2019-20
Tipping Competition

A-League football (soccer) is back for another year so get your names down and your dartboards out for another lucky dip.
The rules as the same as last year:
  • Threads will close prior to the start of the first game.
  • A bonus point will be awarded for a perfect score.
  • Bonus points will also be awarded for anyone that tips a result solo.
  • Ties at the end of the season will be broken in the following order:
    1) HoF/Spoon differential
    2) Most Hall of Fame awards
  • Picks of all home games - not eligible for any bonus points.
  • Default will be equal to the lowest score each round.
  • Late starters will be given a score equivalent to the last-placed active tipster.
The first round starts on Friday 11th October. The weekly fixture lists have been posted. All rounds bar one will kick off on Friday evening local time and threads will close at kick-off in that first game (R13 starts on Wed 1st Jan 2020).

This year's comp will be the 15th A-League season. Last year LeoDaVinci won his first-ever Al-League title. N-Bomb is the only payer to win this comp more than once (three straight prior to last season plus one six years ago .. aka four of the last six comps). Will this season see LeoDaVinci retain his title? All will be revealed over the coming months.

  • Welcome to the 2019-20 tipping competition of torture where blind guesses work better than any semblance of knowledge, aka the A-League soccer competition. This year we have 10 runners: we welcome all from last season except ElfTwinkle. Last season LeoDaVinci ended N-Bomb's title run at 3 though N-Bomb still made the podium in 3rd spot with paper_aero sandwiched between them. Will LeoDaVinci start a dynasty of his own or will someone dethrone him? All will be answered in the coming months.
  • wwe84 forgot to bold his tips for the first and last games so I had no choice but to make them void.
  • The season started like last year with Adelaide hosting Sydney and the game did not disappoint with 5 goals, 3 VAR interventions and a red card. Adelaide came from 2-0 down to draw level early in the second half before having a player sent off, this proved to be a turning point with Sydney grabbed a late winner to start the season with 3 points. Western Sydney went behind at home to Central Coast in the 36th minute but it was not for long as they tied it up 5 minutes later. It took a VAR intervention to award a penalty to the Wanderers for hand ball in the 82nd minute and they duly scored what proved to be the winner though the penalty taker cleared the ball off his own line right on full time to keep the win intact. More than 33000 fans turned up for the first Melbourne derby of the season but in the end the bitter rivals could not be separated and it ended goalless, Victory going closest with a goal disallowed for a narrow offside. A very different Wellington to last season hosted debutant Western United from Melbourne and it was the visitors who emerged with a win at their first attempt after a 34th minute strike, the Phoenix's biggest problem this season looks to be scoring goals as they lost their 2 main goal scorers from last season and have not been able to replace them with proven goal scorers yet. Perth looked to be on the verge of starting their season with a win at home over Brisbane when leading 1-0 heading into stoppage time. However there was late drama as the Roar equalised in the 5th minute of stoppage time, it was initially ruled out for offside but upon checking by the VAR it was shown to be just onside so the goal stood and it finished 1-1. Newcastle Jets had the first round bye.
  • By A-League standards it was a decent start to the season for us as we went just 20/48 for a strike rate of 41.66%, well up on the 20.00% start in 2018. There were no perfect games with the closest being Western Sydney's win which saw Sypher being the only one to miss out. There was one game wich we all got wrong as no one picked Perth's draw at home to Brisbane, we had 8 home wins, 1 draw and 1 void.
  • Our defending champion, LeoDaVinci, starts the season in style with a solo weekly win by going 4/5. There were 3 recipients of the first round of wooden spoons with wwe84 going 1/3 and paper_aero and Howie72 both going 1/5.
  • LeoDaVinci finds himself out in front by himself, 1 point ahead of gtho4 with a group of 5 a point further back. There is a 3-way tie at the bottom.

  • We had a full house this week though George95 missed the first game with late tips.
  • It was history in Melbourne as Western Sydney beat Melbourne Victory at Marvel Stadium for the first time after 2 early strikes in the second half took them out to a 2-0 lead, a Victory penalty with 20 minutes to go lead to some nervous moments but the Wanderers hung on for a famous win. Weston United's home debut in the A-Legue did not quite go as well as their away debut but they remain undefeated after a 1-1 draw against Perth Glory after the manager's son equalised with a wonderful header with 14 minutes to go, Perth had to play in their training kit as their playing kit got lost on the flight from Perth to Melbourne. The F3 derby also finished 1-1, Central Coast took the lead with a 4th minute goal but Newcastle tied it up with a retaken penalty after the Mariners goalkeeper saved the spot kick but was adjudged by the VAR to have left his goal line before the ball was struck, the Jets being successful with the second attempt. The home team almost won it at the end with a terrific strike only to see it hit the post and the Mariners had to settle for a home draw. Two first half goals put Melbourne City firmly in control at the break over Adelaide but the visitors stepped in the second half to pull a goal back, however it was not enough to overcome the lacklustre forst half performance. Adelaide do not have long to try for revenge as these 2 teams meet on Wednesday in the FFA Cup final. Sydney started strongly against Wellington and scored in the 17th minute after a massive deflection wrongfooted the Phoenix goalkeeper. For most of the remainder of the game Sydney were on the back foot, Wellington equalised but a superb finish after a poorly hit free kick was enough for Sydney to claim all 3 points, Wellington had a player sent-off for a horrible tackle which did not help their late their chances of a second equaliser.
  • Round 2 was even better than round 1 as we went 27/49 for a strike rate of 55.10%, does this mean we are starting to get the hang of A-League tipping finally? There was one perfect game as we all tipped Sydney to beat Wellington. The trickiest game to tip was Western Sydney's win away at Melbourne Victory which only ozzz2002 foresaw and as a result picks up a bonus point.
  • We had 2 weekly winners as both ozzz2002 and srini701 went 4/5. There were also 2 wooden spoons handed out with paper_aero and LeoDaVinci both going 1/5, this being back-to-back spoons for paper_aero to start the season.
  • With his weekly win and bonus point, ozzz2002 finds himself out in front with a 1 point lead over gtho4, wwe84 and srini701. At the bottom, paper_aero finds himself 2 points adrift of N-Bomb and Howie72.

I've decided instead of writing the word DRAW with RED in it for the A-League, FAPL, FT-PL, UEFA CL i just leave it unbolded if i think it would be a draw.
