The FA Cup, which started in 1872, is the world's oldest football knock-out competition .. season 2018 is the 137th edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in mid-August. The Football Association has accepted entries from 736 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 645 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The all-time record field is 763 teams, which was set in 2012. The 92 league teams are the 44 in the FAPL (20) and FLC (24), plus the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).
  • the 4th and last qualifying round for the 644 non-league teams
    was played last weekend Saturday 20th October.
  • the 32 survivors from the qualifiers progress to the First Round
    where they join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 (equals 80 teams).
  • the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and
    FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams).
  • from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's FA Cup tipping comp will run for a bit over 6½ months over 10 rounds from Saturday 10th November 2018 until Saturday 18th May 2019 (First Round through to the FA Cup Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp we only lodge picks on 8 occasions:
  • the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
  • the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
  • the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
  • that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
  • we also have advance picks thrown in so that all 10 rounds are worth 16 pts each.

The dates for each round in this year's comp are as follows:
    1st Round : Saturday 10 November 2018
    2nd Round : Saturday 1 December 2018
    3rd Round : Saturday 5 January 2019
    4th Round : Saturday 26 January 2019
    5th Round : Saturday 16 February 2019
    6th Round : Saturday 16 March 2019 quarters
    7th Round : Saturday 6 April 2019 semi-finals
    8th Round : Saturday 18 May 2018 FA Cup Final
The rules for the FA Cup tipping comp are simple (they're the same as last year and the years before):
    points

    default


    upsets

    perfect picks

    other bonus pts



    dead-heats
    one point for each correct pick .. home win, draw, away win. In other words,
    it's always at 90 minutes; penalty-shootout lotteries are ignored.
    if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts);
    but if the wooden spoon score is higher, default is the ws score. Default for
    the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
    you score a bonus point if you pick a game solo .. or one of two players if we
    have 10+ runners; or one of three if we have 18 or more runners.
    one bonus point for 10+/16;
    13/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
    no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
    no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win;
    if you pick all home teams or all bar one (or all bar two R1 to R4), ineligible
    for bonus pts.
    weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they
    are identical, bonus pts will be used.

This year's comp is the 17th edition of the FA Cup tipping comp. Last season's comp was won by N-Bomb, who went past Sypher as they reached the finish post to snatch the gold medal (which was a re-run of the 2016 finish, when N-Bomb again went past Sypher at the finish post) .. srini701 is the only person to win this three times and the only person to retain his title (when he won it in 2009 and 2010). He's had three podium finishes in this comp, all gold. Sypher and PaulE hold the record for most podium finishes with five each (one was gold for Sypher and two were gold for PaulE).

Last year's FA Cup comp had a field of 17 runners (down one on the previous year's 18, nasty_liar being the no-show). This year we had 14 runners at the gate when the starter fired his gun. All of us returned for another dose apart from three no shows. They three were FussBudget, illiniman14 and toocool4u.

Just one game was picked by everyone and we all hit pay dirt. Nobody picked the loss by Milton Keynes Dons (srini701 scored a bonus pt for picking Grimsby Town to win) and nobody picked the draws at Gillingham and Oxford.

Gillingham (League One) were held to a draw at home by non-league Hartlepool United .. dg_dave and George95 scored a bonus point for picking an away win.

Howie72 and srini701 were the round's winners with a a score of 11/16 for a bonus point .. paper_aero & ElfTwinkle also collected a bonus point for picking 10+/16.

dg_dave and George95 collected the first wooden spoons for the season with 6/16.

We were all over the place with our picks in Round 1b. The two weekly winners had strike rate of 50% with a score of 8/16. The wooden spoon score was half that at 4/16.

Two games were picked by everyone. One was a hit and one was a miss. We all missed Doncaster Rovers (L2) being held to a draw by Chorley, a non-league team playing in the NL North (the sixth tier of English football).

There were three more upsets, which were also picked by no-one, the most notable being Yeovil Town losing at home to Stockport County, another team from the sixth tier,

Howie72 scored back-to-back weekly wins to join srini701 in a tie for 1st place. They're 2 pts in front of three players in equal 3rd place. From there there's a 2 pt gap to the peloton of seven players (that's half the field), who are separated by 2 pts. Last year's medallists (N-Bomb, Sypher and ozzz2002) are in this pack.

Round 2 is on Saturday 1st December.

Tranmere Rovers were held to a draw at home by Southport, a non-league team playing in NL North (the sixth tier of English football) .. dg_dave scored a bonus point as he picked Southport to win. Walsall held Sunderland to a draw (both of them play in League One) .. N-Bomb scored a bonus pt as he picked Walsall to win.

There was one solo pick .. ozzz2002 picked Swindon Town (L2) to lose at home to Woking, who play in the other 6th tier league (NL South).

The other two bonus points went to the two weekly winners for their 10+/16 effort .. for LeoDaVinci it was back-to-back wins. He replaces joint leaders Howie72 & srini701 at the top of the pile.

wwe84 collected back-to-back wooden spoons with consecutive picks of 4/16.

Dizart, Sypher and gtho4 are still firing blanks .. zero wins, zero spoons and zero bonus points.

LeoDaVinci is 2 pts in front of the peloton (ten players separated by 6 pts). From there there's a gap of 3 points to dg_dave and George95, who are tied for 2nd last .. wwe84 is 4 points further adrift, bringing up the rear. No-one retained their spot from the previous round, apart from wwe84.

Round 3 will be played on the first weekend of the New Year: Saturday 5th January 2019.

We had our best round so far with an average strike rate of 62.1%. Between us we picked all 16 games. Two were picked by everyone and three were picked by everyone bar one.

The draw for the semi-finals took place on Sunday night after the last quarter-final was played. All four semi-finalists are from the FA Premier League (2nd v 15th and 8th v 7th):

Watford v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Watford have played in one FA Cup Final (lost to Everton in 1984), ditto Brighton (lost to Manch United in 1983). We had seven winners in Round 8. George95 scored his 1st weekly win of the season, which plugged another gap in that column and left two players without a win: dg_dave and wwe84.

N-Bomb retained the lead to win the gold medal. Howie72 pushed aside LeoDaVinci, who failed to lodge picks and fell back to equal third with srini701 .. but won bronze on a countback. Sypher and PaulE dead-heated for 5th, a mere point in arrears.

Watford played their second-ever FA Cup Final and again lost. Their first was three decades ago in 1984 when they lost 2-0 to Everton. Manchester City won their 6th FA Cup Final and, having won the FAPL title last week, became the 8th team to win the League & FA Cup Double. The 6-0 scoreline equals the record win in an FA Cup Final, set 116 years ago, when the 1903 final finished Bury v Derby County 6-0.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City continue to sweep all that lies before them; and set records along the way. They won the League Cup three months ago, when they beat Chelsea on penalties after the game finished 0-0 aet; and thus became the first team to win the domestic Treble: League, FA Cup and League Cup.

This year's FA Cup comp was the 16th edition. The defending title holder was N-Bomb, Sypher was last year's silver medallist and ozzz2002 collected the bronze medal.
