Yes. More Madonna today. A little story first. The comedienne Julie Brown (who I had included in this thread with her video "Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun") had done a feature length spoof of Madonna's "Truth Or Dare" tour entitled "Medusa: Dare To Be Truthful". It was moderately funny but one line from that spoof has stuck with me all these years which was to the effect (can't remember the exact words) "My doctor says I'm borderline". Maybe that's what Madonna meant. (Just kidding, although I could buy that diagnosis for her.) Anyway, every time "Borderline" comes up, I think of that. Well, here it is. Madonna's "Borderline": https://tinyurl.com/y7pg6yerI know Madonna didn't really intend the song (which I think is very good) as a commentary about her mental state, but she sure did "reinvent" herself a lot, didn't she?

It's been a long time since I've done anything from Bananarama. Too long. Here's Bananarama with "Cruel Summer": https://tinyurl.com/yapnp9aqTo any Americans out there who may be reading this today, Happy Independence Day! Remember freedom? Before this cruel summer? Well get out there and make some freedom for yourself. Have a barbecue.

Back to The Bangles. Here's "Walk Like An Egyptian": https://tinyurl.com/ybmphdjlHorribly cheesy, I know, but it is iconic 80s so I had to include it sooner or later. Might as well be now.

I had to include this next one sooner or later, so might as well be today. Here's Madonna with "Like a Virgin": https://tinyurl.com/y37p6kc7Never quite understood the point of having the lion wandering around. But it did make a good thing for Weird Al to parody.

I return to The Pointer Sisters for "Neutron Dance" as made famous in "Beverly Hills Cop". Wish I could do Eddie Murphy's laugh: "Ha ha ha!" https://tinyurl.com/y6cjkpge Some great songs came from Beverly Hills Cop 1 & 2

Yes. You are definitely correct about that. I return to The Police for "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic": https://tinyurl.com/y5r377fg

I do a lot of songs that were part of movie soundtracks. The 80s is full of great movie music. Although pop is my favorite genre of music, some of the songs I've posted here are definitely not pop. There are obviously some genres I prefer more than others, and conversely, there are some genres of music I actively dislike. I really detest most rap music, for example, but even with rap, there are occasional songs that fit in that genre that I like for some reason. As it happens, I'm not a big fan of heavy metal, as most of it sounds like screaming to me. But I was a fan of the 1981 "Heavy Metal" movie, which is full of violence and vulgarity. Why exactly is difficult to explain. I was a freshman in college at the time and I just thought an R-rated fantasy cartoon that was intentionally overkill was wickedly funny and creative. And I liked its theme song, "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)". It can be argued that despite its title, the song is not actually heavy metal. For one thing, it's from Don Felder, who had been on The Eagles, not exactly a heavy metal group. But even after all these years, I still love the song and the movie that it was featured in. So here it is, "Heavy Metal (Takin' a Ride)" by Don Felder: https://tinyurl.com/y5q5lacyNow that really wasn't much of a video as far as visuals go. The song was tied to the movie, of course, so a traditional music video for it was never made. But perhaps a clip from the movie containing the song will provide greater context: https://tinyurl.com/yxw96ewjAs for the movie, its hard to believe people like John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis were voice actors in it, but it's true. Here's a movie trailer: https://tinyurl.com/y5yam6qa

Time for a second round with Asia with "Only Time Will Tell": https://tinyurl.com/y56vbcnoI had some difficulty finding the video I remember of this song from the 80s. Copyright issues. There are other versions, which is why going to the search page rather than a direct link to the video can have its advantages.

I've always had a problem with this song, as it's about cheating on his girlfriend while she's "on a vacation far away". Also, he "likes his girls a little bit older". He "just wants to use your love tonight", and mentions not to tell anyone. I hope I'm not the only one skeeved out by this song, regardless of the catchy tune...?

The lyrics of songs can often be disturbing, especially when taken literally. Perhaps the singer actually meant them that way, perhaps not. I don't know. I happen to love The Police's "Every Breath You Take", but as I commented when I posted that song, the lyrics are disturbing. It is practically a "stalker anthem". As far as The Outfield's "Your Love" is concerned, I find those lyrics less disturbing. Imagine if the line had been "I like my girls a little bit 'younger' ." I think that would have provoked even more outrage. I despise "gangsta rap" specifically because it deliberately idealizes and even promotes violence, misogyny, drug use, and numerous other social ills. I happen to like music with a melody and not just a pounding beat. So, yeah, maybe I do give pop songs a bit of a pass. I'm not for moral relativism, but these are songs, not actual actions. Then again, I like Grand Theft Auto too, so maybe my moral compass isn't perfect. Anyway, a new (for this thread) singer for today: Here is Thomas Dolby with "She Blinded Me With Science": https://tinyurl.com/y2p8ssf6Now if that doesn't give you some idea of my inner psychopathology by choosing that song, go back to my first video in this thread and then look at the others that follow bearing that in mind. I don't claim to be perfect. I do like these songs I post.
