World Cricket - 2018-19: November 6, 2018 to March 20, 2019

This will be the 15th edition of World Cricket here at FT ...

Nobody has ever retained their title in the 14 years this comp has been run frown .... And we have had the same podium for two years in a row now ... srini701 starts as the defending champion, paper_aero and N-Bomb were also on the last 2 podiums.

Other than West Indies and Zimbabwe, We will see all other major Test-playing countries in action this season. 17 rounds in all this season, with 4 rounds of ODIs and the rest being Test matches. 3 Test matches starting on Boxing Day will be our biggest round.

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 (or more) for ODI series from the list of players I will provide and score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about. The "super-sub" rule will continue to allow you to score for any player who you may pick but doesn't play...

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and as always there will be some rounds with 2 Tests in them.

9 people each played the last 3 seasons. It was 10 last year, before illiniman14 dropped off for the last few rounds. Hoping to see people sustain their interest in the "most challenging" tipping competition here at FunTrivia wink

  • A warm welcome to the 9 courageous and brave "fans" of the "most difficult tipping comp on FT" (yes, I have decided to award my comp this title myself, over the A-League and any other toughie out there grin ) ... illiniman14 is missing from last year's lineup but we seem to have attracted a newbie, Daaanieeel, who lodged picks for round 2....hoping he will last the course...

  • England turned around their away Test form in some style to ruin the farewell test of Rangana Herath. There were some superb all round performances, and debutant wicket keeper Ben Foakes added a happy headache to England's growing riches in the all-rounder category....will he play once regular wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow returns? A 3rd keeper, Jos Buttler, is already playing as a specialist batsman!

  • Sri Lanka will have some real large shoes to fill from the very 2nd Test, with Herath's departure. Dilruwan Perera had a very good Test, and he seems set to be the team's leading spinner, at least for now.

  • Howie72 got off the blocks with a bang, with Perera alone netting him more points than the total points managed by our first spooner, gtho4! N-Bomb, ElfTwinkle and LeoDaVinci all are off to a good start too....srini and wwe84 are trying to give company to gtho4 for now....long season ahead, folks wink

Supersubs scoring this round: Rory Burns for gtho4 in place of Lahiru Kumara, as Sri Lanka went with just one medium pacer.

The next 2 rounds include the same teams. If you do not lodge picks, your first test team continues to score....your call now...

  • Daaanieeel marks his debut in our comp in style, picking a brilliant team that almost gets him a HoF. That N-Bomb pipped him to this is only incidental. Here's looking to an interesting season ahead and to seeing our newcomer give the old guns a run for their money smile

  • It was a good round for most, except srini701 and wwe84, both of whose trump players flopped miserably. England got the better of Sri Lanka for the second round in a row, with the English spinners adapting better and with their captain Root leading from the front with the bat. It's the first away series win for England since 2015.

Supersubs scoring this round: Kusal Mendis for LeoDaVinci in place of Jonny Bairstow, but he may as well not have bothered...

The next round from Friday November 23 has 2 Tests...we skipped the first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan and are picking the second. Please make sure you come in and pick players for that Test, if you do not want to change your team for the England-Sri Lanka 3rd Test. The 4th round will see the start of the season down under...

Some interesting stats about thie Test I just read up (courtesy ESPNcricinfo):

2000-01: The last time England won a Test series in Sri Lanka.

2012-13: The last time before this tour in which England had won two successive away Tests. Their last away win before this series had come against Bangladesh at Chittagong, after which they had lost ten matches out of the 13 that they played outside England.

Thirty-eight wickets fell to spin in the Pallekele Test, the most ever in Test history

0 Wickets taken by England pacers in this match. This is only the third time that England have won a Test match when their quick bowlers have not taken a single wicket. The last such instance had come in the 1956 Ashes Test at Old Trafford

38 Number of wickets taken by spinners in this Test - the most in a Test match ever.

  • England managed a very rare away series whitewash (their first such away win since 1963!) "upsetting" the home team Sri Lanka, who were actually 'favourites' when the series started...this was just Sri Lanka's 3rd white wash at home in all Tests. The last 2 Tests were probably closer than the final results show, but England's spinners did an admirable job throughout (Moeen Ali now has the joint-most 4th innings wickets in Tests won for England in their history!). Ben Stokes was very silently the difference between the 2 sides (see his points this Test....none of us picked him grin )

  • After New Zealand won the first Test in a rather dramatic fashion (by 4 runs), Pakistan was seething with revenge, but no one probably expected their spinner Yasir Shah to have such a monster of a Test (well, I certainly didn't frown )....He picked up 14 wickets, including 10 in a day, as Pakistan thrashed New Zealand by an innings. Plenty of other unwanted records fell too (6 batsmen out for ducks in New Zealand's first innings as they collapsed from 50/0 to 90 all out).

  • Howie72 was laughing all the way after picking Yasir Shah as his "double/Trump" as he stretches his lead out front....N-Bomb is keeping pace with him. wwe84 was the 3rd player to have Yasir Shah as his trump, and he's thankful for that after Yasir scored more than 50% of wwe84's points this round. At the other end, srini701 picked Mohammad Abbas as his trump and got a whole lot of a big, fat 0 for that (570 points for Yasir - 0 for Abbas...do the maths mad ) ....but faring better than srini was ozzz2002, who managed to jinx every player he picked this round....or is it the other way around confused

  • gtho4 could have score some more points, but he forgot to pick a trump player for the New Zealand Test. ElfTwinkle lodged her picks a day late (but before the New Zealand Test started), so she lost out on a trump player score there. Daaanieeel did not lodge a trump player for the England Test, but luckily, his trump from the previous Test continued....just a reminder that unless you specifically change players or teams in a series, your previously picked players will continue to score for you. It's only for a new Test/series that you need to lodge picks afresh.

Supersubs scoring this round: 4 of us had supersubs in action (and quite decently too at that for most)...Angelo Mathews scored for Daaanieeel in place of Dananjaya, Jeet Raval scored for paper_aero in place of Matt Henry, Sarfraz Ahmed scored for ozzz2002 instead of Tim Southee, while Jos Buttler scored for wwe84 instead of Sam Curran.

The next round will see the start of the season down under....India and Australia start a 4-Test series from December 6....Please do NOT wait for the deadline on the tipping thread...especially if you are in the Americas smile

  • India won a Test in Australia for only the 3rd time in the last 35 years and won the opening Test of the series for the very first time ever! Australia were without 2 of their best batsmen, but their bowling lineup was intact....it was not Kohli who was the difference between the sides but Cheteswar Pujara, who came up with defining knocks in both innings. The Australian middle and lower order fought admirably well in the fourth innings and the Test was far more closer than it appears, but guess India were deserving winners at the end....promises to be a good series, what with the next test a new pitch at Perth!

  • Howie72 takes a spoon this round but is still on the top...his lead has been shaved by a 100 points though...paper_aero is the round's winner, while srini701 has finally started his season....there's a long way to go in this season's comp wink

  • LeoDaVinci and ozzz2002 defaulted this round.

Supersubs scoring this round: Pat Cummins in place of Ravindra Jadeja for ElfTwinkle. wwe84 had a player missing, but then his supersub was also missing in action...it's sheer bad luck for him this round.

The next round from December 14 is again 2 Tests as the New Zealand home season starts. The Biggest round for our season will be the Boxing Day when 3 Test matches take place. Please make sure you don't miss the next 2 rounds smilee

  • India came crashing down to earth after their high at Adelaide. They took one look at the Perth pitch and decided they needed four fast bowlers to do the job even as the home team went with a specialist spinner. Eventually India's number 8-11 together made 11 runs in the whole Test, the fourth fast bowler did nothing, whereas the one spinner Australia picked (Nathan Lyon) went on to be the player of the match...Australia were always ahead despite a brilliant century by Virat Kohli and richly deserved their win....incidentally, their first under Tim Paine and the first since the win early in the year under Steve Smith. The series is very much alive going into the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne.

  • The other Test at Wellington was a batathon, with 1 huge double century, 2 centuries and a ton a fifties...2 Sri Lankan batsmen batted out the whole 4th day and the 5th day was washed out to ensure the Test ended in a stalemate. A pity none of us picked Tom Latham, who went on to make the highest Test score in history while carrying his bat (264).

  • ozzz2002 wondered which Aussie batsman to pick, but that was no cause for worry for him, as he picked a nice little squad to help him win a HoF and move up the ladder a bit. Howie72 is off the top and N-Bomb replaces him there. Daaanieeel continues his impressive run and he had another stellar round. LeoDaVinci takes his first spoon despite picking a decent team...it's just not our day sometimes in this cruel sport, Leo frown

Supersubs scoring this round: A brilliant supersub pick of Nathan Lyon helps N-Bomb. Travis Head scored for Leo (both picked R Jadeja). Dhananjaya De Silva scored for gtho4 instead of Sandakan.

The next round is even bigger, with 3 Test matches starting in the southern hemisphere on the Boxing Day...a game changer of a round, so even if you want your teams from this round to continue, please lodge picks for the South Africa Pakistan series that's starting.

  • Three massive Boxing Day Tests in the southern hemisphere and they all had their moments. New Zealand won their 4th series in a row, with some sterling performances from Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls and Trent Boult. The Kiwis are now #3 on the Test rankings. Cheteswar Pujara continued his fine run in Australia and Jasprit Bumrah became the first bowler from the sub-continent to take five-fors in each of South Africa, England, and Australia in the same year as India beat Australia to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. It was Duanne Olivier all the way as South Africa beat Pakistan in their first Test. 11 wickets for the African fast bowler who was only playing because Vernon Philander was out injured! Wonder who the home team will drop in the second test now...

  • It was a massive round, but none of us really ran away with it...Howie72 took the round's honours and with N-Bomb slipping a little, Howie takes back the lead. gtho4 takes the spoon, almost 700 points behind Howie.

Supersubs scoring this round: Surprisingly, only 2! Rohit Sharma scored for ElfTwinkle in place of Ashwin, while Shaheen Afridi and Mohd. Amir scored for ozzz2002 and paper_aero respectively, instead of Mohammad Abbas. wwe84 named only 4 players each in 2 Tests, but luckily his supersubs were in action to score for him as his 5th players.

This is the year of the World Cup, and so there will be some huge rounds coming up as we enter the ODI stretch of our season leading to March....please research up players from all countries grin

The next round is again 2 Tests followed by a single Test round between South Africa and Pakistan. If you do not wish to name squads, your teams from this round can continue scoring for you the next 2 rounds...

srini, I think you will find Kumara took 3 wickets in the first inning and 2 wickets in the second inning against New Zealand so those of us with him should have an extra 60 points. smile

  • Virat Kohli's team created history by becoming the first ever Indian team to win a series down under in 71 years. Australia were without 2 of their best batsmen, but they still had a world-class bowling line up and a top notch Test team is supposed to be ready with replacements for players. Australia were outplayed in the final Test and it was only rain that prevented India from finishing the series 3-1. David warner and Steve Smith will slot right back into this Aussie side once their bans are over, but it will be interesting to see how the rest of the batsmen shape up.

  • Elsewhere, Pakistan continue to suffer after the retirement of MisYou (Misbah and Yonis Khan) and their batsmen continue to splutter and falter. Dale Steyn and Co. ran through the Pakistan line up to seal a 2-0 series win with one more test to go....no reason to see why it won't finish 3-0, even if the South African captain Faf Du Plessis is suspended from the final Test (for poor over rate).

  • wwe84 and Daaanieeel had 1000+ points once again, with the for former landing his first HoF spot for the season. gtho4 was running on default team from the previous round, but paper_aero still pips him for the spoon and is now looking over his shoulders at a fast surging Daaanieeel.

Supersubs scoring this round: Cheteswar Pujara scored a ton of points for gtho4 and ozzz2002 in place of Ishant Sharma, while Mohd Amir fared decently well for ElfTwinkle and Howie72 instead of Hasan Ali. gtho4 had a second supersub in Asad Shafiq scoring instead of Keshav Maharaj for him.

The next round is the 3rd Test between South Africa and Pakistan from Jan 11 before we switch to the 5 match ODI series between these two same countries (from Jan 19).

  • South Africa duly blew Pakistan away for a 3-0 sweep of the series. Duanne Olivier, the 4th fast bowler of South Africa who may not even have played the series had Philander's fingers been alright in the first test, picked up 24 wickets in the 3-Test series and was the difference between the two sides. He picked up 8 wickets in the 3rd Test as well.

  • ozzz2002 and gtho4 landed two very good sides to pick up some much needed points. wwe84 scored more points with a 4-man team than our spooner, srini701 did with his full complement! Howie72 seems to have built a nice cushion for himself at the top. However, there are plenty of 5-match ODI series coming up now that can tilt the balance a whole lot the other way, so he's till got to be on his toes grin

Supersubs scoring this round: None....wwe84 had Yasir Shah as his supersub and he only picked 4 people, but Shah didn't turn up too...

The next round will see these two same teams square off in a 5-match ODI series from January 19. Remember for ODIs, we need to pick 6 players plus a supersub.

BIG shocker to those of us who have Kohli as "Trump" player for the India-NZ ODI series. He has been rested for the last 2 matches frown

But we CANNOT have our Supersubs scoring in this situation as the supersub only comes into play if a selected player does not play at all, or plays only 1 match in a 5-match series (to balance with the rest of the competition).

Let us just hope Kohli scores 2 huge centuries in the next two matches now wink

  • After the drubbing in the Tests, Pakistan were a different and reinvigorated team in the ODIs as the final preparations for the World Cup began for all teams. The series ended 3-2 in favour of South Africa and all 5 matches were won by the teams chasing, but the biggest news probably was the 4-match ban incurred by the Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed for a racial slur clearly caught on the stump mike in the 3rd match...Both teams had their heros as the home team experimented in all 5 matches, shuffling players and their batting orders. Imam-ul-Haq had a great series for Pakistan while the new player Rassie Van der Dussen and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo were the stars for the home team.

  • Howie72 edged out his nearest rival N-Bomb for the round's honours after we all fared decently well with our teams. Reminder that supersubs will come into play in ODIs if your chosen player in the 6 plays only a single match. If a player plays 2 matches also, the supersub will not score. srini701 lost out on that chance after Faheem Ashraf played 2 matches, scoring 0 runs, taking 0 wickets and holding 0 catches.

Supersubs scoring this round: Daaanieel and ElfTwinkle both had the misfortune of seeing their chosen "Trump" players not play at all....I have therefore allowed their first-named players (Du Plessis for Daaanieeel and Amla for ElfTwinkle) to be their trumps this round. ElfTwinkle unfortunately picked a supersub who also did not play a single game (what are the odds of that happening!) and so had only 5 players scoring for her this round. wwe84 picked the same player (Markram) in his team, and so gets his supersub (Van Der Dussen) to score for him instead.

The next round is the 5-match ODI series between India and New Zealand (India leads 3-1 as I write this) followed by the second and third Tests between West Indies and England.

  • India put on a stellar show as they toyed around and thrashed (yes, Howie, that's what happened wink ) New Zealand 4-1 in the 5-match series...Unless New Zealand were playing smart and keeping their cards close to their chest in prepartion for the World Cup! India has now won ODI series in all countries except in England as they head to the World Cup....they will of course welcome Australia in a couple of weeks first before that.

  • Most of the Indian batsmen got runs and the bowlers all stepped up, while it was just a Taylor and Boult show from the home team. LeoDaVinci picked an all-star cast that all came to the show, barring Mitchell Santner and he is rewarded with a HoF for his shrewd picks. wwe84 takes the spoon and slips behind Leo while the rest of us stay put in our places.

  • Our comp here is resembling a marathon race at the half-way stage, with just a couple of us bunched together but otherwise every one running on our own grin ...there are 3 more ODI series apart from 5 Tests, so let's see if any of us can pull any surprise from here on.

Supersubs scoring this round: Tim Southee featured in only match, while Ravindra Jadeja didn't play at all. ElfTwinkle had both of them in her side. Bhuvaneswar Kumar added some much needed points to her kitty. Ross Taylor and Rohit Sharma helped add points to Howie72 and srini701 respectively.

The next round scores will up soon, as West Indies continue to pull rabbits out of their hats (or has the England team suddenly become so horrible?)... The next round to pick will be the 5-match ODI series between West Indies and England from February 20 after the 3 Test series is done.

  • We didn't do the first Test of this series as it clashed with the ODI series dates....can't mix Tests and ODIs together, you see.....unfortunately, England seem to think they can, and guess they also underestimated the West Indies badly...If they thought the first Test was a "preparation" for the rest of the series, they were in for a shock, as the West Indies countered everything the English could throw at them and proved themselves smarter on a not-too-easy wicket. They got the better of England in less than 3 days for a "shock" and a very significant series win.

  • If you're wondering how significant the result is, consider this: West Indies have not won a Test series against a side other than Zimbabwe or Bangladesh since 2012, when they beat New Zealand. Before that, you have to go back to 2009 (England) and then 2003 (Sri Lanka) for series victories against other teams. A resurgent West Indies is always good for world cricket...hoping this is not another false dawn....

  • Daaanieeel continues to have a good debut season and he lands his first HoF after some near misses...He thus pulls away from srini701 and has paper_aero in his sights next for a possible podium place. We have some more ODI series (bucketful of points) for him and paper_aero to play chess now smile N-Bomb has shaved over 80 points off Howie's lead at the top and these two can also engage in some fascinating chess over the next few rounds smile

Supersubs scoring this round: Only 1....Shimron Hetmeyer scored for Howie in place of Jack Leach.

The next round is the 3rd Test between these two teams....West Indies captain Jason Holder is out of the Test. After that we have 2 back-to-back ODI series (West Indies-England and India-Australia) coming up.

  • England got a consolation win in the final Test, with Joe Root striking form and with a blazing spell of fast bowling from Mark Wood. Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali all had good Test matches against a West Indies side that seemed to lack intensity.

  • ElfTwinkle wins her first HoF for the season, while gtho4, who forgot to name a trump player, takes yet another spoon. Daaanieeel moves past paper_aero for the 3rd podium position, while N-Bomb again shaves a load of points off Howie's lead. That lead, which was over 375 points just two rounds back, is now about 150.... It's once again a wide open race for all our podium places (and just to throw you all off further, watch out for a real wicked googly coming up a few weeks from now grin )

Supersubs scoring this round: LeoDaVinci was playing a default team, so he had Shannon Gabriel score for him instead of Jason Holder. ozzz2002 wasn't as lucky, as his supersub (J Warrican) also did not play to score for him instead of Foakes.

The next round will be the 5-match ODI series between these two teams starting February 20, followed by the New Zealand-Bangladesh Test series.

Six people picked Kemar Roach in their side for the latest round...He's apparently ruled out of the series altogether! Your supersubs will come into play, replacing him.

If any of your other picks play only 1 match in the series, good luck to you smile

  • It turned out to be a good series, for the "Universe Boss" Chris Gayle, who had announced his retirement from ODIs after the World Cup and had indicated this would be his last ODI series at home. Gayle hammered home a mammoth 39 sixes in the series and hit 2 huge centuries and 2 fifties as West Indies held the World Cup favourites England to a 2-2 draw. England clearly has some work to do if they are to live up to the favourites tag at home in a couple of months' time. The batting is clearly clicking for England unless they suddenly implode as they did in the final ODI, but the bowling needs to step up when the opponent batsmen start coming hard at them.

  • Daaanieeel chose a wrong time to go AWOL in our comp. N-Bomb had a miserable round, with 2 of his picks (Roach and Evin Lewis) not playing at all and another pick (Moeen Ali) having a miserable series. N-Bomb's first spoon of the season comes in real handy for paper_aero, who picked Gayle to be his trump player. paper zooms past Daaanieeel, and is now breathing down N-Bomb's neck for the silver medal! This comp has suddenly been thrown wide open again! With another massive, massive round to come in the form of 2 parallel ODI series, it's anybody's game now.....

  • ozzz2002 had a great series and so did gtho4. wwe84 unfortunately did not, with 2 picks not playing and another pick (Tom Curran) doing absolutely nothing in the 2 matches he played. Howie72 has his biggest lead of the season, and let's see if it holds him good stead over the next couple of rounds smile

Supersubs scoring this round: Plenty...for all those who picked Kemar Roach.

The next round of scoring will be up soon...the first Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand.

  • New Zealand hammered over 700 plus runs for the first time in their Test history with their first 3 batsmen all scoring big hundreds and they won by an innings, but it was still an exciting match with the Bangladeshi batsmen (without 2 of their best batsmen) putting up a spirited show, especially in the second innings. It was all good for us, as most of our picks scored the runs and got the wickets!

  • Howie72 and N-Bomb had been 1-2 since the start of our season here and paper_aero was happy drifting along, even allowing our debutant Daaanieeel to overtake him at one point. However, he seems to have woken up at the business end of the season and is clearly the man in red-hot form right now. Last round, he overtook Daaanieeel, and this round, he moves past N-Bomb into the second spot. Howie72 is clearly on his radar now...will the BIG round 15 change some fortunes here? We'll see smile

Supersubs scoring this round: Mehidy Hasan for Elftwinkle, Kane Williamson for ozzz2002, and Tamim Iqbal for srini701, all in place of Mustafizur Rahman, who was apparently being "saved" by Bangladesh for the second Test!

The next round of scoring could well see some more swings in our ladder....it may well end up being the biggest scoring round....and Daaanieeel has defaulted it frown

  • Scoring round 16 picks as round 15, as the last ODIs in both the ongoing series is yet to be played....New Zealand duly thumped Bangladesh by an innings despite losing the entire first day to rain. Ross Taylor (bless him, none of us picked him here after his first Test failure smilee ) scored a double century and Wagner and Boult picked up all the wickets (and some of us had Southee to score double for us cry ).

  • Howie72 has some breathing room going into the final 2 rounds over paper_aero, but will that be enough? N-Bomb and ozzz2002 did not have a good last two rounds as Bangladesh let them both down badly...and there's one more Test of this series to go (with a Afghanistan Test to boot shocked )

Supersubs scoring this round: Mominul Haque (for Daaanieeel) and Kane Williamson (for LeoDaVinci) in place of Mehidy Hasan. Kane Williamson may not play the 3rd Test due to injury, so you may want to watch out for that news.

The next round of scoring could well decide our ladder....the biggest scoring round....and Daaanieeel has defaulted it frown
