Super RugbyThis year's Super Rugby tipping comp starts on Friday 15 February and will conclude after 18 rounds on Friday 14th June. The rules are simple. They're the same as in previous years: points
default
draws
upsets
perfect picks
draw bonus
dead-heats
deadline | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours; but if the wooden
spoon score is more, it's the spoon score.
for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck).
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two tipsters).
of 7/7 scores a bonus point; ditto for 6/6 or 5/5 when there are byes.
no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset
win (same as FLC comp).
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if
they're identical, bonus pts will be used.
is always Thursday midnight FT time, with a period of grace through to
kick-off in the first game which, until April, is just 35 minutes later. If
you lodge your picks late you score zero for any game that has started. |
This is the 18th edition of the Super Rugby tipping comp, first run in 2002! Last year's competition was won by Dizart, with George95 and N-Bomb following him. Howie72 (2017), Dizart (2016), ozzz2002 (2015), PaulE (2014), Sypher (2013) and Howie72 (2012)[/b] were the 6 previous winners of this competition in recent times. As you can see, NOBODY has been able to retain their title in the last few years. Can Dizart break the repeat winner hoodoo? Or will it be a new winner yet again? Welcome to the 18th edition of the Super rugby tipping competition here at Funtrivia. This is my 9th edition of hosting this comp, and will hopefully FINALLY learn the nuances of this game this year. So please forgive lack of match details in the write-ups and do comment each week if possible on the games, so people like me can learn something.
12 of the 13 runners returned from 2018. LeoDaVinci is missing, though he should have just posted "defaulting...will start next week." Default score is "aways" in this comp, and 6 of the road teams started with a win (it was 6 home teams same time last season). The scores seem to suggest there were at least 4 close matches. We all managed to pick 3 games between us (and that was the spoon score). Defending Champion Dizart and perennial podium-resident N-Bomb have started the season well, missing only one match each (the same one for both). George95 and Sypher start with a spoon each, but both have been past winners of this comp, so don't read too much into their score...as Howie72 said "This is just as difficult round 1 to tip as any other season, maybe trickier."
There....I have successfully completed round 1 write-up without a single mention of any team in the comp

Welcome back to LeoDaVinci, which now makes it the same lineup as last season...If 6 away teams won in round 1, the home teams returned the favour this week, with 6 of them winning. The New South Wales Waratahs were the only road team to win, by a single point against the supposed "weaklings" of the competition, the Tokyo Sunwolves. Waikato Chiefs and Gauteng Lions, two traditional stronghouses, both lost away. The Canterbury Crusaders, Otago Highlanders, and Natal Sharks are already the only 3 teams with a 2-0 record.
We all picked 3 matches and missed one, so it was the remaining 3 matches that made a difference to our scores. Elftwinkle, wwe84 and George95 missed only that single match for the round's honours, while Dizart and paper_aero got only those 3 we all picked, for their first spoons.

The Tokyo Sunwolves pulled off a major, major upset on the road, shocking the Waikato Chiefs. 4 Road teams won this round, including Canterbury Crusaders, who are already the only unbeaten team left in the comp after just 3 rounds! The Natal Sharks lost at home after winning their first 2 matches. The Jaguars won their second match in a row at home, but another strong team, the Otago Highlanders lost this round, on the road to Melbourne Rebels. So guess we may not be having the Kiwi sides romp through the competition this whole season, after all.
Our first bonus points went out this round, 4 in all, with Sypher bagging half of them. Those 2 bonus points help him zoom up our table. N-Bomb and PaulE take the round's honours while 4 of us take spoons, including a second in a row for paper_aero. |

The home teams had a field day with all 7 of them winning. 6 of us went with all homes and so get "perfect pick" bonus points (maybe we should add that rule of "picks of all homes don't qualify for a bonus" here too  ).
We had one of our very best rounds as a team in this comp, with 86.5% right picks. PaulE and ozzz2002 missed the deadline for the first match, and if not for some brave punts by wwe84, Sypher and srini701, our overall success rate this week would well have crossed the 90% mark.

As Howie72 said, this must have been a tough round to pick, with matches that could have gone either way. The Waikato Chiefs and the Hurricanes drew their match and naturally no one saw this coming. Sypher and wwe84 get a bonus point for siding with the underdogs. The Crusaders-Highlanders match was cancelled after the tragedy in Christchurch and I have decided to award everyone a point for this tie. George95 and LeoDaVinci take the round's honours, while paper_aero was roundly stumped for his 3rd spoon in 5 rounds.

The Canterbury Crusaders lost for the first time in a century, the Waikato Chiefs snapped a 6-game losing streak in style, surprising a more favoured Bulls on the road, the Queensland Reds won for the 3rd time in a row at home against the brumbies, the Blues shocked the Highlanders, while the Sunwolves, well, continue to lose....and have been axed from the Super rugby from 2021...
A lot was happening on the field but not much in our standings here. ozzz2002 zoomed up the table after a stellar round and a bonus point, while srini701, gtho4 and wwe84 take home spoons. srini701 has 2 more columns to fill now.

Wellington Hurricanes lost a great chance to go top of the ladder after they were well beaten at home by Canterbury Crusaders, who thus bounce back from 2 winless rounds in style. Onl;y one home team won this round, with the Auckland Blues winning over the Stormers. Five road teams won, including another "upset" win for the Tokyo Sunwolves, who shocked the Waratahs. The Waraths sequence this season so far reads LVBVLVL....they will therefore win the next round
gtho4 and PaulE take the spoons this round while 5 of us won the honours. One of the five was Sypher, and this now leaves srini701 as the only one in our comp without a winner's tag to his name, just 7 weeks into the season...

The Auckland Blues have suddenly woken up and have won 3 in a row, while The Stormers have lost 3 in a row. The rest of the teams continue to yo-yo between victories and defeats each round. We had 2 matches picked by everybody here and another 2 matches that had just 2 or 3 right picks. Ozzz2002 was one of the 3 winners this round and he joins N-Bomb at the top. The Canterbury Crusaders (and to an extent, the Tokyo Sunwolves) seem to be the only constant in the world of the Super Rugby this season. The Crusaders won again, while the Sunwolves lost again, while all other teams continue to be most unpredictable...they win one round or two, then suddenly lose when we all expect them to win...like the Waratahs did this week
Five of us won the round's honours, while wwe84, trying his best to rake in some bonus points, took home a second successive spoon. srini701 is still looking for his first weekly win AND his first bonus point, PaulE is still without a bonus point, while ozzz2002 and N-Bomb are still spoonless.

There were 2 draws this week in the Super Rugby  The Canterbury Crusaders were held at home by the Natal Sharks in what should be a big 'upset', while the Highlanders and the Chiefs also played out a draw, the second one of the season for both teams (the Chiefs drew at home with the Hurricanes, while the Highlanders-Crusaders match was deemed a draw after the tragedy in Christchurch). Otherwise 5 home teams won this round, with the Jaguares continuing an impressive run of form (they have 4 wins plus a bye in the last 5 rounds).
srini701 helped plug 2 gaps in this round. He picked a bonus point for picking an upset win for the Chiefs (along with Sypher), and also finally landed the weekly honours, along with gtho4 and George95. PaulE is the last person searching for a bonus point this season, while N-Bomb and ozzz2002 are still fighting shy of cutlery. These two are now joined in a 3-way tie at the top by Sypher.

N-Bomb takes back sole possession of the lead at the top after a perfect round....Dizart jumps into 2nd place after a perfect round. paper_aero also had a perfect round and we could have had one of the finest rounds in this comp's history, but for srini701 and Sypher choosing to try something different.
The Crusaders continue to win and the Hurricanes are now on a bit of a streak. The unbeaten run of Jaguares ended after 5 glorious weeks, while the Sunwolves continue to labour through the comp, failing to trouble the scorers for the second time in three rounds...They can't wait for their season to be over, I guess.

Five home teams won this round...somehow wwe84 thought the Crusaders would lose at home to the Auckland Blues, but that didn't happen...The Jaguares won too, on the road again, but only three of us thought they could do so. Only the Stormers-Highanders match had us all divided.
LeoDaVinci returned refreshed after a min-break to pick the lot for a bonus point, while a bunch of us missed only one match each to make it a decent round for us as a group. ozzz2002 was kind enough to take his first spoon for the season, which leaves us with just 2 blank spaces to fill with 3 rounds to go.
PS: A correction to last week's mention for Howie72... He isn't the first to bag a golden duck in the competition...Davjack did so in round 4 of the 2012 season, only it wasn't recorded in the records book for some strange reason
