Australian Open 2019

A New Year and the first Grand Slam is already upon us! The tennis season barely seems to have started too....can Roger Federer hold his own against a resurgent Novak Djokovic? Or will the next gen stars finally have their say? Has Serena Williams overcome her trauma from the US Open final? We will get some clues when the action begins in Melbourne, Monday 14 January.

N-Bomb and Fifiona81 will try and defend their titles here in our comps. Sign up here if you are interested in knowing how well we know our tennis smile

  • Naomi Osaka won her second straight Grand Slam tournament beating Petra Kvitova in a most dramatic Australian Open finals. In a big-hitting, high-quality match, Osaka squandered three consecutive match points in the second set and looked on the brink of unravelling before re-focusing to win 7-6(2) 5-7 6-4. The Japanese becomes the first player to win two consecutive Grand Slam trophies since Serena Williams in 2015, and the first player to back up her maiden major title at the very next Slam since Jennifer Capriati won the Australian and French Opens back in 2001.
  • It was surprisingly a largely "predictable" tournament by recent women's Slams. By the time the second round was completed, all top eight seeds had sealed a spot in the last 32 – the first time that had happened at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2009. But things began to happen from round 3 and 4 onwards. One of the hot favourites, Angelique Kerber was ousted on round 4, top seed Simona Halep lost to Serena in round 4 and one unseeded player Danielle Collins made a deep run, all the way to the semis, much like Elise Mertens did last year.
  • Only one of us here picked Naomi Osaka to win the tournament! toocool4u was the only one to have faith in the Japanese, but he finished well out of the medals bracket because of his other picks....bad luck!
  • There was heart break for srini701 as well, after he and N-Bomb tied for the 3rd spot...the tie-break difference between the 2 was just one game!
  • Winning the first title then for 2019 ahead of gtho4, is Dizart....who kept faith in both the eventual finalists to reach the semis in his picks. gtho4's pick of Kvitova to reach semis helps him take the silver medal. LeoDaVinci takes the cellar.
  • What surprises do our men's results hold? We'll know tomorrow! For now, CONGRATULATIONS to Dizart, gtho4 and N-Bomb for making the first podium of 2019 smile

  • In the end, it turned out to be a most anti-climactic end to what promised to be a thrilling tournament. Novak Djokovic painted a tennis masterpiece on the court against a strangely listless Rafael Nadal in the finals. Djokovic utterly destroyed Nadal for his 7th Australian Open title and his 15th grand slam title to move past Pete Sampras on the overall list. He is now 2 behind Nadal and 5 behind Federer....Djokovic now holds 3 of the Slams and needs the French Open to complete a second career grand slam.
  • It wasn't supposed to be like this. Nadal was busy teaching all the torch bearers of the "next gen" -- Tsitsipas, Tiafoe, De Minaur -- tennis lessons in successive rounds as he proved the Big 3 aren't ready to give up yet. For a while it seemed the Next Gen is ready to stake their claim, after Kevin Anderson lost early and Tsistipas took out Roger Federer in round 4, and at least 7 of the 20 somethings made it till round 4. Then it all unravelled pretty fast and in the end, order has been restored....it's Novak Djokovic's reign ....till the clay season starts smile
  • Our own comp here seemed set for a cracking finish at the start of round 4...most of us had at least 6 active players (srini701 had 7 players live in round 4). That one round took the air out of our competition and we all fell flat...with a winning score that was 24% of the actual score (48/200), we probably had one of our poorest slams in recent times.
  • But smiling from ear to ear in the end was toocool4u, who takes home his first ever grand slam title(he has 3 silver and 4 bronze earlier, including a silver here in Australian Open men's comp of 2017)
  • srini701 pipped ElfTwinkle to the silver on a better tie-break. Some consolation for him after he thought he was sweeping the comp at the beginning of round 4....we needed tie-breaks for a lot of other positions too...
  • Congratulations then to all our medallists for the 2019 Australian Open, with special Congratulations to toocool4u, and hoping to see everyone return (and pull in more people too) for the French Open in May...

Will be nice to have some chat of any kind every now and then, so we at least know people are reading all this confused smilee

Surprising, isn't it...you have multiple titles in Wimbledon and US Open, and even a title in the women's section here, but the Men'[s section continues to stump you!

I just wish we can get more people to comment on the tournaments, write-ups etc ...just to keep this place more lively...
