Wimbledon 2019

The tournament starts Monday, 1 July. Djokovic and Nadal asserted their supremacy in the first two slams of 2019. Can Federer join them by winning Wimbledon? Or will it finally be a newcomer this year? Which woman player will be the last one standing (as we never know who's winning there or not).

N-Bomb and LeoDaVinci will defend their titles here in our comps, and toocool4u finished on both podiums last year ....If you think you can get your name among the honours list, please sign up here. Tipping threads will be up soon as the draws are out.

  • The women's game continues to be in a state of flux. Winner last week is no guarantee they will win this week again. The one constant seems to be a certain legend losing in the finals now....Serena Williams lost her 3rd finals in a year since here return from maternity leave (Wimbledon 2018, US Open 2018 and Wimbledon 2019 now) and she is still searching for that elusive 24th singles title that will tie her at top of the charts forever with Margaret Court.
  • Simona Halep won her second slam at the expense of Serena Williams. She was consistent throughout the fortnight and deserved her win. There were "upsets" and "shock" defeats all over the place as all the "favourites" flew out of the windows in the first three rounds. For the FIRST TIME since the 32-seed rule was introduced in 2001, half the quarter-finalists were unseeded!
  • Barbora Strycova was looking to retire from the game and instead she found herself in a slam semifinals. Johanna Konta continued her good run from the French Open and raised the home hopes a lot, but she came a cropper in the last 8. A lot of us had high hopes on Czech players, but the one who finally made it to the last 8 was not a Kvitova or a Pliskova, but a Muchova smile
  • wwe84 withstood the carnage of the players and came away as a very deserving winner in our comp here. He only picked the two finalists and Konta, but they were enough to land him the gold with a very decent score too... paper_aero also had faith in Konta and she helped him take the silver, ahead of LeoDaVinci. The rest of us were so so far behind, it doesn't matter what our scores are smile
  • Wait....it does....take a look at the bottom of the ladder...you will find a most unusual name with a most unusual score there smile

  • It turned out to be the longest final ever at Wimbledon and is being considered among the 3 best Grand Slam finals of all time. Tragedy is, the man losing all of them seems to be the same....Roger Federer, soon to be 38, is still playing vintage and classic tennis all the way to the finals, but like Serena, seems to be stumbling on the last block. Novak Djokovic won the "most mentally draining" match of his career for his 5th Wimbledon title, 3rd slam in a year, and 16th title overall. The two above him now....Nadal with 18 and Federer with 20...who's to say he won't one day be on top of the pile?
  • It is a testimony either to our knowledge of the men's game, or the consistency in men's tennis as compared to the women's game....10 of the 12 of us picked BOTH the finalists, and ALL of us picked either of the 2 finalists to be our winner...Other than Guido Pella, we picked all the quarter-finalists.
  • Sam Querrey was the only unseeded player in the quarter-final line-up. Itís the first time in four years (since Vasek Pospisil in 2015) that an unseeded man has made it to the last eight at The Championships. It was also the 3rd time in the last 4 years that Querrey was making it that far. Only fair then that all who picked him finished on top of our pile here. But it turned out to be David Goffin who made the difference.
  • 2 people picked Goffin and they ended up 1-2 in our standings. Howie72 won his 3rd men's title at Wimbledon (after 2007 and 2015) by a comfortable margin over George95. 3 of us tied for the bronze medal and srini701's better tiebreak score helps him pip Dizart and N-Bomb for the podium. Notice that 4 of the top 5 in the men's section finished the bottom 4 in the women's section....
  • And in a nice twist to close this year's championship, our women's section winner takes the spoon in the men's .....on to 2020 now grin
