I'm a huge fan of the late James Herriot. Anyone else read his books?

Without a doubt -- big fan here. I have most, if not all of his books. In fact, when I want to "take a vacation" I re-read the original series. I would love to take a trip to Yorkshire some time in my life.

I, too, have most of his books and read them again and again. I never get tired of them. I usually read them in bed at night before going to sleep, and my laughter keeps my husband awake!

I would really love to visit the Yorkshire Dales. He makes them come alive in his vivid descriptions.

I just recently read his official biography written by his son, James. I highly recommend it to all James Herriot fans!

Thanks Bally for the biography information. That is a book I will certainly make an effort to find.

The book is called "the Real James Herriot". It was written by his son, James Wight and is published by McClelland and Stewart Ltd. It certainly is very informative!

I have read them all, numerous times. My sister has a weekend cottage in the village they filmed the television series.

My mom's a Herriot fan. She tried to get me to read them, but I didn't take to them. (I think they're brilliantly written though!)

My mother was a huge fan, and she got me started reading his books. I love them--have them all.

You feel as though he's talking just to you. The stories are wonderful but sometimes heartbreaking. Glad to see this admirable human being on this site. ThankYou.

If you see a post about books that make you cry - that was me in a past life saying how much I love these books and how one minute you are laughing, the next shedding a tear!! Believe me on British Transport you get a few funnny looks. JH knew animals so well though. The TV series is excellent too!!

I know exactly what you mean. When James was describing the time he had to put an old man's only companion (dog) down, I was in tears. Yet, in the next chapter, there was laughter! Not many writers can do that!

For those who play quizzes, check out Ballykissangel's quiz on James Herriot.

Terrific quiz.

I think I've got all the James Herriot books too ... eread them all when I was much younger, and just keep on re-reading them from time to time. Of course, living on a farm, I can also relate to many of the stories io nhis books.

How could anyone NOT love his books? I too have them all, and read them over and over. My dog likes them, too.(*grin*)

I started watching "All Creatures Great and Small" because I am a fan of Doctor Who and Peter Davison is in both.
Then my mom got the books and I started reading them.
They are indeed very good!

Still, having watched "All Creatures...", I was a little nervous whenever Siobhan (vet from Ballykissangel) was featured in the show. I read an article that said the actress was nervous too, because she had seen "All Creatures..." and didn't particullarly want to do all of the things they did in that show!
