This year's Madness comp will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2019 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses). Unlike last year the email doesn't displays your reg'd ID.

The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website: 1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt 2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts 3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen 4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight 5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four 6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final) Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed.

if you'd like to join the Madness tipping comp but do not have a cbssports ID, there's a link on that page to register. You must have a cbs ID to play in this comp! Please note - you may, but don't have to, use your real name to register (surname, first name); but please pick something for those two fields that looks like your FT username (so that we know who you are).
this also applies to those who played last year, but can't remember their ID and/or have changed their email address and thus can't retrieve their password (which they've forgotten) .. you will need to re-register.

This year's tipping comp is the 18th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp and N-Bomb is the only person to win it twice (2011 and 2017) .. gtho4 won last year's comp, silver went to N-Bomb and George95 collected the bronze medal. The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, and the winner of the 2015 comp, toocool4u, hold the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables of last 16 comps in the post below this one) .. and doomed won bronze that year the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp, and the fewest correct picks for gold was 32/63 by blinkybill in 2006.

This year's Madness starts on Thursday, March 21 and the final is on Monday, April 8. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sunday, March 17. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Monday and Tuesday (they will enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponent since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985, until last year, when UMBC beat Virginia 74-54 .. #16 seeds are now 1-135 all-time.

Last year's comp had 15 runners. BxBarracuda is a no-show and four players form prior years re-appear: szabs after six years (last played in 2013), Sypher & yoyoyoandcigs two years (2017) .. plus linkan, who has emerged from hibernation after eight years! (2011)

N-Bomb is the only player who's won this twice over the last 17 years. No-one has retained their title .. and this year will be no different .. gtho4, last year's winner, is miles in arrears in last place.

The two leaders, szabs and Sypher, have never won this .. kevinatilusa, in third place, won this in 2016. George95, in 4th place, won this in 2012.

It's still very early days but, if Duke and UNC progress all the way to the final, it should be a straight shoot-out between George95 (mpt 372 pts) and themonarch (mpt 374 pts). They have both teams to play in the final but different winners. They have three identical teams in the Final Four and whoever is the 4th should make no difference to who wins this comp; it should only affect the margin (on the basis that incorrect picks from now until the Final Four fall evenly between the two of them and thus cancel each other out).

Sypher picks 14/16 and now leads solo .. szabs picked 10/16 and dropped back to 7th place.

Sypher, who has never won this, now has the best mpt figures and joins George95 and themonarch in a shoot-out if Duke and UNC make the final. If UNC win themonarch will beat Sypher by a point (on the basis that their incorrect picks fall evenly and cancel each other out).

If Duke win themonarch needs Sypher to drop at least 15 pts with incorrect picks .. which can happen if #4 Florida State make the Final Four (Sypher has #2 Michigan).

On the other hand, if Gonzaga beat Purdue in the final, dg_dave will win gold. It's still early days, and many permutations are still in there, but the rest of us are probably too far behind to take this off one of those four players.

Sypher picks 3/8 but, nonetheless, retains the lead. His mpt falls from 56 335 by 4 picks to 52 304 .. and they're no longer the best mpt numbers for the run to the finish post.

Back in the middle of the field, N-Bomb was perfect, with picks of 8/8 .. and his mpt is unchanged at 51 285, a mere 19 pts in arrears. If #5 Auburn make the Final Four Sypher will lose 12 pts, which is not enough for N-Bomb to catch him (UNC are out 4pts plus seed plus 6 pts plus seed = 12 pts).

Another scenario: if Duke beats UNC in the final, Sypher will achieve his mpt of 304 pts but George95 (who has also picked Duke to beat UNC) will finish 8 pts ahead of Sypher with 312 pts, ceteris paribus. Going back one round they have the same Final Four except in the West: George95 has #4 Florida St and Sypher has #2 Michigan. That match should determine who finishes ahead of the other.

However, LeoDaVinci also has Duke beating UNC in the Final, but with an mpt of 309 pts. That 5pts more than Sypher, and the two of them have identical picks for the Final Four! Plus, they each have 22 live picks left .. if they're identical, Sypher will finsh up behind LeoDaVinci. But they're not, the two of them have quite a few different picks in the round before the Final Four. Who finishes in front of whom, Sypher vs. LeoDaVinci, should be decided when the Elite Eight are known.

On the other hand, if #1 Gonzaga beat #3 Purdue in the final, all of the above is irrelevant and academic .. dg_dave will win the gold medal, as no-one else has those two to play in the final; and no-one else has a bigger mpt than dg_dave.

Sypher is still our leader. Two days ago, Sypher and his dartboard were leading by 22 pts. Yesterday it was 9 pts. Today it's a mere 4 pts .. and this has created an intriguing finish. Sypher and LeoDaVinci have an identical mpt of 296 and identical picks for the final and the Final Four.

We may have our first-ever dead-heat and see the tie-breaker decide the gold medal. Sypher has chosen 96 pts to be scored in the final and LeoDaVinci has chosen 131 pts. Whether or not we have a dead-heat will depend on their picks for the Elite Eight, which is set out below .. for Sypher and LeoDaVinci to admire.

Yesterday we had N-Bomb with perfect picks of 8/8. Today we had Howie72 and yoyoandcigs go perfect. Howie72 has identical picks to Sypher and LeoDaVinci for the semi-finals and final with an mpt of 286 pts, leaving him 10 pts in arrears. But, if all of his Final Four picks bear fruit, Sypher and LeoDaVinci will drop 6 pts for #2 Michigan and 5 pts for #1 Michigan, which will reduce both of them them to 284 pts .. and Howie72 wins this (again, subject to what their collective picks are for the Elite Eight).

George95 has also got Duke to beat UNC in the final, but his mpt is 16pts behind Sypher and LeoDaVinci, but has only one pick different for the Final Four.

kevinatilusa also has Duke and UNC to play in the final, but has chosen Duke to lose. If that happens he'll win this as the other four will all lose 10 pts from their mpt.

dg_dave, who's in equal 2nd place with LeoDaVinci, will win it all if #1 Gonzaga beat #3 Purdue in the final, as no-one else has those two to play in the final.

The first six have an mpt in the 280s or 290s. I can't see anyone else taking gold from 7th place and down except for perhaps szabs, who has #1 Gonzaga to win, like dg_dave, but her mpt is 17 pts less. As her other finalist is different, dg_dave loses 9pts for #3 Purdue not making the final. From there she needs dg_dave to drop another 8 pts, which may happen as the two of them only have one pick in common for the Final Four.

There are probably some other permutations in there I may have missed; and I haven't gone through the Elite Eight picks to fully calculate possible mpt finishes. Below is a complete list of the Elite Eight picks which, together with the Final Four, two finalists and the winner, sets out all of our picks for the remaining 15 games in this year's March Madness. For those of us who are interested in or fascinated by numbers, there are 128 permutations of the remaining 15 games.

ozzz2002 and gtho4 don't figure in any of the 128 permutations, as their mpt is below Sypher's current score. They have the honour of being the first to retire to the grandstand as mere spectators; the first to be eliminated.
