World Cricket - 2019-20: November 14, 2019 to end-March 2020

This will be the 16th edition of World Cricket here at FT ...and my 13th running of the comp smile

Nobody has ever retained their title in the 15 years this comp has been run frown .... Howie72 totally dominated last season, and paper_aero has been second-placed 4 years in a row now. Can we finally have a new face in the second position please?

With the new World Test Championship starting, there will be more Tests this season than ODIs (we will have 2-3 ODI series of 3 matches along the way). We should see almost all Test playing countries in action (other than Afghanistan and Ireland).

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 (or more) for any ODI series, from the list of players I will provide, and score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about. The "super-sub" rule will continue to allow you to score for any player who you may pick but doesn't play...

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and as always there will be some rounds with 2 (or even 3) Tests in them.

10 people played the last seasons. Hoping to see people sustain their interest in the "most challenging" tipping competition here at FunTrivia grin

I think we should also have tipping for the Women's Internationals.

Women mostly play T20s. Our comp focuses only Tests and ODIs. Plus we pick players, and not teams in this comp...Not sure how many follow the game, or even if they do, if they'd like to take a punt on picking players for T20s smile

  • A warm welcome to the returning faithful to the "toughest tipping comp at FT" (yes, even over the dreadful A-League, Howie smile ). Special welcome to our newcomer Llynfi, who replaces ElfTwinkle in the lineup from last season.

  • Our season gets off to a slow start, with most of us scoring nothing through our trump players (that's some solace to Howie72, who didn't have a trump player due to late picks). Only gtho4 (Rahane), paper_aero (Ashwin) and to some extent N-Bomb (Jadeja) scored points from their trump players.

  • paper_aero is our first leader but wwe84 probably had the best team from the first round (except for the trump, of course).

Supersubs scoring this round: Mushfiqur scored for srini701 and Mominul scored for ozzz2002 in place of Al-Amin Hossain.

The next round starts this Thursday, Nov 21 and is a BIG round already...3 Tests coming up. Please don't wait till last day, as the Test in New Zealand starts pretty early for the rest of us around the world. Here's hoping Howie72 will stay on, post his picks, and try to defend his title...

  • Three Test matches starting around the same time made our very second round this season the biggest of the season! There are no other rounds where 3 Tests are starting around the same time...The Tests themselves weren't too great or interesting (even if it was India's first ever pink-ball Day-night Test). All the 3 visiting teams won the toss and batted first and all lost by an innings!

  • India finished off Bangladesh in less than 3 days. This was their 4th innings win in a row (a new record in history of Test cricket), 7th win a row in all (2 against West Indies, 3 against South Africa and now 2 against Bangladesh) and 12th win in a row at home. For just the very second time in their Test history not a single wicket fell to the spinners (a lot of us put faith on the Indian spinners here frown )....India's next Test assignment is in New Zealand in February 2020.

  • Speaking of the New Zealanders, their Test against England was probably the best of the 3 this week. None of the top 5 New Zealanders made a substantial score but they still had a double-centurion and a centurion as they piled on their highest Test score ever against England and kept the Englishmen for over 200 overs on the field. England had a decent first innings, but succumbed to the pressure of having to bat out the whole of the fifth day to save the Test. New Zealand keep demonstrating they aren't too dependent on one or two superstars. India-New Zealand in February should be a cracker of a series, but they also have a visit to Australia before that.

  • Which brings us to the Australians themselves. The Aussies started their home season in fine fashion, thumping Pakistan in four days. Pakistan strangely left out their best fast bowler (Mohammad Abbas) and though they did play better each day, it was never enough. David Warner turned into a beast again the minute he stepped out to bat on home soil, and the top 3 Australian batsmen all scored heavily.

  • The scoring this round was pretty complicated too for at least 3 of us here. gtho4 and ozzz2002 lodged picks late, but well before the India-Bangladesh Test started. So they scored the least scores from among the 7 who lodged correct teams for the first two Tests...that was 633 points scored by wwe84. Their teams for the India Test scored as they lodged. Our newcomer Llynfi probably did not get the rules or was confused by the number of Tests at the same time. He picked 5 batsmen in all for the New Zealand-England Test and his team for Pakistan-Australia too had just one bowler. After consultation with the Big Boss of the tipping comps, we let him score for the first 3 batsmen he named in order (2 Englishmen and 1 New Zealander) and let the least scoring 2 bowlers in the Test (Stuart Broad and Trent Boult) to join Llynfi's side. In the Pakistan-Australia Test Llynfi's supersub Naseem Shah automatically became his playing member and second bowler after his original player Abid Ali did not play. Hopefully we won't have too many complications in future smile

  • Howie72 is back in the lead as he bids to become the first person in 16 years to retain their title in this monstrous comp...Not all his trump players clicked, but he picked the rest of his players wisely enough to let him go top (for now wink ) Daaanieeel is right on his heels with a good round, but our first round leader and perennial silver-medallist paper_aero takes a tumble after taking a spoon....Ashwin as trump didn't help his matters either.

Supersubs scoring this round: People choosing Mohammad Abbas (srini, Howie and paper_aero) had supersubs scoring for them.

The next round involves the two Tests in the southern hemisphere from Friday, Nov 29. Please do NOT wait till last minute as the New Zealand game starts way too early for a FT deadline...Try and lodge picks before Thursday if you can...

  • David Warner did what the great Don couldn't do in his career! Hit a triple century at Adelaide...and what a triple it was...if Paine had not declared, Warner would probably have broken the world record 400 of Brian Lara...And Nathan Lyon did what he had never done in his career before against Pakistan....take a 5-wicket haul. Australia did more than enough to win in 4 days and seal the series 2-0 and Pakistan continue their miserable run Down Under (13 losses on the trot and counting).

  • In the other Test, Joe Root came back to form with a double century but he probably took up too much time and England finally didn't have any time to force a win. Williamson and Taylor hit centuries on the final day as the Test ended in a draw and New Zealand won the series 1-0.

  • ozzz2002 takes the round's honours while Daaanieeel takes the spoon after a couple of his players didn't play (including his supersub!). Other than our leader Howie72, whose lead has been trimmed a little, the rest of us played musical chairs this round.

Supersubs scoring this round: gtho4 had Joe Denly scoring him a few peanuts in place of De Grandhomme. Llynfi also had Joe Burns scoring a few peanuts in place of Michael Neser (and more badluck for Llynfi in the New Zealand England Test as 3 of his team didn't play at all, including the supersub). ozzz2002 had Tim Southee scoring for him as trump after his original trump did not play (and look at this guy...he picked Southee in his original pick AND also as his supersub...otherwise, his winning score could have been higher!). wwe84 was another who missed on some more points after his supersub Jack Leach aslo didn't get to play. Daaanieeel also missed out as mentioned before as he also picked Leach as his supersub. LeoDaVinci is left scratching his head after his pick Travis Head did play the Test, but didn't bat, bowl or even hold a catch (a "perfect Test" smile )

The next round sees two new series but 3 of the same teams in action. New Zealand start a 3-Test series in Australia, while Pakistan play Sri Lanka at home. The Tests start Wednesday, December 11 and I will post the round soon as all teams are announced.
