Having my signature based on the question does the brain create or receive consciousness, it has raised a few fascinating private messages, and just found an hour long interview with Dr Peter Fenwick, a neuropsychiatrist, who explains it better than anyone else has managed so far. Well worth looking up if you are interested in the area, and would suggest we exist as eternal consciousness inhabiting a current body, only limited as we aren't able to remember life outside it, but some people both remember and experience it, so know, but aren't able to show their experiences to anyone else so it's beyond objective proof.

You still have to be conscious to see it, and if you are conscious you are alive. And if you can leave the body and still be conscious (as many do and return to tell the tale) it is not dependent on having a body.
