US Open 2019The final Grand Slam of the year begins Monday, 26 August. Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic start as defending champions on the court, while Howie72 and Fifiona81 will try and do the same here. 6 Slams in 2019 saw 6 different winners so far in our comps here....Will there be 2 more new names in 2 weeks? - Should we start with the new champion Bianca Andreescu or the other champion Serena Williams? Bianca Andreescu became the 5th different winner of the US Open women's title since Serena Williams won her 6th title (and 3rd in a row) back in 2014. Since then, Flavia Pennetta (2015), Angelique Kerber (2016), Sloane Stephens (2017), Naomi Osaka (2018), and now the 19-year old Bianca Andreescu have all won the title. Nobody has been able to retain the title and Serena Williams has lost the last two finals. This was Serena's 4th loss in a Slam Final since her return from having a baby, and she's still searching for that elusive 24th Slam title that will tie her with Margaret Court.
- Bianca Andreescu meanwhile becomes the quickest to a Slam after a certain Monica Seles did it back in the 1990s....this was just her 4th slam in all and she was making her US Open debut! She will hopefully go on to win many more slams
 - It wasn't the slaughter of seeds as in most recent slams and for a change, the 25th seed Elise Mertens was the lowest seed in the quarters (and she had a backer here too!). Between us we managed to pick 6 of the 8 quarterfinalists (including one for Donna Vekic, but surprisingly none for Johanna Konta, who had reached the semis and quarters of both the French and Wimbledon this year!)
- After 5 second place finishes in the last 8 years, N-Bomb has finally won his (SHOCKINGLY) FIRST title here in our competition. He picked both the finalists and also picked Belinda Bencic to reach the quarters. He was head and shoulders above the rest of us, so well done on your first title here, sir
- Last year's champion Howie72 rode the Andreescu-Serena bandwagon to a silver medal this year, while ozzz2002's pick of Donna Vekic landed him the bronze. A bunch of us had only Serena Williams scoring all our points and separating us via our tie-breaks (srini701 and Fifiona81 were separated only by the alphabets in their names), and wwe84 takes the spoon for this year.

- The greatest warrior sportsman of our generation proved yet again that that no matter how many times he is knocked down by his frail body, his warrior spirit will always find a way to triumph! The only man to reach semi-finals or better at all four Grand Slams in 2019, Rafael Nadal won his 19th Grand Slam title and completed the French Open-US Open double for the 3rd time in his illustrious career. He's now only 1 slam behind Roger Federer and the "Big 3" has now swept the last three years' worth of majors, winning all 12 since the start of 2017.
- Daniil Medvedev is here to stay, though and he more than proved he was a worthy finalist in a tremendous final that lasted close to 5 hours. Medvedev has the best hard court record for the year and we will surely be seeing more of him in the Slams in the years to come!
- After hot favourite Djokovic got himself knocked out with a injury to his left shoulder, it turned out to be an interesting lineup. Grigor Dimitrov, who had a horrible year all year long, turned giant-killer, besting Roger Federer in the quarters. Matteo Berretini became the first Italian to reach the US Open semifinals in 42 years and only the fourth Italian to make a Grand Slam semifinal in the Open era, which began more than 51 years ago. Gael Monfils had a tremendous run, as did Stan Wawrinka and Diego Schwartzman. And most interestingly, other than Dimitrov, we picked ALL the other quarterfinalists in our picks here!
- Fifiona81 becomes the first person to defend their title in our comps here in the men's section since srini701 did it back in 2006 and 2007. For the record, ElfTwinkle won back-to-back French Open titles in 2007 and 2008 for the only other instance of 2 wins in a trot in a slam here!! No one has ever defended their title at the Australian Open or Wimbledon in the men's section! (We are a little better in the women's section where srini701 won 3 titles in a row in the Australian Open and also defended his US Open title once, while N-Bomb defended his French Open title once).
- Sypher takes the silver medal after picking Wawrinka to reach the quarters (he also picked both Djokovic and Medvedev, who were also in the same quarter of the draw, to reach semis), while Howie72 makes it a good US Open for himself by becoming the only person to land medals in both sections.
- It turned out to be a US Open to forget for wwe84, as he lands spoon in the men's section too, to go with the one he took in the women's. I'm sure he will be looking to bounce back in 2020.

- Fifiona81 did a "Rafael Nadal" here, winning both the French Open and US Open in 2019 - We had a very even spread of medals this year, with gtho4 possibly being the ONLY ONE NOT to win ANY medal in 2019!
