The FA Cup is the world's oldest football knock-out competition (started in 1872). The 2020 comp will be the 139th edition. The preliminary qualifying rounds started in mid-August. The Football Association has accepted entries from 736 teams for this season's FA Cup, comprising 645 non-league teams plus the 92 league teams. The all-time record field is 763 teams, which was set in 2012. The 92 league teams are the 44 in the FAPL (20) and FLC (24), plus the 48 teams in League One and League Two (24 each).- the 4th and last qualifying round for the 644 non-league teams
was played last weekend Saturday 19th October.
- the 32 survivors from the qualifiers progress to the First Round
where they join the 48 teams in L1 and L2 (equals 80 teams). - the 20 survivors from the Second Round will join the FAPL and
FLC teams in the Third Round (equals 64 teams). - from there it's a straight knock-out through to the final in May.
This year's tipping comp will run for a bit over 6½ months over 10 rounds from Saturday 9th Nov 2019 until Saturday 23rd May 2020 (First Round through to the FA Cup Final). Although there are 10 rounds in the tipping comp, we only lodge picks on 8 occasions, as follows: - the First Round of 40 games will be split into two rounds of 16 games each by ignoring 8 games.
- the Second Round has 20 games .. 4 games are ignored.
- the Third Round of 32 games is be split into two rounds of 16 games each.
- that's 5 tipping rounds which, with the remaining 5 rounds, gives us 10 tipping rounds.
- we also have advance picks thrown in so that all 10 rounds are worth 16 pts each.

The Football Association have, for the first time, moved a
round from the weekend to mid-week. The dates for each
round in this year's comp are as follows:
1st Round : Saturday 9 November 2019
2nd Round : Saturday 30 November 2019
3rd Round : Saturday 4 January 2020
4th Round : Saturday 25 January 2020
5th Round : Wednesday 4 March 2020
6th Round : Saturday 21 March 2020 quarters
7th Round : Saturday 18 April 2020 semi-finals
8th Round : Saturday 23 May 2020 FA Cup Final The rules for the FA Cup tipping comp are simple. They're the same as last year and the years before, but with these two changes: o default is now the wooden spoons core for all rounds (not just the semis and the final); o ineligibility for bonus pts if you pick all home, or all bar one or two, has been removed. points

it's always at 90 minutes; penalty-shootout lotteries are ignored.

have 10+ runners; or one of three if we have 18 or more runners.
one bonus point for 10+/16;
13/16 or higher receives a further bonus point (plus a knighthood from HM).
no one picks win, whoever picks a draw;
no one picks draw, whoever picks the upset win.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes; if they
are identical, bonus pts will be used. |
This year's comp is the 18th edition of the FA Cup tipping comp. Last season's comp was won by N-Bomb, who became the second player to retain his title. The first was srini701 in 2009 and 2010. With his win in 2016, N-Bomb became the second player to win this comp three times ... srini701 was the first to win this three times (2015). He's had three podium finishes in this comp, all gold. The draw for the First Round took place earlier this week on Monday night 21st October. There were 47 instead of 48 teams from L1 and L2 as Bury were expelled by the EFL from L1 and the FA then booted them out of the FA Cup. Chichester City from the Isthmian League received a bye. Two years ago the FA Cup comp had a field of 17 runners (down by one on the previous year's 18, nasty_liar being the no-show). Last year we had 14 runners at the gate when the starter fired his gun; all of us returned for another dose apart from three no shows: FussBudget, illiniman14 and toocool4u.
This year we again have 14 runners: we lost ElfTwinkle but we gained Llynfi. It's been many moons since we had a new starter. Welcome aboard!
Just one game was picked by everyone and we all hit pay dirt with Blackpool winning at home. Nobody picked the draw at Ipswich Town (ozzz2002 scored a bonus pt for picking Lincoln City to win).
Accrington Stanley (L1) lost at home to Crewe Alexandra (L2); PaulE jagged this upset and scored a bonus point. The second L1 v L2 upset saw MK Dons lose at home to Port Vale. PaulE picked this together with Llynfi. The third L1 v L2 upset loss at home was Bolton Wanderers v Plymouth Argyle. Llynfi picked this together with N-Bomb.
paper-aero was this round's winner but ends up in 2nd place behind PaulE, who scored those two bonus pts for those solo picks. The two wooden spooners, ozzz2002 and dg_dave, are equal 11th; as they both scored a bonus point to join Howie72 and gtho4 in a four-way tie.

A round of upsets saw nobody reach double digits .. four games were picked by nobody and another three were picked by one or two .. that's 7 of 16 down the gurgler.
There was just one home win and ten away! Fortuitously, default for this comp was changed this year .. from the away teams to the WS score.
dg_dave was best with 9/16. He jumped up six places from 11th to 5th.
PaulE and paper_aero, in 1st & 2nd place, were the only players who kept their spot from the previous round. The rest of us won 12 Academy Award nominations for serving up a perfect rendition of musical chairs.
The first four are separated by a single point. From there there's a gap of 2 pts to the next four runners, who are also separated by a single point. The remaining six at the rear of the field are separated by 4 pts.

There were fewer upsets in Round 2 than the previous round. Every game was picked by someone and seven players reached double digits.
PaulE has been pushed aside by George95 and LeoDaVinci. He falls off the podium form 1st to 4th. George95 is this round's winner with 12/16 and LeoDaVinci scored two bonus points for solo picks.
The first three are separated by just one point (it was the first four in the previous round). From there there's a gap of 3 pts to the next seven runners (that's half the field), who are separated by 3 pts. The remaining four are 4 pts adrift of the peloton.
The draw for the 3rd round has just been completed. The games will be played on Sat 4th Jan 2020.

It's as you for the first three, with LeoDavinci pushed down from equal first to third pace. They're still separated by a single point. The gap back to a pack of four remains at 3 pts .. they're also separated by a single point (it was 2 pts last round).
Juts one game out of 16 was a unanimous pick of 0-0-14 and all of us got it wrong. Rochdale, who are near the bottom of League One, earnt themselves a replay against Newcastle Utd (FAPL) when they equalised with 11 minutes to go.
Rochdale joined the Football League in 1921 and have played every season outside the top two tiers of English football; and have never won a title. They've been relegated three times to the bottom tier (1959, 1974 and 2012) and promoted three times (1969, 2010 and 2014).
Brighton & Hove Albion (FAPL) lost at home to Sheffield Wed- nesday (FLC) .. ozzz2002 earnt himself a bonus point for this outrageous pick. Cardiff City (FLC) were at home to Carlisle United, who are near the bottom of League Two. They were down 0-2 at half time and scored twice early in the second half .. wwe84 scored a bonus point for this flamboyant pick.
The other solo pick was by Llynfi, who consulted his Ouija board and saw an upset coming in the Reading v Blackpool game (FLC v L1) .. srini701 was the outlier: he picked an away win by Blackpool!
The Third Round will be completed on Monday night, when Arsenal host Leeds United. The draw for the Fourth Round will be held on Monday night before the last game.

Seven of the 16 games were unanimous picks .. six were a hit and we all missed the upset in Middlesbrough. We also missed the upset in Burton. Of the other 14 games, dg_dave picked all but two for a 12/16 win. In the previous round he collected a wooden spoon with 5/16.

In the previous round, Round 4, we had an average strike rate of precisely 50.0% .. 14 players lodged 16 picks = 224 picks, and 112 of them were correct. In this round, R5, we also had a strike rate of 50.0% precisely .. 13 players lodged 16 picks = 208 picks, and 104 of them were correct.
What are the odds of an average strike between us being 50.0% for two straight weeks? Who knows! But it's safe to say that it hasn't happened in any FT tipping comp, over the last 20 years (the first-ever comp was the NRL in 2000).
If those odds are astronomical, what are the odds of someone picking 15/16 in a soccer comp, where each game has three results (home, draw or away)? In the FAPL, where there are 10 games, there are 59,049 ways you can lodge 10 picks. In the FLC there are 531,441 ways you can lodge 12 picks .. 10/10 has been achieved 8 times in the FAPL comp and 7 times in the FT-PL comp. The odds of picking 10/10 are 59,049 to one.
In the FLC comp, no-one has achieved 12/12. The odds of picking that are 531,441 to one .. or half a million to one, rounded to the nearest 100k. Three players have gone close, with picks of 11/12 : srini701 in 2008-09, FussBudget in 2013-14 and N-Bomb in 2016-17. There are 24 ways of picking 11/12, which is odds of 22,143 to one.
In the FA Cup comp, there are 43,046,721 ways of picking 16 games. The odds of picking that one set of 16 correct picks are 43m to one, rounded to the nearest 100k (see post below for a summary of the odds in each of these three soccer comps).

ozzz2002 is this round's winner with picks of 15/16. He missed the full-time result Spurs v Norwich (Norwich equalised in the 76th minute). In other words, he came within 14 minutes of picking the holy grail 16/16 at odds of 43m to one!
There are 32 ways you can pick 15/16, which means the odds of picking 15/16 are 1.3m to one .. and four of his picks were solo picks! At the end of the previous round he was running 2nd last 2 points off the bottom and 13 pts behind the leader. With his 15 correct picks and *six* bonus points, he climbs all the way up the top. He's now our leader!
Behind him 2 pts in arrears is the peloton of ten players, separated by a mere 4 points .. the first five of those ten are separated by just one point.
LLynfi collected the wooden spoon with 5/16 and drops to 2nd last, which is where ozzz2002 was at the end of the previous round.
