2019-20 TIPPING COMPETITION

FT Premier League

This year's FT-PL comp will be the 17th edition of this head-to-head tipping comp. For those of us who are unfamiliar with this comp, it's a round-robin league system where everybody plays everybody else twice (aka home and away) .. everyone picks the 10 weekly games played in the FA Premier League. The winner of each match receives 3 points and it's one point each for a draw .. aka if you pick 8/10 and your opponent picks 6/10, you win and collect the 3 pts. Whoever has the most pts at the end of the season is the winner! Goal difference will be used to split dead-heats and then HoF vs WS countback. If you fail to lodge picks you receive the wooden spoon score.

This year's comp will run for 9 months from Saturday 10th August 2019 to Sunday 17th May 2020. We don't play all 38 rounds in the FAPL as we run this comp with a maximum field of 18 runners over 34 FT-PL rounds: we omit four FAPL rounds, being the one that straddles the New Year, the weekends with the FA Cup quarter-finals and semi-finals, plus the weekend with the League Cup Final.

Unlike other comps in here, where you may simply post your picks in the first tipping thread *or* sign-in, you must sign in, here in this thread, to enter this comp, so that the weekly head-to-head fixtures can be put together. If less than 18 sign-up, that's the field. In the unlikely event that more than 18 apply, see sequence [A] to [E] in here for the culling procedure.

To allow time for the weekly schedule of who's-playing-who to be, firstly, put together and, secondly, posted in here into tipping threads, the deadline for signing-up is 12 midnight FT time on Wednesday 31st July. There's a grace period of two or three hrs, but please don't push your luck past that. Creating the weekly round-robin schedule does take time; and we have just two weeks between closure of sign-ups and the start of the comp.

Please note that, despite the tight time-frame, this deadline is flexible; it's not set in concrete. Last year we extended it for a week as we didn't have enough participants and delayed the start to the second week of the FAPL (i.e we skipped the first week and re-inserted the round straddling the NY). This year the second week starts on Sat 17th August 2019.

The defending titleholder is N-Bomb, who won it from Dizart and srini701 (who dead-heated for second, 5 pts in arrears) .. gtho4 and paper_aero dead-heated for 4th a further point in arrears. If we have a field of 16 we play 30 FT-PL rounds by omitting another four: another three over the NY to create a mid-winter mini-break plus Week One (the comp starts on Sat 19th Aug). If we have 14 runners we delete the three mid-week rounds plus Sat 21 Dec (which extends the mid-winter break to one month). Please note that if we have an odd number of participants there will be a "bye" each week. The bye will be scored as the average of all other players ignoring fractions e.g. if you're drawn "to play" the bye and the average of all other players is 5¾ (i.e. excluding your picks) then the bye will score 5/10. If we do start with a bye it will allow a late starter to join the comp by replacing the bye, coming in using the bye's pts so far. This will only be available until the end of August.

We've got 10 runners so far but we're looking for 16, same as last year. Sign-up will be left open
for another week to Wed 7th Aug, to see if we can snare a few more .. and the FT-PL comp will
now start on Sat 17th Aug. It looks like we'll end up with a field of 14 runners.

If you're going away in August on holidays and want to lodge tips in advance, you can use the FAPL
tipping threads. I'll copy them over when the FT-PL threads have been put together and posted.

In the interim, the first three threads are up (with a bye). R1 is Sat 17th August. If anyone sign-in before* the end of August he or she will replace the bye in each round. If no-one signs in the bye will continue to play the rest of the season. The bye will score the average of the other 14 runners, rounded down (aka fractions will be ignored) e.g. you're playing the bye & the average of the other 14 runners is 5.79 you will: o win if you pick 6 or better o draw if you're just below average with a 5 o lose if you pick 4 or lower In the unlikely event that the average is a whole number, the bye will score the next lowest number (consistent with the theme that you will draw if you score just below average). * if he or she signs-in after 17th Aug they will replace the bye in the standings
