Rugby World CupThe 2019 Rugby World Cup starts later this month, on Friday 20th September. New Zealand are the defending champions. This is the 9th iRB World Cup and, over the last 32 years, all finalists and winners have come from the top four rugby nations. The winners of the first eight were: Winner Runner-Up 3rd place 4th place 1987 New Zealand 29-9 France Wales 22-21 Australia 1991 Australia 12–6 England New Zealand 13–6 Scotland 1995 South Africa 15–12 New Zealand France 19–9 England 1999 Australia 35–12 France South Africa 22–18 New Zealand 2003 England 20–17 Australia New Zealand 40–13 France 2007 South Africa 15–6 England Argentina 34–10 France 2011 New Zealand 8–7 France Australia 21–18 Wales 2015 New Zealand 34-17 Australia South Africa 24-13 Argentina |
The 20 finalists for 2019 have been split into 4 groups of 5 teams: Pool A
Ireland Scotland Japana Russia Samoa ` | Pool B
New Zeland South Africa Italy Namibia Canada ` | Pool C
England France Argentina USA Tonga ` | Pool D
Australia Wales Georgia Fiji Uruguay ` |
| Rounds 1-5 pool matches x40 Round 6 quarter finals Round 7 semi-finals Round 8 Bronze Medal World Cup Final | Fri 20th Sep to Sun 13th Oct Sat 19th & Sun 20th Oct Sat 26th & Sun 27th Oct Fri 1st November Sat 2nd November |
|
As was the case with prior iRB Wold Cup tipping comps, there will be 8 rounds in the tipping comp with 8 pts each round. The comp will run for 7 weeks with one round each weekend, except for the 2nd round which will be mid-week (see list of tipping threads in post below). Advance picks will be lodged in Round 1 for the four semi-finalists, and in Round 2 for the two finalists and the winner. The rules are the same as those used for the Super XV tipping comp: points default draws upsets perfect picks draw bonus dead-heats | one point for each correct pick. if you forget to pick, the wooden spoon score is all yours. for those brave souls amongst us, you can pick a draw (good luck). if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point (or one of two if more than 12 runners). of 8/8 scores a bonus point. no-one picks a draw, bonus point for the minority who picked the upset win (same as FLC and Super XV comps). weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback. If they're identical bonus pts will be used; and then the advance pick for the winner. |
This is the 5th edition of the iRB World Cup tipping comp. The first was 16 years ago! The previous medal winners were: 2003 Dazzy_D silverginger Bertho 2007 jonnowales srini701 jill-geo 2011 LeoDaVinci paper_aero Howie72 2015 Dizart srini701 PaulE
This is how LeoDaVinci responded to his 2011 win: Wait a second, what sport was this? :P No-one has retained their title or won this twice .. srini701 is the only person who's been on the podium twice; and the gap was eight years! Will the defending titleholder, Dizart, set a new benchmark by winning this again? Sign-in here to watch the aussie Wallabies beat their kiwi cousins, the All Blacks, in the World Cup Final!

A field of 13 runners (3 less than in 2015) lined up for the start of the 5th edition of the iRB World Cup tipping comp. 12 of us have returned, 4 dropped off (Davjack, ElfTwinkle, illiniman14, KrvivoyRog) and we managed to entice back LeoDaVinci.
This is the first time the tournament is being held in Asia and outside the traditional strongholds of the game. All the expected teams won their opening matches without much fanfare. The most exciting one was the France-Argentina tie, which was anyway expected to be close. France won the match, much to the delight of 6 of us here, and now Argentina have a mountain to climb to get out of the pool, including against England. Don't write off the Pumas yet.....England is supposedly a favourite, but remember they crashed out in the pool stages 4 years back when they hosted it.
Ireland-Scotland was also supposed to be close, but Ireland showed why they are the world's number 1 ranked team going into the World Cup. New Zealand stamped their credentials against South Africa and the rest of the field will now be more wary of the All Blacks. Australia won too (our 3 Aussie friends here will shoot me if I don't mention their team), but can they go far? Let's see
We started off on a strong note here with 6 of us going perfect. As a lot, we managed an impressive 91% hit rate, but guess that's par for the course for this tournament in the opening rounds. Sypher and ozzz2002 went for upsets that didn't come off, so they start with spoons.
The 32 semi-finalists over the first eight World Cups were:
7 New Zealand 6 France 6 Australia 4 England 4 South Africa didn't play in first two 2 Wales 2 Argentina 1 Scotland
All 13 of us have picked New Zealand and England to be in the semis. Surprisingly, World number 1 Ireland had only 5 backers. Australia had fewer backers than South Africa (but the South Africans lost their opening match, so what do we know?). There should be an upset or two along the way (the favourites can't win everything), and the podium finishers in our lot here should be the ones who go for an upset that will pay off. All will be revealed over the next six weeks. |

Two upsets saw our strike rate fall to 70.1% .. no-one picked the loss by Fiji but dg_dave jagged the loss by Ireland! He scored a bonus point for this effort and climbs up the table from 7th into a six-way tie for 1st place.
It was also a six-way tie after the Round One .. George95 collected a wooden spoon and dropped out of the leading pack (replaced by dg_dave).
That's two down and six to go. Our advance picks are summarised below. All of us have picked the All Blacks to win the World Cup. The winner of this compo will probably be determined by the other advance picks.
Five of 13 players have unique advance and eight have seven identical advance picks: Dizart, dg_dave and wwe84 .. N-Bomb and srini701 .. LeoDaVinci, PaulE and paper_aero. |

I didn't get to see your reply until after the the Japan match. Looked at the round four and scroll down to the bottom but there was no place to place a message. So I assume it is closed perhaps the next major sporting event.

Thanks George, for the two previous rounds ....We missed only 6 picks between us and they are all listed in the table above. 98/104 (94.2% strike rate) correct picks means the rugby world is so very predictable, even to Indians and Americans here
The group stages continued to throw up some very predictable results. Argentina bowed out of the World Cup with a win. South Africa moved into the quarterfinals, while Scotland kept their hopes alive too. The last round may see a couple of good matches, if the weather in Japan permits...
8 of us had a perfect round here. dg_dave somehow went for a draw in the France-Tonga match, but it didn't quite come off. Otherwise we would have had 9 perfect here. wwe84 takes another spoon and slips to the bottom.

The last round of the World Cup pool matches were all about Super typhoon Hagibis that struck Japan on Saturday. Three matches were cancelled, deemed as 0-0 draws. This caused some consternation in some players and teams (Italy's player Sergio Parisse called it "ridiculous that there was no plan B"). As Howie72 pointed out, Italy still became the FIRST team EVER NOT to lose to New Zealand, in a pool match at the Rugby World Cup.
Sunday's matches still went ahead (though Dizart was pretty sure they'd call off Scotland's game to ensure the hosts moved ahead, and Scotland did threaten to sue the organisers if their game was cancelled). In the end, Japan required no favours from the weather, and they proved their win over Ireland was no fluke, as they beat Scotland too to make it to the quarterfinals for the first time (they won 3 out of 4 pool matches in 2015, and still went out)....to better summarize it, in the words of The Guardian correspondent, "Some results deserve to be lit up in neon and this historic victory for Japan was one of them. Never before has any team from Asia reached the quarter-finals of a Rugby World Cup, let alone played such an inspirational brand of rugby. This was not just an emotional occasion for the host nation but an electrifying moment for the global game as a whole. Because this was finally the day when the patronising tier two label still used by some to denote Japan’s status in the sport officially ceased to exist. As was the case against Ireland, the Brave Blossoms were irresistible at times and were more than good value for their four-try success against a Scotland team who, for only the second time, are going home before the knockout stages commence."
England topped Group C after their match against France was cancelled; New Zealand topped Group B; Japan topped group A with their win over Scotland; while Wales topped Group D with an all-win record - the first time they have done so since 1987. The next post summarizes the pool standings.
5 of us had a "perfect" round but no bonus points were awarded this round because everyone got points for the 3 cancelled games. dg_dave missed the first game, but still gets a gimme point as everyone else picked Australia. He also picked USA to beat Tonga and so misses out on a perfect round. The Japan-Scotland tie split us down the middle, and the 7 who went with Scotland take the spoons for the round.
The quarterfinals will be played over the coming weekend...

Sorry for being a pain in the butt, but I was hoping I might be allowed to make predictions on the Quarter Finals. If so I noticed that you have halftime and full time, so do you have to predict both, and if so what if you think it might be be a draw at h/t or f/t?

Llynfi, you are MOST WELCOME to join the comps at any stage...please lodge picks from round 6 onwards (you will start at the default score and will probably miss the advance picks). I can probably still let you lodge advance picks for the finalists and winner (if others are OK with it too ) ... in that case, you need to do it in round 6 itself.

The quarterfinals weren't quite up to the expectations, I guess. England blew out Australia (was it expected? or was it a surprise?) in the first quarterfinal. I realised they were telecasting the rugby world cup live in India, and watched the first half of the New Zealand-Ireland match. I don't know anything about the game, but I found it ridiculously one-sided as the New Zealanders seemed all over the Irish. I shut it off after the score read 22-0 in 30 minutes (turns out that was the half-time score too) and switched back to watching India maul the South Africans in cricket . Wales overturned a first-half deficit to beat France, while the hosts fought hard against South Africa but came up short.
We didn't exactly have a smooth sailing here. George95 had a perfect round, and vaults up to joint first place, while gtho4 takes a spoon and slumps to the bottom. Our comp is pretty wide open at this stage as our advance points kick in from the next round. Only 4 of us (LeoDaVinci, N-Bomb, srini701, Sypher) picked the entire set of 4 semifinalists, while only N-Bomb and srini701 are left with 2 potential live finalists. 6 of us have already lost a finalist, and at least 5 more will lose one after the semifinals. We welcome Llynfi belatedly to the comp. I offered Llynfi the chance to lodge advance picks for the finalists in round 6, but maybe (s)he didn't get me
The semifinals will be played over the coming weekend...

England put on an imperious display of defensive prowess to shatter New Zealand's dreams of a hat-trick of world titles. In the other semifinals, South Africa reached their third World Cup finals, holding off a gritty Wales. South Africa have never lost a World Cup finals and their last World Cup win in 2007 was at the expense of England....we are in for a tenacious finals on Nov 2.
With New Zealand out, we are all left fighting for a maximum of 4 points in the finals (some of us only for 3 points), which means our podium will be from those with 50 points and above only. 4 of us picked the semifinal lot for 4 advance points and Sypher added a sole pick bonus for picking England, but he left it too late...I allowed our newcomer Llynfi 2 advance pick points as everyone of us picked both New Zealand and England.

South Africa win the World Cup for the third time. They won it in 1995, 12 years later in 2007, and 12 years later once more in 2019. The last time around, they beat England 15-6 and this time, nearly doubled the scores, to 32-12. The 20-point margin of victory is the biggest since 1999 when Australia beat France 35-12. South Africa also set another rugby world cup record - No team has ever lost a World Cup game and then gone on to win the World Cup - South Africa lost their opening pool game this time to New Zealand. Kudos and Congratulations to the new World Champions!
For what it is worth, New Zealand signed off their campaign with a consolation win over Wales to take the 3rd place.
N-Bomb wins our competition by a one-point margin after sticking faithfully with South Africa. paper_aero takes the silver medal on a better tie-break score (more bonus points), while nothing could separate our bronze medallists, LeoDaVinci and srini701. Howie72 just falls short of a podium place.
srini701 blew his chances away of winning this competition outright by picking "England" to lead at half-time. He had a better tie-break score than N-Bomb, but wavered while lodging his final picks .... and paid the price
Here's hoping newcomer Llynfi will continue to join other tipping comps here as well....Thank you all for this edition...till the next time then...
