Sign-up Sheet

The ICC Cricket World Cup begins in England in less than two weeks (May 30 to July 14). The top 10 teams in world cricket will be seen in action in the 6-week tournament. Australia start as the defending champions, but England has put together a monster squad since the last World Cup in their bid to win their first ever World Cup title. India will probably be among the favourites too...

Tournament Format: Each team plays every other team in the league stage, meaning 9 matches to every team. Top 4 make it to the semifinals.

We will have our own sweet little comp here to decide who's the best guesser of us all smile The 2015 edition had 12 runners (lowest in all editions) and Howie72 won the comp, followed by Dizart and wwe84. The 2011 edition had 20 people lining up and George95 won it, with N-Bomb and sward351 making up the podium. 2007 had 13 runners and Howie72 won it (followed by Copago and gtho4). The 2003 World Cup saw 23 tipsters enter the comp with ASA clinching the title (followed by gtho4 and silverginger).

Scoring is simple. We just pick the result of each match and win a point for every correct tip. Bonus points if you pick a result solo (or 1 of 2).

Sign up here if you'd like to take part in this short competition that starts May 30.

Tie-breaker rules for placings:

If 2 or more people finish equal on scores, they would be placed according to the following tie-break rules:

1. The differential between HoF and wooden spoons (whoever has higher difference places higher)
2. If still equal, person with more number of HoF awards places higher
3. If still equal, person who makes more right tips in matches played (45 in league stage)...bonus points scored will not come into picture for this
4. IF STILL EQUAL, God save us smile

Welcome to the tipping comp of the 2019 ICC World Cup! 13 of us have started this edition, 1 more than the last in 2015. We welcome dg_dave, Daaanieeel, LeoDaVinci to this edition (illiniman14 and BxBarracuda missing from last edition's line up).

It promises to be a good, fun event with some terrific batting and bowling (and some stupendous fielding and catches) over the next six weeks. The pitches in England have all become good highways and unless it rains or becomes overcast, the batsmen will make merry. It promises to be an open World Cup though England start as huge favourites to win it all, and they did start in style, easily beating South Africa in the opener. South Africa then went on to lose to Bangladesh too, in the first "shock" of the tournament. In between, Pakistan were overwhelmed by West Indies, New Zealand hammered Sri Lanka while Afghanistan fought briefly before going down to Australia.

We all started with either a HoF or a spoon. With only 5 matches per round, there may not be much movement around for a while and things will probably heat up once the "big" guns play each other and we differ more in our picks.

The World Cup is up and running! Pakistan bounced back from their opening defeat (and 11 losses in a row in ODIs) to beat England quite comprehensively. They did seem to dominate the World Cup favourites in all aspects of that match. India opened their campaign with a clinical win over the South Africans, who are suddenly finding their own campaign in a bit of a disarray after 3 losses in a row. Bangladesh and New Zealand fought a close battle and Australia regrouped from being 79/5 against West Indies to post a winning score and then fended off the Windies' challenge for their second win in a row.

wwe84 took a punt on South Africa while srini701 thought West Indies can shock Australia. Both did not come off, so we are still looking for our first bonus points of the comp. A bunch of us in the lead, and we will all probably continue to ride along for some more way.

Oh to be in England in June when it rains...rains in June? Really? is it common there? or are you guys finally believing in "global warming" now? Please let me know if rains in June is a common sight in England...

Anyway, with 2 matches falling prey to rain this round (free points to everyone smile ) and with all of us concurring on another 2 matches (big wins for England and New Zealand), it was just the India-Australia match that made the difference to whether you found your name in blue or red this round. India put on a clinical display on a belter of a pitch to hand the Australians their first defeat in 11 matches. Still early days in tournament, but guess the South Africans have now found themselves in a "perfect storm" situation. They are not out of the tournament, but need to win every single game from here on. Can they?

The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup is already on record as the "Wettest" tournament ever. Two more matches fell prey last round, and "Rain" now tops the current points table with 8 (points for a win). Previously unbeaten India and New Zealand were affected too, as were Sri Lanka (again) and Bangladesh. Australia and England seem to have escaped the rain wrath though and they managed to notch wins in their matches.

Are Australia really good, or were the other teams that bad? I really thought both Pakistan and Sri Lanka had their chances against the defending champions, but Australia just gritted their teeth and got the job done. Fortune favours those who deserve it smile We all picked the 2 Australia match, so the 4 of us who thought West Indies would beat England take the spoon this round, while the rest of us win the "honours". LeoDaVinci makes the first default of the comp.

There seem to be two different leagues of teams out there. The top 4 are already pretty much clear and we are all picking them to win...Can't blame Daaanieeel for hoping for Afghanistan to beat South Africa, while srini701 thought a cornered South Africa would come out fighting against the New Zealanders to keep their World Cup hopes alive. It was not to be, and we are left with a bunch of us taking the honours again and the aforementioned 2 taking spoons. It will probably be the remaining matches between the "bottom" 6 (Pakistan, South Africa, West Indies, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka) that will probably separate us from here on in our table.

LeoDaVinci defaulted last two rounds and has lost out on 3 potential points from both advance picks to date. George95 defaulted this round and has lost out on 2 potential points.

The World Cup exploded to life this weekend. After Australia managed to get the better of Bangladesh in a very high-scoring match (they didn't dominate or batter the Bangladeshis, mind you), hot-favourites England managed to surprise the whole world by going down to a Malinga-inspired Sri Lanka. This is certainly the biggest upset or shock of the World Cup so far. It only gets trickier from here for England with their last 3 matches to come against Australia, India and New Zealand.

Saturday then saw two very close matches. India did themselves no favours by just scraping past Afghanistan, the tournament's whipping boys. It was sheer inexperience of the Afghans and maybe the bowling strength of the Indians which saved them for a major embarrassment. New Zealand got the better of West Indies in the best game of the World Cup so far to keep up their unbeaten run. South Africa then duly completed their implosion on Sunday, losing to Pakistan and bowing out of the race for the semifinals.

We were all once again "all or nothing" in our picks in 4 of the 5 matches. The 3 who picked Pakistan to win take the round's honours, and Dizart takes sole possession of the lead at the top.

We are finally beginning to spread apart with different picks. As the matches get closer and teams are beginning to jostle for the top 4 spots, our point spread is increasing too. None of us thought Pakistan could beat New Zealand, but they did just that, and continue their very eerily similar run as the 1992 World Cup campaign (their first 7 matches now show the EXACT result as in 1992). Back then too, they had ended a previously unbeaten run of New Zealand by 7 wickets in their 7th match, finishing it in 49.1 overs. Now also they won (by 6 wickets though), to end the unbeaten run of New Zealand, in 49.1 overs.

ozzz2002's punt on Afghanistan did not come off, while those of us picking Sri Lanka to beat South Africa were left red-faced after the South Africans finally woke up in their World Cup campaign. Australia thoroughly dominated England while India did the same with West Indies.

Dizart's run of HoFs came to an end (he picked 6 consecutive HoFs from round 1) and he's joined back in the lead by Howie72 (remember these 2 are our toppers from 2015 too). dg_dave continues his honeymoon ride in the comp and is now joint 2nd. LeoDaVinci and George95 defaulted yet again and have officially given up on the comp as they gain nothing from any advance picks now.

The semifinal lineup is more or less set now. India won comfortably over Bangladesh to ensure their place in last 4. Australia thrashed New Zealand, and should wrap up first place too. England bounced back from 2 bad defeats to comfortably beat India and is on track.

Sypher had the first perfect round of the comp, and he joins Dizart in the lead (unfortunately no perfect pick bonus this comp, so sorry, Sypher). Those of us who had our misplaced faith in the Windies beating Sri Lanka, take the spoon. LeoDaVinci woke up suddenly and spoiled the chances of Sypher and ozz2002 scoring the comp's first bonus point, so we are still looking for one smile

It took us 9 rounds and 45 matches for the first bonus point of the competition, but we finally got it smile LeoDaVinci, with nothing to lose after defaulting all the advance picks, went on a limb and picked South Africa to beat the Australians. They did, and in the bargain, turned the whole World Cup and our comp on its head....The Australians suddenly find themselves packing their bags and travelling to play the hosts England in the semis, while India suddenly find themselves as the league toppers and a semifinals against New Zealand! Australia have NEVER lost a semifinals while England are playing their first semifinals in 27 years.

LeoDaVinci also had a perfect last round and he shoots up our table. He will also probably be left kicking himself when our final results are out and he will find the advance picks making the final difference to the standings smile A bunch of us are huddled together in second place now. Sypher and paper_aero had picked Australia to be group toppers, and they would have got that 1 point, if not for that last league match. Now suddenly there are 7 others getting that 1 bonus point instead (srini701 picked England, while gtho4 and ozzzz2002, much to their chagrin now, went with their cousins from across the channel).

India was made to play a 2-day International instead of an ODI, so they lost in the semifinals tongue No matter what Howie will say, I feel India would have won had the match finished on day 1 itself. That's no excuse anyway for the so-called "best top order" in world cricket, as Trent Boult and Matt Henry ripped them up under cloudy skies. England proved my point by literally thrashing the reigning World Champions even under outcast skies. "The World Cup's coming Home" and it's only a match away now....unless Kane Williamson decides to put a spoke in the wheel....but the Kiwis have always been too good and gentlemanly, right....we'll know by Sunday who the new World Champions are smile

I didn't award any HoFs or spoons this round. gtho4 and ozzz2002 get solo pick bonus for trusting New Zealand to beat India. Nobody got all 3 bonus points from their advance picks either (strangely, gtho4 was the only one who picked New Zealand to make it to the finals). And after all that New Zealand backing by their Aussie cousins, we have only wwe84, Sypher and paper_aero left with a live pick for the winner (England). The rest of us all chose India or Australia to win it all.

The final's worth 2 points, with another 3 advance bonus points for winner, so maybe Sypher can still have a say in the final podium here.

England won and the World Cup's come home, but New Zealand did not lose it. So much has already been written in thousands of papers and articles and websites about the greatest One day match ever to be played, that there's nothing I can add to, so let's just leave it all to that one little word "luck" (or "Fate" if you are an Indian)...I did like this one para from a writer on the ESPNcricinfo website, so I shall quote it here:

"if it isn't luck that a little white leather globe no more than nine inches in circumference thrown from the deep midwicket boundary 60 to 70 metres away hits a moving piece of willow that may be no more than 38 inches in length and no more than 4.25 inches wide held by a human being diving to the ground and deflects off it, with enough speed, to an area of the field that is not patrolled by one of 11 men and goes for four, then what really is luck?"

Look at our final leaderboard...3 Englishmen and 2 New Zealanders at the top....is this just luck too? We were randomly placed all over the tournament the last 6 weeks, but the final placing makes this look spooky crazy tongue

Congratulations to Dizart for leading from start to finish. Sypher and paper_aero's steadfast faith in their team from the start help them take the other 2 podium spots. Howie72 and N-Bomb went with India as their advance picks, otherwise they would have been up there too...the only other person who could have gate-crashed the whole party was LeoDaVinci, had he lodged his advance picks and stayed with us the last 2 rounds....it was not meant to be....see, that's why this is all called "Fate" wink
