Indian Domestic Cricket: Ranji Trophy 2019-20 - 9 December to 12 February

This will be the 5th edition of the FT comp of the premier domestic cricket tournament of India. paper_aero starts as defending champion, and he's been on the podium on all 4 previous years as well (2 gold 2 silver). We simply pick the teams we think will win, and score as many points as they do in their matches, which is as follows:

Win outright- 6 points
Bonus point (for innings or 10 wicket wins)- 1 point
1st innings lead in a drawn match - 3 points
No result- 1 point
1st innings deficit in a drawn match- 1 point
Lost Outright - 0 points

~ 28 top teams divided into 3 groups.
~ We only pick one of the 2 teams in each round....and score as many points as the teams we pick score (for win or draw)
~ 9 rounds of league matches (12 matches each round).
~ Grace period of 1 hour for all rounds from this year.

Vidarbha start as 2-time defending champions, after beating Saurashtra in last year's finals. Kerala and Karnataka were the losing semifinalists last year.

Please sign in here if you are interested. 11 people took part in the inaugural comp, 10 over the next two years and last year there were 9 runners....hoping more people will join in....

If it's a team pick type thing, I'll play. I just won't understand scoring though lol (not talking about the comp scoring either).

Welcome back smile You missed the first day of round 1....you can either start with spoon score, or miss scores of first 3 matches and score from the remaining 9, as you wish...Hope you will join from round 2 ...

Whichever will give me more points for round one will be ideal. I'll be sure to post for round 2.

Only 8 of us lined up at the start for the 5th edition of the FT Comp on Ranji Trophy, the premier domestic cricket competition of India....this is the lowest turn out even in this comp frown ....defending champion paper_aero has been on the podium in every edition so far....can he make it 5 in a row? He starts off on a good foot, taking the early lead, though we are all pretty much bunched up, except for ozzz2002.

There were 8 outright results in the opening round, including a very thrilling win for Karnataka over Tamil Nadu in the very last over of the match on the fourth day. Saurashtra struggled but won over Himachal Pradesh, eternal favourites Mumbai thrashed Baroda, Hyderabad succumbed on the last day to Gujarat, Odisha put in a surprisingly strong show to beat Chattisgarh while Punjab and Haryana also had it rather easy in their opening matches. Defending champions Vidarbha were held back by some resilient batting on the last day by the Andhra batsmen.

The next round starts Tuesday, December 17.

We welcome Llynfi to the competition, and welcome back dg_dave...making it 10 runners again...LeoDaVinci defaulted the round (let's hope he won't regret the decision in the final round). gtho4 had a near perfect round, missing just one match out of the 12, and he jumps into the lead...ozzz2002 is probably still looking at the Indian map trying to figure out where these teams are, and ends up with a second spoon. wwe84 also landed a spoon with a different set of picks.

It was a crazy round, with almost every match producing an outright result! There were some predictable results (wins for Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Saurashtra) and some shocks, with Andhra beating Delhi outright and Himachal Pradesh surprising Tamil Nadu (though Tamil Nadu was missing many key players). Baroda and Madhya Pradesh played out an edge of the seat thriller, while Haryana and Odisha continue to make merry in the relatively weaker Group C.

The next round starts on Christmas Day.

Bad weather (extreme cold and rain) affected a lot of matches this round and 7 of the 12 matches ended in draws. We had some bold picks for every game and maybe some of us can feel bad about not getting more points smile There were some great results too, none greater than the massive upset of Mumbai at the hands of Railways and Saurashtra losing to Uttar Pradesh by an innings! Hyderabad and Tripura continue to lose badly this year.

dg_dave takes the round's honours and moves up a little. paper_aero is one of the 3 spooners, and he slides down a spot, ceding ground to Howie72.

The next round starts on January 3 (IST). Please don't wait till last minute to post your picks.

Rain continued to intervene, but there were still 7 outright results possible this round. Mumbai lost again, this time to Karnataka, in the "marquee" match of the round, prompting a hue and cry in the Mumbai cricket circles (they were after all the Indian "Giants" of cricket for many many years). Hyderabad got their first win of the season beating Kerala, while Andhra won on the road against Rajasthan. Maharashtra continue to slide down, being bowled out for 44 on the opening day and losing by an innings against the Services team. Jammu & Kashmir pulled off the upset of the round, winning by an innings against a relatively stronger Jharkhand side.

George95 takes the round's honours here after we were all over the place with our picks...surprisingly, only 1 match (Uttar Pradesh) had a unanimous pick (and they were lucky rain saved them against Tamil Nadu). Howie72 takes the spoon and allows paper_aero back into second. In the meanwhile, gtho4 has silently doubled his lead at the top in a single round.

The next round starts on January 11 (IST). Please don't wait till last minute to post your picks.

There were no rain or bad weather interruptions, and most of the matches amongst the "big" teams in Groups A and B predictably played out to hard-fought draws. Kerala scored their first win in a thriller of a low-scoring game to beat Punjab. This allowed Andhra to top the table after their comfortable innings win over a struggling Hyderabad. Vidarbha won too, beating a strong Bengal side. Note that the top 5 teams in both group A and B together make it to quarterfinals (2 teams from Group C and 1 from Plate group complete the quarterfinal setup).

In Group C, Haryana and Odisha played out a thriller, while Jammu Kashmir won again...it's going to be a very fascinating second half of the season in all 3 groups as the race for the last 8 berths hots up.

wwe84 returned from a week's hiatus and scores his first win of the season...Llynfi takes his first spoon of the comp and drops down. Nobody's running away with this comp this season, and it promises to be a fight to the finish.

Another very interesting round, that saw some really close matches as the race for qualification for the knock-outs heats up. Bengal thrashed Hyderabad by an innings to boost their chances of a top 5 finish. This was Hyderabad's 5th loss in 6 matches and they are probably staring at relegation to Group C next season (bottom 2 teams in Groups A and B together drop down to Group C). Kerala is another team that's probably looking at relegation after a horrible batting display saw them lose inside two days to Rajasthan, at home...Delhi pulled off a thrilling run chase on the final day to upset defending champions Vidarbha, while Punjab were beaten by Gujarat in a close match...both Vidarbha and Punjab's chances take a hit but they are both still very much in the mix for a top 5 finish. Tamil Nadu moved off the bottom rungs with a comprehensive win over Railways, while Saurashtra had to be content with just 3 points after Madhya Pradesh held on gamely to draw their match.

In Group C the top 2 teams move to the knock-outs and in a top of the table clash, Jammu Kashmir got the better of Odisha to take the lead. Haryana and Assam could have closed the gap to the top two but both of them lost...it will probably be Odisha and Jammu Kashmir from this group, though 3 rounds still remain.

paper_aero plowed his way back with another great round....the lead for gtho4 at the top, which was 24 points 2 rounds back, is now down to a mere 5 points...Howie72 is breathing down their necks and it promises to be a tight race to the finish line. George95 is probably the dark horse at this point for gatecrashing their party. srini701 limped his way to a second spoon after most of his picks bombed in his face...

The next round of matches starts on Monday, January 27 10 am (IST). Please don't wait till last minute to post your picks.

This season's Ranji Trophy is turning out to be a scenario builder's nightmare. It was already complicated enough having to track two groups on one points table, and to add to that, the teams have competed so well against each other, there is barely anything separating them. Rain played spoilsport in a couple of key games as well to make it even more complex. Andhra are still on top, with 27 points, followed by Gujarat (26 points), Saurashtra (25 points), Karnataka (24 points), and Bengal (20 points). Each of the top five have two games in hand, which means this table could look very different when the league stage is over. Kerala, Hyderabad and Madhya Pradesh are probably the 3 teams fighting to stave off "relegation" to the lower Group C.

Howie72 exploded this round, picking the lot bar one (Chattisgarh-JK match) and he suddenly finds himself top of the table with paper_aero. gtho4 is a mere point behind and the last 2 rounds here should be a thriller between these 3. LeoDaVinci also had a fantastic round, getting 10/12 right, while George95 will probably hoping for two such rounds now to gatecrash the top 3's party.

The next round of matches starts on Tuesday, February 4 10 am (IST).

Inclement weather ensured some teams didn't get a full chance to press for the precious points they needed to stay in the race for qualification for the knock outs. Defending Champions Vidarbha are out of the reckoning, and so are 41 times champions Mumbai and the other "Big Guns" Delhi. Gujarat and Saurashtra have confirmed their places in the top 5, and Andhra should most probably get there too. Bengal, Punjab, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh are all still in the running for the remaining berths from the top 2 groups. In Group C, Jammu Kashmir should probably take one of the 2 berths, while Odisha, Services and Haryana will fight it out for the other place.

Odisha stumbled against Maharashtra the last round. Andhra lost to Punjab in a very close fought 2-day thriller, while Bengal won another close fought thriller against Rajasthan despite conceding a huge first innings lead. Bad weather ensured Vidarbha didn't get a chance to take their case for qualification to the last round, where they play a "set to be relegated" Hyderabad.

Howie72 turned this comp around on its head in the last two rounds, and is now in the lead going into the final round....gtho4 who seemed to be cruising to a win two rounds back, now has some work to do in the final round....srini701 won his first honours medal for the season but has left it too late for it to count. George95 defaulted the round and so our podium for this season is decided...

The final round of matches start on Wednesday, February 12 10 am (IST).

The last round of matches focused on who would be the 8 quarterfinalists for this year. 3 teams from the Elite A and B (Gujarat, Saurashtra and Andra) had already made it and Jammu Kashmir from Group C had made it. The Bengal-Punjab match was a direct shootout as the winner would make it. In the end, Bengal won a low scoring thriller and Punjab, despite being on top of the standings after round 4, failed to make it. Karnataka took the other berth from the elite groups after thrashing Baroda. Most of the other matches ended in draws and there were to be no morale boosting wins for Mumbai or Delhi.

The quarterfinal line up thus is: Gujarat vs Goa (plate group winner); Bengal vs Odisha (group C runner-up); Karnataka vs Jammu-Kashmir and Saurashtra vs Andhra.

Howie72 became the 3rd person to win this comp in its 5 year history. He went into the lead only in round 7 and held off paper_aero by a narrow margin till the end....gtho4, who seemingly had this comp in the bag at round 6, faded away in the last tow rounds and has to settle for the bronze medal. George95 and LeoDaVinci could have been contenders had they not defaulted a round each. wwe84 got into action only towards the end, and he finishes with the last round's honours. Congrats to the 3 medallists and thank you all to all others for joining me in this comp smile

The next cricket comp would be the IPL which we resume after a break in the World Cup year (2019)...It starts somewhere towards the end of March....hoping to see you all back then....
