World Cricket - 2019-20: November 14, 2019 to end-March 2020

This will be the 16th edition of World Cricket here at FT ...and my 13th running of the comp smile

Nobody has ever retained their title in the 15 years this comp has been run frown .... Howie72 totally dominated last season, and paper_aero has been second-placed 4 years in a row now. Can we finally have a new face in the second position please?

With the new World Test Championship starting, there will be more Tests this season than ODIs (we will have 2-3 ODI series of 3 matches along the way). We should see almost all Test playing countries in action (other than Afghanistan and Ireland).

You will as usual pick 5 players for Test matches and 6 (or more) for any ODI series, from the list of players I will provide, and score as many points as the runs/wickets by your selected player. A carefully chosen Trump player can double your points and boost your scores considerably. If you are not a regular visitor to the forums here, you can still lodge a team at the beginning of a series and allow it to score for you till a new series comes about. The "super-sub" rule will continue to allow you to score for any player who you may pick but doesn't play...

Most threads won't be up till a few days before a match/series and as always there will be some rounds with 2 (or even 3) Tests in them.

10 people played the last seasons. Hoping to see people sustain their interest in the "most challenging" tipping competition here at FunTrivia grin

I think we should also have tipping for the Women's Internationals.

Women mostly play T20s. Our comp focuses only Tests and ODIs. Plus we pick players, and not teams in this comp...Not sure how many follow the game, or even if they do, if they'd like to take a punt on picking players for T20s smile

  • A warm welcome to the returning faithful to the "toughest tipping comp at FT" (yes, even over the dreadful A-League, Howie smile ). Special welcome to our newcomer Llynfi, who replaces ElfTwinkle in the lineup from last season.

  • Our season gets off to a slow start, with most of us scoring nothing through our trump players (that's some solace to Howie72, who didn't have a trump player due to late picks). Only gtho4 (Rahane), paper_aero (Ashwin) and to some extent N-Bomb (Jadeja) scored points from their trump players.

  • paper_aero is our first leader but wwe84 probably had the best team from the first round (except for the trump, of course).

Supersubs scoring this round: Mushfiqur scored for srini701 and Mominul scored for ozzz2002 in place of Al-Amin Hossain.

The next round starts this Thursday, Nov 21 and is a BIG round already...3 Tests coming up. Please don't wait till last day, as the Test in New Zealand starts pretty early for the rest of us around the world. Here's hoping Howie72 will stay on, post his picks, and try to defend his title...

  • Three Test matches starting around the same time made our very second round this season the biggest of the season! There are no other rounds where 3 Tests are starting around the same time...The Tests themselves weren't too great or interesting (even if it was India's first ever pink-ball Day-night Test). All the 3 visiting teams won the toss and batted first and all lost by an innings!

  • India finished off Bangladesh in less than 3 days. This was their 4th innings win in a row (a new record in history of Test cricket), 7th win a row in all (2 against West Indies, 3 against South Africa and now 2 against Bangladesh) and 12th win in a row at home. For just the very second time in their Test history not a single wicket fell to the spinners (a lot of us put faith on the Indian spinners here frown )....India's next Test assignment is in New Zealand in February 2020.

  • Speaking of the New Zealanders, their Test against England was probably the best of the 3 this week. None of the top 5 New Zealanders made a substantial score but they still had a double-centurion and a centurion as they piled on their highest Test score ever against England and kept the Englishmen for over 200 overs on the field. England had a decent first innings, but succumbed to the pressure of having to bat out the whole of the fifth day to save the Test. New Zealand keep demonstrating they aren't too dependent on one or two superstars. India-New Zealand in February should be a cracker of a series, but they also have a visit to Australia before that.

  • Which brings us to the Australians themselves. The Aussies started their home season in fine fashion, thumping Pakistan in four days. Pakistan strangely left out their best fast bowler (Mohammad Abbas) and though they did play better each day, it was never enough. David Warner turned into a beast again the minute he stepped out to bat on home soil, and the top 3 Australian batsmen all scored heavily.

  • The scoring this round was pretty complicated too for at least 3 of us here. gtho4 and ozzz2002 lodged picks late, but well before the India-Bangladesh Test started. So they scored the least scores from among the 7 who lodged correct teams for the first two Tests...that was 633 points scored by wwe84. Their teams for the India Test scored as they lodged. Our newcomer Llynfi probably did not get the rules or was confused by the number of Tests at the same time. He picked 5 batsmen in all for the New Zealand-England Test and his team for Pakistan-Australia too had just one bowler. After consultation with the Big Boss of the tipping comps, we let him score for the first 3 batsmen he named in order (2 Englishmen and 1 New Zealander) and let the least scoring 2 bowlers in the Test (Stuart Broad and Trent Boult) to join Llynfi's side. In the Pakistan-Australia Test Llynfi's supersub Naseem Shah automatically became his playing member and second bowler after his original player Abid Ali did not play. Hopefully we won't have too many complications in future smile

  • Howie72 is back in the lead as he bids to become the first person in 16 years to retain their title in this monstrous comp...Not all his trump players clicked, but he picked the rest of his players wisely enough to let him go top (for now wink ) Daaanieeel is right on his heels with a good round, but our first round leader and perennial silver-medallist paper_aero takes a tumble after taking a spoon....Ashwin as trump didn't help his matters either.

Supersubs scoring this round: People choosing Mohammad Abbas (srini, Howie and paper_aero) had supersubs scoring for them.

The next round involves the two Tests in the southern hemisphere from Friday, Nov 29. Please do NOT wait till last minute as the New Zealand game starts way too early for a FT deadline...Try and lodge picks before Thursday if you can...

  • David Warner did what the great Don couldn't do in his career! Hit a triple century at Adelaide...and what a triple it was...if Paine had not declared, Warner would probably have broken the world record 400 of Brian Lara...And Nathan Lyon did what he had never done in his career before against Pakistan....take a 5-wicket haul. Australia did more than enough to win in 4 days and seal the series 2-0 and Pakistan continue their miserable run Down Under (13 losses on the trot and counting).

  • In the other Test, Joe Root came back to form with a double century but he probably took up too much time and England finally didn't have any time to force a win. Williamson and Taylor hit centuries on the final day as the Test ended in a draw and New Zealand won the series 1-0.

  • ozzz2002 takes the round's honours while Daaanieeel takes the spoon after a couple of his players didn't play (including his supersub!). Other than our leader Howie72, whose lead has been trimmed a little, the rest of us played musical chairs this round.

Supersubs scoring this round: gtho4 had Joe Denly scoring him a few peanuts in place of De Grandhomme. Llynfi also had Joe Burns scoring a few peanuts in place of Michael Neser (and more badluck for Llynfi in the New Zealand England Test as 3 of his team didn't play at all, including the supersub). ozzz2002 had Tim Southee scoring for him as trump after his original trump did not play (and look at this guy...he picked Southee in his original pick AND also as his supersub...otherwise, his winning score could have been higher!). wwe84 was another who missed on some more points after his supersub Jack Leach aslo didn't get to play. Daaanieeel also missed out as mentioned before as he also picked Leach as his supersub. LeoDaVinci is left scratching his head after his pick Travis Head did play the Test, but didn't bat, bowl or even hold a catch (a "perfect Test" smile )

The next round sees two new series but 3 of the same teams in action. New Zealand start a 3-Test series in Australia, while Pakistan play Sri Lanka at home. The Tests start Wednesday, December 11 and I will post the round soon as all teams are announced.

  • The first home Test in Pakistan in more than 10 years (Pakistan was playing all "Home" Tests in the UAE since a bomb blast during a Sri Lanka Test in 2009), and guess who won? Rain played major a spoilsport and ensured not even the first innings would be completed. Sri Lanka themselves batted till the last morning and Pakistan had two centurions on the final day....which was also enough for the poor Pakistani spectators!

  • Australia continued their impressive home form, drubbing New Zealand by 296 runs in four days. For the very first time in his 71-Test career, Steve Smith went 3 Tests without a fifty! Mitchell Starc was all over the Kiwis (much to the joy of srini701) and Marnus Labushgance continued his imperious form with a 3rd ton in as many Tests (much to the delight of LeoDaVinci and wwe84).

  • gtho4 takes the round's honours while ozzz2002 follows his previous round medal with a spoon. paper_aero and N-Bomb slip a little, and it continues to be a very close-knit race as of now. Llynfi defaulted the round.

Supersubs scoring this round: Other than gtho4 and paper_aero, we all had supersubs scoring (or failing to score) for us! Those of us picking Yasir Shah had someone scoring a few points or none at all...Howie72 had Lahiru Kumasa as trump player in place of Yasir Shah; N-Bomb had Neil Wagner scoring instead of Trent Boult (his supersub Embuldeniya also did not play); srini701 had Angelo Mathews scoring as trump instead of Yasir, but he also had another player Fawad Alam who did not play; Daaanieeel missed out as well with his supersub Lakmal also not playing; LeoDaVinci had Kusal Mendis scoring for him; ozzz2002 had both his supersubs scoring....Dilruwan Perera and Tim Southeee (in place of Todd Astle); wwe84 had Vishwa Fernando as supersub, but that guy didn't score a single point though he played!

The next round is the second Test between Pakistan and Sri Lanka from Thursday, December 19, and hopefully we will all pick 5 players who will play smile

  • Pakistan won for the first time on home soil in more than 10 years after comprehensively beating Sri Lanka in the second Test. Naseem Shah became the second youngest ever in Test history to take a 5-wicket haul, while the top 4 of Pakistan all made centuries in the second innings...only the second time in history this was happening. A happy homecoming for the Pakistanis smile

  • N-Bomb squeezed gtho4 out for the round's honours, while ozzz2002 takes another spoon. Other than ozzz2002 who is now threatening to cut himself adrift to join the defaulting Llynfi at the rear, we are all pretty much bunched up. Don't be fooled by those numbers. It's just one player here and there for us all to start playing musical chairs smile

Supersubs scoring this round: paper_aero had the last laugh, with his supersub Abid Ali fetching him half his points in place of Lakshan Sandakan, while ozzz2002 wasn't so lucky with his supersub Rajitha also missing the Test along with his chosen Bhatti (who?). gtho4 also had Angelo Mathews scoring for him in place of Imran Khan.

The next round again involves a double-header in the Boxing Day Tests. England start a 4-Test series against South Africa, while Australia and New Zealand meet in their second Test. Do try and lodge your picks before the Toss in Melbourne on December 26.

  • South Africa broke a run of 5 consecutive losses with a well-deserved, hard fought win over an English side struck with illness. De Kock and debutant Van Dussen scored the runs, and the fast bowlers led by the retiring Philander, Rabada and newcomer Nortje ensured England never got away. It's a 4 Test series, and promises to be very close fought once the England team is all fit and fighting.

  • Australia completed a comprehensive win over New Zealand in the other Test. It was Travis Head doing the scoring this time and all bowlers other than Starc took wickets smile the poor run of Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor is continuing to hurt the Kiwis...are the Kiwis good only on their home soil? There's one more Test in this series to go...can the Kiwis redeem some pride at Sydney?

  • N-Bomb continues his climb up our ladder with a second consecutive winner's performance. He had some good picks in the South Africa-England Test and Neil Wagner made the difference for him. LeoDaVinci and Daaanieeel also had a wonderful round. Our leader and defending champion continues to make some shrewd picks to just about stay ahead even as the rest of us keep playing musical chairs behind him smile gtho4 takes the spoon despite having a very decent team, and is probably wondering why!

Supersubs scoring this round: We all had our teams scoring in the Australia-New Zealand Test, but ozzz2002 can thank his supersub Vernon Philander for lifting him above gtho4....Daaanieeel had Du Plessis scoring for him in place of Woakes.

The next round again involves these same teams in the New Year Tests from January 3, so if you choose NOT to make any picks, your teams will continue to score for you.

  • A severe flu bug ran through the already beleagured Kiwi side a day before the 3rd Test and half the side was out. For the first time since December 2009, New Zealand went into a Test without either Kane Williamson or Tim Southee or Trent Boult (can't even imagine that now, right). That knocked the stuffing out of their side, and out of our picks too...With the red hot Labuschagne continuing his merry run making spree (He scored 896 runs during the Australian summer, finishing with an average of 112 with four hundreds and three fifties) and with Nathan Lyon picking 10 wickets, Australia swept the Kiwis aside for a 3-0 margin. This is the eighth time in which Australia have won every Test in their home summer (at least five matches played). The last time this happened was in 2013-14.

  • England also broke a sequence of bad away Tests, winning on the fifth day (and there is talk of making Test cricket for 4 days shocked ) and drew their series level at 1-1 with 2 to play. Ben Stokes had a brilliant all round game while Dom Sibley scored a masterly hundred. James Anderson finished with a 5-wicket haul but is now ruled out of the rest of the series.

  • srini701 and Howie72 had identical trump picks as they nailed in the "in-form" guys and they finished with a bucketful of points. paper_aero's radar was somehow all over the place this round, and the Kiwi flu didn't help his cause either. Our 4-in-a-row silver medallist now faces an uphill task to make it 5 in a row.

Supersubs scoring this round: There ought to have been many as can be seen with the number of "DNP" (Did Not Play) in both the New Zealand and England side. But somehow some of us also had supersubs who also did not get to play. LeoDaVinci had his supersub doubling as his trump player too in the New Zealand Test.

The next round is a week away and is the 3rd Test between South Africa and England from January 16.

  • England bounced back into the series with a comprehensive innings win over a strangely listless South Africa. Ben Stokes and Ollie Pope pummeled them with centuries first before their "non-spinner" Dom Bess took 5 wickets and forced them to follow-on. Then another "non-spinner" Joe Root got four wickets and it was only a last wicket stand of 99 that made the margin look a little better than it is. I don't see this South African side putting up much resistance in the last Test either...

  • N-Bomb and srini701 went with identical teams, a rarity in our comp, and they ended up taking the round's honours...srini701 is slowly inching closer to Howie72 at the top...Five more rounds left in our season (maybe six/seven if we can squeeze in another series with no clashing dates)....LeoDaVinci was somehow most unlucky this round, especially with his trump pick of Jos Buttler, and he takes his first spoon of the season.

Supersubs scoring this round: Stuart Broad scored as trump for paper_aero in place of Jofra Archer, Dean Elgar scored some points for LeoDaVinci (Leo had 2 non-playing members) and Philander scored double points for ozzz2002 instead of Bairstow.

The next round is from Friday, January 24 and is the fourth Test of this same series...we then switch to a couple of 3-match ODI series starting on February 4 and 5...

  • England completed a comprehensive 3-1 sweep of their hosts South Africa, with Mark Wood breathing fire. This is the first time England won 3 Tests in a series in South Africa since...1913! It completes a miserable home summer for South Africa, which has lost two consecutive home series for the first time in 70 years! This is also the first time since 2004-05 that South Africa have lost three consecutive series. They lost to Sri Lanka at home (2-0), India away (3-0) and now England at home (3-1). Guess we can safely say Du Plessis has played his last Test series at home frown

  • Ironically, Mark Wood probably would not have played the Test had Jofra Archer not pulled up during the warm-ups on the morning of the Test...Wood went on to claim 9 wickets and also smashed 50 runs in the match (while at least 4 of us picking Archer in our sides here were left sighing). Ben Stokes completed a remarkable series, scoring over 300 runs, taking 10 plus wickets and holding 10 plus catches in the series...a feat only achieved by greats like Ian Botham and Garfield Sobers in the past!

  • N-Bomb completed another successful round for himself and with wwe84 taking his first spoon of the season, N-Bomb climbs past him on the ladder. With both his nearest competitors srini701 and Daaanieeel slipping this round, our leader Howie72 gets a breather as he looks set to break one of the more unique records here in our FT comps....well, there's still a few rounds to go for him though wink

Supersubs scoring this round: Many of us had supersubs to thank for their good scores this round...Howie72 had Stuart Broad scoring for Archer; paper_aero had Du Plessis instead of Archer; N-Bomb can thank Anriche Nortje for his winner's medal instead of Archer; Daaanieeel had Joe Root scoring for Archer (sadly, he also had Rabada missing in action); LeoDaVinci unfortunately had both Maharaj and his supersub Keegan Petersen out of action; gtho4 had De Kock scoring instead of Dom Bess and wwe84 had Van Der Dussen scoring in place of Maharaj.....Heck, only srini701 and ozzz2002 had a full complement of original 5 scoring for them this round shocked

The next round is a slight twist in the tale, as we bring in 2 3-match ODI series. South Africa-England and New Zealand-India start a small 3 match series each a day apart, from Tuesday, February 4....we will also cover the Australia-New Zealand ODI series later on....with a T20 World Cup later this year, most teams have turned their focus away from ODIs, so not many ODI series here this season to play spoilers here for us smile

15 years this comp has been run...NOBODY has ever *retained* their title the next year...Howie needs to hang on a few more rounds now...

  • This could have been a game changer round in many ways....we all scored a bucket load of points each but we also probably lost a lot of points because of a rained out match in the South Africa England series. The two teams shared a match each even as De Kock came good in both the completed matches. Meanwhile, New Zealand thrashed a listless India 3-0, completing India's first series whitewash in ODIs in 14 years. Guptill and Nicholls were in blazing form at the top for the Kiwis and Ross Taylor was too good in the first two matches. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer were good for India, but Virat Kohli was patchy and worse, Jasprit Bumrah was hammered in all 3 matches, going wicketless in an entire series for the very first time in his career!

  • N-Bomb is on fire...He picked up his 5th honours medal in 6 rounds and has crept dangerously close to Daaanieeel in 3rd spot...at the top, srini701 is breathing down Howie72's neck after chopping a further 117 points off his lead...Howie72 should be pretty nervous right now, with 5 rounds left in the season grin wwe84 had a really good set of players and it was his sheer bad luck that he chose Bumrah as his trump player. He thus takes his second spoon in a row.

Supersubs scoring this round: We had a full set of players in the South Africa England series....your supersubs come into play only if the selected player does NOT appear even in a single match....lot of us lost points that way: Shami played only 1 match, affecting srini, Leo and gtho4; Bumrah's bad form cost Howie, Leo, paper_aero and wwe84; Kane Williamson played only 1 match, affecting gtho4 (double too), Leo (again) and paper_aero. However, De Grandhomme and Virat Kohli scored for Howie and Leo in place of Scott Kuggeleijn, whileMartin Guptill scored for paper_aero in place of Rohit Sharma.

5 rounds remain....2 Tests between India and New Zealand, another set of 3 ODIs each between India-South Africa and Australia-New Zealand, followed by 2 Tests between Sri Lanka and England.

The next round starts Friday, February 21 with the first Test between New Zealand and India. Will post the round soon as New Zealand name their squad.

  • Windy Wellington and a lost toss proved too much for India as they came crashing down to earth in four days (New Zealand last lost a match at home after losing the toss in 2009!). Tim Southee picked up 9 wickets and was superbly supported by Trent Boult and the debutant Kylie Jamieson even as Kane Williamson played a captain's knock. Other than Ishant Sharma's bowling and a bit of Mayank Agarwal's batting, India had nothing to write about.

  • gtho4's pick of Tim Southee paid off as he takes the honour's medal for this round...unfortunately these rounds with single Tests don't get us too many points so he didn't see any movement up...srini701 narrowed the lead of Howie72 a little bit more, while N-Bomb moved closer to Daaanieeel who takes this round's spoon.

Supersubs scoring this round: LeoDaVinci was a happy guy after his supersub Trent Boult scored him a lot of points in place of Ravindra Jadeja, but poor Daaanieeel had his supersub also sitting out, as did wwe84 (both picked Jadeja and Wagner respectively and had these same guys as their respective supersubs!). ozzz2002 also had a lot of points through Ishant Sharma in place of Todd Astle.

4 rounds remain....1 Test between India and New Zealand, another set of 3 ODIs each between India-South Africa and Australia-New Zealand, followed by 2 Tests between Sri Lanka and England.

The next round starts Saturday, February 29 with the second Test between New Zealand and India. If you don't want to change your team, you need not lodge a pick...

  • I was depressed after Howie72 gleefully pounced on me questioning the Indian team's ability to even play cricket, so I didn't post these results so far grin The Indians had their moments but were still thoroughly outplayed in the series, and will return a much chastised side, I am sure. Virat Kohli endured the second worst series of his career across all formats, and Jasprit Bumrah his worst. The highest score for India in the whole series was 58 and that tells a story in itself. It didn't help that Ishant Sharma wasn't available for the second Test, or that the team didn't even select the one man in form, KL Rahul for the Test series, but that takes nothing away from the New Zealanders, who played astutely in the conditions that suited them best....Kylie Jamieson had a great debut series (but I honestly don't see this guy performing extraordinarily anywhere else in the world) and Tim Southee and Trent Boult were magnificent as ever. New Zealand won both the Tosses and so won both the Tests....just an FYI, Virat Kohli has NEVER lost a Test, home or away, when he won the toss...

  • paper_aero takes the round's honours and ozzz2002 the spoon. Howie72 and srini701 managed the same score with different players, so no change in the lead. N-Bomb edges closer to Daaanieeel for the podium position and the next round will probably be the most crucial for these 4 guys.

Supersubs scoring this round: ozzz2002 had Jadeja scoring for him instead of Ishant Sharma, wwe84 had Mayank Agarwal scoring nothing for him instead of Ishant, while poor gtho4 was unlucky as his sub also didn't get to play....gtho4 still managed to avoid the spoon!

3 rounds remain....3 ODIs each between India-South Africa and Australia-New Zealand, followed by 2 Tests between Sri Lanka and England.

The next round starts Thursday March 12 and includes two different ODI series... India welcomes South Africa, which has just thrashed Australia at home, while Australia return home and play the Kiwis....let's see what Mr. Jamieson can do in Australia, Howie wink

Our season has ended as abruptly as the cricket around the world...The last published round was the end of the season....

Congratulations to Howie72, who becomes the first person EVER to defend their title in this comp in all these years smile srini701 and Daaanieeel complete the podium for 2019-2020.

paper_aero ends a run of 4 consecutive silver medals in the comp.

Things will turn for the better soon, and it will be business as usual in all spheres of life, and we shall resume our next tipping comp in IPL cricket, as and when it starts (tentatively set for April 15)...till then, take care of yourselves and your loved ones, and stay safe everybody smile
