US Open 2018

The final Grand Slam of the year begins Monday, 27 August. Sloane Stephens and Rafael Nadal will try and defend their titles on the court and srini701 and ozz2002 will try and do the same here.

The men's field looks very competitive with the big 4 all back, and some notable young players making their mark too. The women's section looks wide open as ever. In short, should make for an intriguing 2 weeks of tennis.

This will be the last Grand Slam to have 32 seeds that will revert to 16 seeding format from 2019.

  • Naomi Osaka becomes the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title (second from Asia after Na Li at the French in 2011....thanks gtho4 smile ). She was dominant in her run right from the quarterfinals, not dropping a set and with a very aggressive game and hard-hitting forehand and serve. And yet, her maiden win may forever be overshadowed by the controversy between her final opponent Serena Williams and the chair umpire....sad. I will not get into the details here or take sides, but what happened was bad and could easily have been avoided. Serena was totally outplayed by an unawed Naomi, and we may have seen the first of many titles to come for the young champion.
  • 10 of us lodged picks (LeoDaVinci and toocool4u missing from the Wimbledon lineup, and ElfTwinkle missing a second slam in a row now), yet not one of us picked Naomi to make it even till the last 8 (she was the same quarter as Kvitova, Kasatkina, Wozniacki). 7 of us had faith in Serena making it to finals or winning it (Dizart, wwe84 and ozzz2002 exceptions), but it turned out to be Madison Keys as the semifinalist who made the difference in our standings.
  • Howie72 and George95 both tied for the top spot and Howie72 edged it by a single game in the tie-break!
  • srini701 takes the bronze, riding on his pick of Anastasija Sevastova. Sevastavoa incidentally was the sole points for our spooner Dizart too.
  • It promises to be lot more closer and better scoring in the men's section. Let's see.....Congrats for now to Howie72, George95 and srini701 for making it to the podium smile

  • The Djoker is BACK! If Wimbledon was the starting point, the US Open has only reaffirmed it. Novak Djokovic won his 14th Grand Slam singles title, tying with Pete Sampras and now behind only the 2 "You-know-who"s on the all-time list. Djokovic's path to the finals was smoothed after a certain Roger Federer was shocked in round 4 by an unknown Aussie, John Millman. The 20-minute, 22-point game in the second set was probably the turning point of the finals against Del Potro and Djokovic went on to stamp his class over Del Potro in 3 straight sets....Del Potro still awaits a second slam after his win at the US Open in 2009...
  • The men's matches were far more competitive and closer from the quarterfinals than the women's. Nadal was stretched all the way by Thiem, Nishikori and Cilic went 5 sets too, while Del Potro won in 4 sets over Isner.
  • Fifiona81 picked 7 of the 8 quarterfinalists (missing only Millman) and for that feat alone, she deserved to win our comp! Well done for picking all Thiem, Nishikori and Isner together in a super-competitive field!
  • Dizart bounced back from a spoon in the women's field to take the silver here, ahead of paper_aero. For the first time this year, we had 6 different medal winners in a slam, after N-Bomb or Fifiona managed to find their way to both sections in one or the other of the 3 previous slams.
  • That's it for 2018 then...hoping to get a larget field when we assemble for the Australian Open in January 2019...
