The six matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed last week. The six winners joined the 26 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place on Thursday 29th August 2019 in Monaco. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2019-20. Once again most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 17th September (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the UEFA Champions League Final will be played, after almost 8½ months, on Saturday 30th May 2020 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey [it was built for the 2008 Olympics but Turkey lost out to Beijing]. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 11th December 2019 and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 18th February 2020. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points

upsets
perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts),
however, you receive the WS score if it's more than the aways. Default for
the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point ... or 1 of 2 if we have 12
or more runners, 1 of 3 if we have 18 or more runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;

We've had multiple winners of this comp, but no-one has won it back-to-back to successfully defend their UEFA title. N-Bomb won it last year from Dizart and Howie72. Howie72 has been on the podium six times, without a win; and Sypher has been on the podium four times for zero wins.

This year's Champions League has 26 teams qualifying direct to the Group Stage of 32 teams. Once again a total of 79 teams, from the 55 UEFA member nations, qualified for this year's competition (no team from Liechtenstein*) .. 26 direct to the group stage (inside the white rectangle below) and two to the play-off round (countries #12 and #13) .. 10 of the other 51 teams progressed through the four qualifying rounds, to join the two who qualified direct to the six play-off round games. Those 12 teams are the ones outside the white rectangle. The 32 teams in this year's group stage are:

6 runners-up from countries 1–6
5 third-placed teams from countries 1–5
4 fourth-placed teams from countries 1-4
6 the six survivors from the play-off round

. Three years ago we had a field of 18 runners, then a field of 16 the year after (two no shows were AlonsoKing and nasty_liar). Last year we had 15 runners (illiniman14 was the no show).
This year we had a field of 13 line-up at the starters gate, with three no shows: George95, ElfTwinkle and ozzz2002. There's a newbie this year: KrivoyRog, who's back for another dose after a six-year holiday. In other words, after snaring zero newbies for two straight years, we've finally got one. Welcome back!
The field in this year's comp, the 17th, equals the all-time low of 13 runners set ten years ago in season 2009-10:

Round 1 of 19 saw just two of the eight games with double-digit correct picks. Four games were picked by no-one, or by one or two, which gave us two weekly winners with 4/8: Sypher and gtho4. At the other end wwwe84 collected the wooden spoon with a 0/8 duck.
There were four bonus points for solo picks .. and one of them was scored by Sypher, who's our leader at the end of Day One. Behind him is a four-way tie for 2nd place, one of which is the defending titleholder, N-Bomb .. he won the Grand Slam last season and is defending four titles: FAPL, FT Premiership and FA Cup, as well as the UEFA Champions League.
The next round will be played in your neck of the woods either this afternoon or tonight or tomorrow morning, as the case may be: UEFA ( 2 ) Wed 18th Sep. The first two games kick-off in just under 3½ hours.

. Round Two saw five weekly winners and just the one wooden spoon.
Two games were unanimous picks .. one hit pay dirt and the other was a fizzer.
Back-to-back wins see Sypher retain his lead out front.
Once again there were four bonus points for solo picks .. and one of them was scored by PaulE, who jumps up from 6th to join KrivoyRog in equal 2nd place.

. Bayern Munich booted Tottenham Hotpsur out of the park and into the middle of next week; Spurs lost 2-7 at home. This was their first-ever home game in which they conceded seven; and the first time they've conceded seven goals in a cup tie, home or away.
That upset, and three others, saw Sypher fall from 1st to 3rd and KrivoyRog fall from 2nd to 8th. The two weekly winners, PaulE and Howie72, now lead the way.
One game was a unanimous pick: Real Madrid to win at home; and we all got it wrong.
Once again (for the 3rd consecutive round), there were four bonus pts for solo picks .. the two weekly winners plus dg_dave and wwe84 picked either Red Star to win at home or Atalanta to lose at home. The seven of us who picked Red Star to lose were looking good as they were 0-1 down until .. Olympiakos were reduced to ten men in the 58th. Red Star equalised four minutes later and then scored two more in the 87th and 90th to win 3-1.

. Take a close look at the numbers for this round, as you may not see them for another 17 years and another 309 rounds of picks (this season is the 17th edition). Our highest strike rate across those 17 years was 78.9% in R16 of the 2011-12 comp, when all the home teams won. We achieved our first-ever strike rate above 0.8 with a whopping 84.7%.
If Shakhtar Donetsk were able to score just one more goal we would've ended up with an outrageous 93.3% .. .. and nine of us would've had perfect picks! Shakhtar were leading 1-0 after 16 minutes but found themselves 1-2 down in the 60th. They equalised in the 75th minute but couldn't find the winner in the remaining quarter of an hour.
George95 and ozzz2002 receive the wooden spoon score as they failed to lodge picks. Their timing was impeccable, as the spoon score of 6/8 smashed the all-time high of 4/8 .. in other words, we saw a 6/8 spoon score without seeing a 5/8.
The upshot is that *ten* of us were this round's winners with 7/8 (which filled three blanks in that column), three collected a spoon each with 6/8, and PaulE continues to lead the way .. his margin is now out to 2 pts as Howie72 collected one of the three spoons.

. The triple dead-heat out front is gone. Sypher collected a wooden spoon and dropped off the podium to 4th. He took dg_dave with him .. which left N-Bomb, the defending title-holder, all on his lonesome leading the way.
The other wooden spoon was collected by ozzz2002, his first for the season.
LeoDaVinci picked 6/8 for the weekly win. He missed the two upsets at Napoli & Barcelona. He climbs up *six* places from 10th, his personal low for the season (achieved last week), to 4th, a new personal high for the season .. aka a personal low and a personal high in consecutive weeks.
It was almost a perfect rendition of musical chairs .. N-Bomb in 1st and gtho4 in 9th were the only players who kept their spot from last week.
The first six are now separated by 3 pts, down form 4 pts last week .. and from there the next six are covered by a mere 2 points.

. We had four winners with 6/8. N-Bomb scored his 2nd in four weeks (before that he had none) and he's skipped away to a 3 pt lead. LeoDaVinci scored his 3rd in four weeks and is now equal 3rd .. he was running 10th three rounds back.
N-Bomb scored the only bonus point, as if he needed it!
KrivoyRog collected the wooden spoon, his 3rd for the season. He now has the biggest collection of spoons, with three of the blighters adorning his kitchen bench.
While N-Bomb now has clear air ahead of him, the rest of us are battling to keep up, elbows and all .. the six behind him are now separated by a mere 2 pts (it was previously 3 pts).

. We had seven winners (almost half the field) and five of them are behind N-Bomb, whose margin out front was reduced slightly from a mammoth 4 pts last week to what's still a very healthy 3 points .. and four of those five are still separated by a single point .
From there we still have a gap of 2 pts to a peloton of seven, who are separated by 4 pts. The previous round had a peloton of four who were separated by just a single point.

There were just two bonus points: ozzz2002 and wwe84 found their old Ouija Boards, out back in a shed, and saw Ajax losing at home to Valencia, which eliminated them from the Champions League as they slipped to 3rd place in their group. They move across to the Europa League (knock-out rounds).
Valencia progressed as group winners despite finishing level on pts with Chelsea and with an inferior GD. They did so on the results of the two away and home ties against Chelsea (1-0 win away and a 2-2 draw at home) - see Article 17 of the Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2019-20 (there is a link to these regulations in the first post in this thread, back in September), which sets out the sequence of tie-breaker procedures used when two or more teams finish level on points at the end of the group stage.

. Last round toocool4u &d LeoDaVinci collected a wooden spoon each. LeoDaVinci was this round's winner .. he almost picked the card with 7/8 (he missed the away win by Juventus) .. and toocool4u collected another to back it back-to-back wooden spoons.

There were just two bonus points: ozzz2002 and Sypher picked the away win by Juventus.
That completes the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. At this stage last year, N-Bomb was leading with 63 pts (same as this year) by a margin of 3 pts (same as this year). He went on to win the comp, for the first time.
No-one has retained their title since the first UEFA comp 16 yrs ago in 2003-04. Will he become the first to win back-to-back titles?
The draw for the KO round will take place next week on Monday 16th Dec in Switzerland. The eight group winners are seeded and cannot be drawn against each other .. and they cannot be drawn against the runner-up in their group or a team from their domestic competition.
We now have a mid-season winter break until mid-Feb 2020, the 1st leg of the KO Round: UEFA ( 13 ) Tue 18th Feb.

. A truckload of upsets gave a strike rate of 26.0%, the 7th worse strike rate since the first comp some 17 years ago back in 2003. There were 8 games played and only Chelsea's loss at home to Bayern reached double figures.

He left these four on the bench: Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Fernandinho. N-Bomb foresaw this and scored a bonus point for his efforts. Spurs lost at home to Leipzig. Olympique Lyonnais beat Juventus in yet another upset .. wwe84 scored a bonus pt for this solo pick. No-one picked Atletico to beat Liverpool. We all picked Liverpool to win in Madrid except for two: PaulE and LeoDaVinci, who scored a bonus point each for picking a draw.

N-Bomb, the defending titleholder, extends his margin out front to 5 pts. He's on track to become the first to win back-to-back titles (no-one has retained their title since the first UEFA comp back in 2003-04).
The next seven players, 2nd to 8th, are separated by a mere 3 pts; and of those seven, the five running 2nd to 6th are separated by just one point!
