest game to tip was Perth's home win over Brisbane which 9 of us got correct. The trickiest game was Western Sydney's win at Wellington. LeoDaVinci and N-Bomb being the beneficiaries. There were no draws this week but 4 away wins, only 20% of home teams have won in the first 3 rounds.
  • Sypher and LeoDaVinci were the weekly winners this round as they went an imporessive 4/5. On the other hand gtho4 makes it a hat-trick of spoons to start the season and is joined by wwe84 and ElfTwinkle in going 1/5.
  • LeoDaVinci has joined ozzz2002 at the top of the standings and these two have a 2 point gap over George95 and Howie72. Not surprisingly after 3 spoons in a row, gtho4 finds himself alone at the bottom and adrift by 2 points.

  • We had a full house this week. LeoDaVinci tipped twice and thankfully both were sets were identical. However I can only allow one lot of points rather than doubling them. smilee
  • Melbourne City had lost 7 of their previous 9 Friday night games but were in no danger this time as they cruised past a Wellington Phoenix side that were once again disappointing in attack, a penalty chance to get back into the game was ruled out by the VAR in a manner inconsistent with other interventions. Maybe the one highlight for the Phoenix was Thomas Doyle rescuing a seagull that had been hit by one of his passes and left lying on the field, he picked it up and moved it to the sideline to recover. Brisbane were all at sea early as home team Western Sydney took a 2-0 lead within the first 18 minutes but they recovered to earn a share of the points with a long range strike and a second half penalty. Sydney were left ruing their inability to score a second goal away at Newcastle as the home team equalised nearing stoppage time at the end of the game to take a share of the spoils. Perth surprisingly went top of the standings with an impressive win at Adelaide, despite the lion's share of the ball Adelaide rarely threatened the Perth goal with only one shot on target. It was all over by halftime as Melbourne Victory turned on the style to lead 3-0 over Central Coast, they eased up in the second half and the Mariners scored a consolation goal but still went down 4-1.
  • It was a decent A-League week as we went 24/55 for a strike rate of 43.63%, we are still awaiting the first round where we get more right than wrong. There were no perfect games but we got close with the 2 Melbourne wins which had only 1 incorrect tip for each game. No one thought Newcastle would draw at home to Sydney, we all had Sydney to win other than wwe84 who picked Newcastle. George95 picked up the 5th bonus point of the season when he tipped Perth to win at Adelaide. There were another 2 draws making it 8 in the first 4 rounds.
  • There were 3 weekly winners as ozzz2002, George95 and ElfTwinkle all went 3/5. Breathing a sight of relief was gtho4 who avoided a 4th spoon to start the season when wwe84 went 1/4, wwe84 putting more faith in Central Coast in the last game than everyone else did.
  • ozzz2002 has pulled ahead by a point at the top while George95 joins LeoDaVinci in second while Howie72 falls off the podium. At the bottom gtho4 remains 2 points adrift of wwe84, paper_aero and N-Bomb.

  • There were chances at both ends in the Western Sydney vs Newcastle match but it was the Jets that managed to take two of them while riding their luck defensively for their first win of the season, the Wanderers left ruing several golden opportunities to score. Wellington scored early against Adelaide and were looking good for a lead at the break until an unfortunate own goal evened it up on the stroke of half-time, Adelaide scored within 2 minutes of the restart and never looked threatened after that, adding a third to make the win secure. Adam Taggart scored in each half for Brisbane to take his season tally to 5 in 5 matches as Brisbane defeated Melbourne City for their first win if the season. Melbourne Victory's star recruits were the difference as they inflicted a rare home loss on Sydney, a 71st minute penalty proving to be the difference. Centeral Coast had twice come from behind in Perth to draw level against the league leaders but a composed finish in the 5th minute of stoppage time won it for the Glory just after Central Coast had a player sent off.
  • It was an okay round by A-League standards as we went 16/49 for a strike rate of 32.65% though we are still awaiting the first round where we get more right than wrong. There was one perfect game as we all tipped Perth to beat Central Coast but it could have been a disastrous round if the Glory had not won it right at the end. We had 3 matches out of 5 that no one managed to get a tip correct, the Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne Victory wins.
  • We had 6 weekly winners out of 10 participants this round with them going 2/5. The remaining 4 of us earned a spoon with 1/5.
  • With ozzz2002 going default it gave a chance for LeoDaVinci and paper_aero to pull level at the top, it could have been much worse for ozzz2002 but it turned out to be a good week to go default. These 3 are 2 points ahead of ElfTwinkle despite her having 4 weekly wins in 5 rounds. At the bottom gtho4 remains 2 points adrift of just wwe84 now, these 2 now have 4 spoons in 5 rounds with wwe84 making it 4 in a row.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • It was a thriller in Adelaide as the home team beat Brisbane thanks to two goals from Ben Halloran, a former Brisbane player. The woodwork was struck 3 times plus a player from each side saw red near the end of the game. Central Coast looked like taking a deserved half-time lead at home to Sydney but a late penalty evened it up at the break before a stunning strike in the second half saw Sydney take a come-from-behind win, the Mariners still have not tasted victory this season. Melbourne Victory were dominant in their big win over Western Sydney even with taking their foot off the pedal in the second 45 minutes as by half-time the Victory were leading 3-0. Wellington took on Perth and took a thoroughly deserved 1-0 lead into the break, the Glory improved in the second half but it took a horrendous VAR intervention, which was compounded by the referee when he sent a Phoenix player off, for the game to be turned around. Perth equalised but no one could score a winner, for once it was admitted the sending off was an error but that does not help the Phoenix. Roy Krishna scored his 34th goal for the Phoenix to become their all time top scorer. It was a bonanza round for the Melbourne sides as Melbourne City also won well at home over Newcastle, taking the combined Melbourne scores to 7-0.
  • Good news as we finally got more right than wrong when we went 38/55 for a 69.09% strike rate. It was helped considerably by two perfect games, being the Sydney and Melbourne Victory wins. The trickiest game to tip was Wellington's draw at home to Perth which only wwe84 and LeoDaVinci saw success.
  • There was just one weekly winner and LeoDaVinci did it in style by going perfect with 5/5 and picking up his second bonus point. George95 and ElTwinkle took home spoons with 2/5 and if it is any consolation, it is the biggest spoon score of the season so far. ElfTwinkle keeps up her streak of either a weekly win or a spoon in each round this season.
  • With George95's first spoon it leaves only LeoDaVinci and paper_aero without a spoon while gtho4 is the only one without a weekly win.
  • With his perfect round and bonus point LeoDaVinci breaks away from last round's three-way tie at the top and opens up the biggest lead of the season at 3 points. ozzz2002 drops to second, the first time he has not been on top of the podium while George is third, a point behind ozzz2002. At the bottom gtho4 is now 3 points adrift of wwe84 despite increasing his total points for the season by 60%.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Central Coast continued their winless start to the season when they travelled to Western Sydney, they competed well early but Wanderers gained a lot of confidence when scoring in first half stoppage time and this continued in the second half to shut the Mariners out. The shock of the round happened in Sydney where the reigning premiers went down at home to a Wellington Phoenix side who in most seasons have trouble even drawing away, the Phoenix were 3-0 up by the break and it was only a late consolation goal after a penalty area scramble that prevented a clean sheet. Melbourne Victory went temporarily top of the table after beating Adelaide to make it 5 wins in a row despite Adelaide registering 16 shots on goal to Victory's 8. Melbourne City were left to rue missing a 21st minute sitter at Perth where any shot on target would have given them the lead, as the home side took full advantage with the only goal of the game just before half-time. Melbourne City never had a shot on target during the entire game and Perth go back ahead of Melbourne Victory at the top. Newcastle celebrated their 350th A-League match with a win over visiting Brisbane, their fist half goal ended a run of 6 home games where they failed to scored in the first 45 minutes while Brisbane has now conceded twice in each of their last 8 away games.
  • We dropped back below the 'more right than wrong' mark this round as we went 25/55 for a 45.45% strike rate. The two easiest games to tip were the Perth and Newcastle wins but even then only 7 of us got these right. Not surprisingly, no one gave the Phoenix a chance of upsetting Sydney in Sydney.
  • There were 4 home wins and no draws this week and paper_aero, gtho4 and N-Bomb all tipped home winners, as a result they went 4/5 for the weekly win. We gave away 4 spoons this week as wwe84, srini701, Sypher and ELfTwinkle all went 1/5, this being wwe84's 5th sppon in the first 7 rounds.
  • We still have LeoDaVinci and paper_aero without a spoon this season while gtho4 fills in the hall of fame column with his first weekly win.
  • LeoDaVinci increases his lead at the top to a new season high of 4 points ahead of ozzz2002 while paper_aero and N-Bomb join George95 in third place, just a point futher back. At the bottom gtho4 has caught up with wwe84.

  • We had a full house this week though ElfTwinkle missed the Brisbane vs Melbourne City match due to late tips.
  • The round started in Brisbane with Cyclone Owen hanging around nearby and the first half against Melbourne Victory had everything apart from the rain. By the break the floodgates had opened with Melbourne opening up a 4-2 lead while the home team had a player sent off in the 21st minute, the second half was more of a stalemate as by then the Victory knew the win was theirs to make it 6 wins in a row. Wellington had a comfortable win over Central Coast, the first time the Phoenix has had back-to-back wins since April 2017 while the Mariners have now had their worst start to a season with just 2 draws in their first 8 games. Sydney came from behind to record a win over 10-man Western Sydney, the game turned when the Wanderer's goal keeper was sent off for hand-ball outside the penalty area. Sydney have now lost just one of the last 15 Sydney derbies. Despite conceding most of the play, Perth won at Newcastle to retain the lead at the top of the standings for another week, Perth had just 4 shots at goal and scored twice while Newcastle were wasteful in not finding the back of the net with 22 shots at goal, the vast majority not even on target. Adelaide squandered good goal scoring chances early before an own goal handed Melbourne City the lead against the run of play, after this City gained control and doubled the lead just after half-time and cruised to the finish to remain unbeaten aganst the Reds in the last 5 games.
  • We had another very good round by A-League standards as we went 29/54 for a 53.70% strike rate. The two easiest games to tip were the Melbourne Victory and Wellington wins which saw 8 correct tips for each game. The trickiest games to tip still had 3 of us right for each of the Perth and Melbourne City wins.
  • It was a mirror image to last week as this time there were 4 away wins and 1 home win with the Phoenix being involved in the odd one out in both weeks. With so many away wins we had just one weekly winner as srini701 managed a superb 4/5. There was also just one spoon awarded and it went to Sypher with 1/5.
  • LeoDaVinci and paper_aero are still without a spoon this season so eating their soup with a fork must be a little difficult.
  • There were no changes at the top as the first 5 all went 3/5 so it leaves LeoDaVinci with a 4 point lead over ozzz2002. Big news at the bottom as for the first time this season gtho4 is not hanging on to the bottom rung of the ladder. He has caught up with ElfTwinkle and these two enjoy a 1 point buffer over wwe84 and Sypher.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Sydney showed they will not give up their championship without a fight as they travelled west and inflicted the first loss for the season on Perth. Wellington finished strongly to score 3 times in the last 15 minutes to secure a crucial win over Brisbane. The latest edition of the Melbourne derby did not disappoint as Victory's 6 match winning streak came to an end with a City equaliser in the 92nd minute. Central Coast lead Newcastle at half-time but could not hold on as the Jets scored twice after the break, the Mariners have not tasted victory this season and going back to last season are on a 15 game winless streak. It finished all square in the heat of Adelaide as Western Sydney took quick advantage of the hosts going down to 10 men on the hour mark with an immediate equaliser but could not push on for the win.
  • It was a reasonable round by A-League standards as we went 23/55 for a 41.81% strike rate. The easiest game to tip was Newcastle's win at Central Coast which had 8 correct tips. The trickiest game to tip was the draw in the Melbourne derby where only wwe84 managed to get this right and he earned himself a much needed bonus point as well.
  • Not only did he get a bonus point but wwe84 was also the solo weekly winner with 4/5, only missing Sydney's win at Perth. Three spoons were awarded as Sypher, N-Bomb and George95 all went 1/5, this being a hattrick of spoons for Sypher.
  • LeoDaVinci and paper_aero are still without a spoon but surely it is only a matter of time?.
  • LeoDaVinci sees ozzz2002 decrease his lead to 3 points while paper_aero breaks clear of the tie for third to take over this spot by himself, a further 2 points behind ozzz2002. With his hattrick of spoons, Sypher takes over the bottom by himself and is now 2 points behind gtho4. The big mover is wwe84 who moves from a tie for last to a tie for 6th.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • Wellington Phoenix continue to surprise this season, this time they held Melbourne Victory to a draw in Melbourne after the hosts rescued a point in the 77th minute of a thrilling game. Sydney had struggled at home this season, earning only 3 points before doubling that by just outlasting Brisbane. The Roar had sacked their manager and showed the spirit needed and could have had earned a draw but for the Sydney goalkeeper saving a late penalty. It looked like Newcastle's match at home to Adelaide would finish in a stalemate after they equalised in the 75th minute but there was a twist as Adelaide earned a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time and made no mistake with the spot kick to steal the game. It was much easier for Perth as they demolished Central Coast to end 2018 as league leaders, the Mariners have now lost 8 in a row. Two goals late in the first half from Melbourne City stunned Western Sydney and despite City having a player sent off in the 57th minute the Wanderers could not hit back. When they could create chances the City goalkeeper was unbeatable.
  • It was a good round by A-League standards as we went 28/55 for a 50.90% strike rate. It was helped by 2 perfect games as we all tipped Sydney and Perth to win but no one thought Wellington would take a point from their draw at Melbourne Victory.
  • Another solo weekly winner and this timne it is ozzz2002 who went 4/5. For just the second time in 10 rounds the spoon score was as high as 2/5 much to the frustration of 6 of us.
  • The time has come for LeoDaVinci as he picks up his first spoon of the season, leaving just paper_aero without one.
  • LeoDaVinci has seen his lead over ozzz2002 decrease to just 1 point with paper_aero another 3 points back. At the bottom, Sypher remains 2 points behind while gtho4 catches back up with ElfTwinkle but it is close between the bottom 6.

  • We had a full house this week.
  • The first game was brought forward and Newcastle were left ruing their wastefulness as Brisbane twice came from behind to draw level with their hosts, the Jets registering 26 shots at goal for just 2 goals while the Roar avoided a club-record 6th defeat in a row. Western Sydney were awarded a firsat half penalty only to have it erased by the VAR and Wellington took advantage to socre first only for Wanderers to cancel it out just before the break and it stayed like this until the 82nd minute when it went crazy with 3 more goals, the Phoenix scoring 2 of them to take the win for a club-record equalling 7 game unbeaten run. Adelaide had not scored a goal in the opening 30 minutes of their last 7 home games but this was to change against Melbourne Victory as goals in the 18th and 21st minutes were enough to earn them a crucial win and end the Victory's unbeaten streak at 9 games. Perth took advantage of Melbourne Victory's loss by beating Sydney at home to move 6 points clear at the top of the table. It finally happened, Central Coast snapped their winless streak with an 89th minute rebound goal after a penalty miss gave them their first win of the season and ended the winless streak at 16 games.
  • The less said about this round the better though it gives dg_dave another round to add to the 'worst tipping rounds ever' as we went just 7/55 for a 12.72% strike rate. I am not sure what the lowest success rate ever is but hopefully dg_dave can tell us. The "easiest" game to tip was Wellingtons win at Western Sydney which saw only 4 correct tips. No one thought Newcastle and Brisbane would draw or that Central Coast would beat Melbourne City. Sypher earns his first bonus point of the season for being the only one to tip Adelaide's win over Melbourne Victory.
  • We either earned ourselves a weekly win or a wooden spoon. The weekly win went to 7 of us with a meager 1/5 while the other 4 of us eaned a spoon each with 0/5.
  • It has happened, paper_aero became the last of us to pick up a wooden spoon this season and he did it in style with 0/5.
  • The top 3 all went 0/5 so LeoDaVinci maintains his 1 point lead over ozzz2002, however paper_aero is joined in 3rd place by George95 and these 2 are 3 points further back. At the bottom, Sypher and his bonus point draws level with ElfTwinkle, a point behind gtho4.

... and the three leaders all collected a wooden spoon. This has to be a record as well (I don't think this has ever happened before).

Yeah, I used to use a soccer ball to pick the darts comp winners, now I just do it in reverse.

And a fat lot of good it does me... smile
