Hi all! I am an avid reader of Fantasy Novels in my spare time! I thought I'd make this thread to share favorite books, and comment on them! Some of my favorite authors in the genre are Terry Goodkind, Terry Brooks, Jennifer Roberson, J.V. Jones, Tanya Huff, and many many many others! -Scarlet

Lois McMaster Bujold.
If you're a fantasy fan, start with Curse of Chalion. If sci-fi, you can't beat her Shards of Honor. (Actually you can - with the sequels - but those won't make much sense without the context. If you do get that far, Mirror Dance is the most thought-provoking sci-fi I've read in a long time, and A Civil Campaign is hilarious.

Right now I'm on the 2nd of the 'Farseer Trilogy' by Robin Hobb, excellent and different. I also like Ursula Le Guin, and of course J R R Tolkien.

I'm a rabid SF/Fantasy reader.
My current favorite fantasy authors are Steven Brust (Taltos, Jhereg, Phoenix, Dragon, Yendi, The Phoenix Guards, Five Hundred Years After and others) and Michelle West (Hunter's Oath, Hunter's Death and others).
My current favorite SF authors are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller (who co-wrote Partners in Necessity, Pilot's Choice, Plan B and I Dare).

I've enjoyed lots of sci-fi and fantasy in the last 30 years but Andre Norton has always been one of my favorite writers. Recently I discovered Sheri Tepper, and I find her to be similar to Andre Norton but with better developed characters and stories. I've read 3 of her books so far and all of them were great: "The Visitor" (her newest), "Grass" and "The Fresco". My favorite books are those that combine elements of both sci-fi and fantasy.

Grass starts what might be called a series, but the characters are totally different and separated by solar systems and by hundreds of years. The middle of the two, Raising the Stones, was my first Tepper read and got me hooked on her work. I don't think I'd ever looked at existing social systems in the way she does. I'd also recommend The Gate to Women's Country (not part of a series).
