LOL....our women's comp has ended at the quarterfinal stage! Not a single one of our projected semifinalists has made it....

This is a massive "First" here I guess....will be fun to see winning score %

  • This has SERIOUSLY got to be the craziest tennis comp we EVER did here in all these years! I don't ever remember a single comp where our interest died at the quarterfinal stage itself. Not a single one of us had a live semifinalist by the time the last 4 stage was reached! And to think between us we picked 7 of the 8 quarterfinalists!
  • The tournament itself was that crazy. Agreed the women's game is quite unpredictable these days and you never know who will win it all, but at least one or the other top players has been making it to the final stages in most tournaments. But this year's Roland Garros takes the cake. The 4 semifinalists (Ashleigh Barty, Marketa Vondrusova, Amanda Anisimova, and Johanna Konta) BETWEEN them had a 3-12 record at the championships in ALL their years of playing it till 2019! Anisimova was playing her first French Open but none of the others had ever gone past the second round, and Konta had never won a single match there till this year!
  • So with those kind of stats, it's only fair to say this has been the craziest French Open in many, many years. Two teenagers made it to the semifinals and whether this is a one-off or shows the continuing churn in the women's game, Wimbledon will tell us in a few weeks' time. For now, 23-year-old Ashleigh Barty becomes the first Australian Roland Garros singles champion since 1973. She will rise to No.2 in the rankings too.
  • Sypher did well to pick 4 of the quarterfinalists, including Vondrusova, and this helps him pip ozzz2002 to the gold by 2 points. ozzz2002 also had 4 of the quarterfinalists, but he picked a seeded Petra Martic over the unseeded Vondrusova. srini701 also picked the Czech teenager and this helps him land the bronze medal.
  • 3 of us tied for the sixth place and a tie-break was needed. Dizart and gtho4 tied for the wooden spoon and a "better" tie-break score helps Dizart avoid a second successive spoon in the women's section (he finished dead last in 2018)
  • What do the men's results have in store for us? We'll know by tomorrow.

  • There's nothing that's not been written about the "King of Clay" that I can add to, so I will not write about the championship. His win was NEVER ever in doubt once he was fit, and gtho4 and ozzz2002 should have known by now it's futile to bet (or pick) against the Spanish Matador at Roland Garros. Dominic Thiem did extremely well though to reach his second consecutive finals at the French Open, besting the world No. 1 in the semifinals, and he's a champion in the making. His time will come for sure....once the King retires!
  • For the first time in 488 tour events, the top 4 ranked men on the ATP tour made it to the last 4 (2012 Australian Open was the last time the top 4 ranked men made it to the semis together in a tour-level event). Some of us had more faith in the next gen star Tsitsipas over the ageless wonder Federer, but we didn't factor in that other Swiss guy in our thinking. And rightly so, Stan Wawrinka made all the difference to our rankings here. He helped one of his backers amidst us to the podium!
  • Between us we picked ALL the quarterfinalists (including the surprising run of Karen Kachanov) and that shows how much predictability is there on the men's tour compared to the flux in the women's.
  • Fifiona81 picked 7 of the 8 quarterfinalists (rather surprisingly, missing Wawrinka) and 13/15 picks and richly deserves her gold medal. wwe84 had "only" 10 right picks, but that included Wawrinka, and he takes the silver medal, well ahead of Dizart, who bounced back from his despairing show in the women's section for a bronze in the men.....
  • Not so lucky was gtho4, who completes a miserable French Open by doing the spoon "double"....I bet he will be plotting his revenge at SW19 now smile
  • And so on to the green grass of Wimbledon from 1st July then...
