Jessica & Holly

Please spare a moment to write a few words in memory of these two harmless children

There are no words that can describe the horror of what has occurred here. In my heart I hope that they didn't suffer too much at the hands of these totally evil objects of hatred.

In the words of Chris Rea:

Tell me there's a heaven
Tell me that it's true
Tell me there's a reason
Why I'm seeing what I do.
Tell me there's a heaven
Where all those children go
Tell me that they're happy now
Papa tell me that it's so.

RIP Jessica and Holly....A nation mourns for you.

While I totally agree that what has happened is awful beyond comprehension, I would just say that no one has been convicted yet. There is no one to hold responsible. Our justice system is, quite rightly, and despite the attitude of some newspapers, innocent until proven guilty (in fact I worry, given the attitudes of some of our press over here, that the current coverage messes up the concept of an impartial jury).

It is a matter of waiting and hoping the right people will be brought to justice in time. I hope the system will convict those who are actually guilty and not just those who are the easiest to accuse...

In the meantime however, of course all thoughts and prayers go out to the girl's family and friends... this is a dreadful thing to have happened and we all hope that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

There is no explanation for some of the horrid things which happen in this life. Two little girls.....little girls, with lives ahead of them, taken from their loving families and killed.

I agree, Flapjack, as I hear on this side of the pond, that charges haven't been laid yet, and indeed, as of this morning, positive ID hadn't been made of the bodies. But still, in my mind (my emotional mind, not my technical mind) it's all falling together.

I am saddened and offer my strength and gentlest thoughts to those who loved and knew these little girls.

Death of children is perhaps the worst tragedy in the world, and especially what appears to have happened here. However this is, in this country, a thankfully incredibly rare occurrence. Unfortunately most abuse and violence against children happens in families. Hundreds more children are murdered by cars than by maniacs. In the wide world outside the narrow view of the British press the world's biggest killer is dirty water. 9 million people die every year because of that - many of them children. We could save a lot of children's lives if we wanted to but, if we spend all our time obssessing about rare events we cannot do anything about, we will continue to fail millions for whom not even a book of condolence exists. The best way to remember Jessica and Holly is to persuade our media, who effectively run the world, to start helping the millions we can save instead of almost totally ignoring them.

Kevin Wells read the following poem, which he wrote himself, during the memorial service for his daughter Holly and her friend Jessica Chapman at Ely Cathedral.
In reply to:

SOHAM'S ROSE

Your right to grow, to mature and to play
So cruelly denied in a sinister way
Attentive and caring, a parent's delight
But so young at heart, needing comfort at night
The garden is quiet, the house is too
But, pausing for a moment, we can still sense you
Your trusting nature and desire to please all
Allow us, your family, to remain walking tall
Our memories now shared with the nation's hearts
Small crumbs of comfort - now it is time to part
We will never forget you
Heaven's gain, as it knows
Is simply you, Holly, our beautiful Soham rose

That brings a tear to the eye. I think those parents have been through every normal parent's worse nightmare, to have one's child die at the hand of a deviant not knowing what they suffered. To lose a child is a nightmare when it is by natural causes, this goes far beyond what we can possibly imagine. My heart goes out to them.

Jesus said 'Suffer little chidren to come unto me' and in the case of these two little girls I hope that's where they are. But, at the same time , I take your point and totally agree with your statement about Children of the World. They are our future and we should try to help in every way possible. The plight of chidren is caused by adults, whether it be these two little girls or children of the world. What is the solution? I wish I had it. Children are vulnerable and rely on adults for protection. Sometimes this is not forthcoming. I wish I could change the world.

I don't often say it out loud, but some folks, I know that they're in heaven. I don't even question it.
As I was in Cambridgeshire and then the UK during the search just out of pure coincidence and I went through what most of you did, watching the constant signs of hope and then despair...for me, the only consolation one can have is that they are indeed in heaven and, for me...that only the notion of karma helps me for their abusers.
