Australian Open 2020

A new decade starts, and this will SURELY be the DECADE (if not the year) when the "old guard" will finally make way to the next gen....question is, will we see it at the start of 2020 or do we have to wait some more time? Melbourne will provide some answers over the next two weeks, beginning Monday, January 20 when the Australian Open kicks off.

Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka will be defending their titles on the courts, while Dizart and toocool4u start in the hot seat here in our comp. Will we finally see ozzz2002 solve the puzzle of his home slam? Sign up here if you are interested in knowing how well we know our tennis.

  • How many of us even thought of Sofia Kenin when we were making our picks crazy One more Grand Slam and one more new champion...the women's game continues to throw up a new champion every slam and the first Grand Slam of the new decade added to the list...21-year old Sofia Kenin, who entered the Australian Open with odds of 35 to 1, and who had never been past the 4th round of any slam before (best of 2nd round in Australian Open) beat Garbine Muguruza in a match of two totally unexpected finalists....Muguruza herself was coming off a very bad 2019, and had been unseeded for the first time in a slam since 2014...she thus became the first unseeded woman to reach the finals of the Australian Open since Justin Henin in 2010!
  • And what of all the "favourites"? World No.1 Ashleigh Barty marched to the semis before she was ousted by Kenin. World no. 4 Simona Halep made it to the semis too, while No.7 Petra Kvitova reached the quarterfinals, but all other big names, including Serena Williams, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Angelique Kerber all fell before round 4. We had Ons Jabeur from Tunisia become the first African woman ever to reach the last eight of a slam, while Anastasia Pavyluchenkova made it to the last 8 for a second year in a row...
  • We had our poorest slam ever in terms of our scoring. ozzz2002 is laughing his way to the title after picking Garbine Muguruza to reach the quarters! His score of 39 (out of a possible 290) represents, at 13.4%, one of our worst-ever showing in a slam for a winning score!
  • Dizart and debutant Llynfi tied on score and picks and had a tiebreak of +2 and -2 respectively, so I decided to let them share the silver medal and not award a bronze medal this year.
  • A bunch of us tied on 16 points and tiebreak was required to separate most of them. Where even the tie-break was same, I just placed them alphabetically! toocool4u has started his new decade with a golden duck!
  • Congratulations then to ozzz2002, for winning the first Gold medal of the new decade smile smile and to Dizart and Llynfi for finishing on the podium!

  • There's still a sense of security and continuity about the men's game unlike the unpredictable women smile...the "Big 3" and a bunch of other consistent performers ensure the men's game is still "predictable" and "boring" smile...and so the "King of AUSTRALIA" proved it yet again, with his 8th triumph in Melbourne....Novak Djokovic wins his 17th Grand Slam title and is now 2 shy of Nadal and 3 short of Federer....any one thinks he can get to those numbers in 2020 itself?
  • It isn't as if the "next-gen" is nowhere in the picture. Dominic Thiem took out Rafael Nadal on his way to his 3rd slam finals (he lost twice at Roland Garros to Nadal), while Alexander Zverev beat Stan Wawrinka in the quarters. Thiem fought tooth and nail in a high-quality five setter in the finals before Djokovic asserted his supremacy.
  • Of the rest, Tennys Sandgren reached the quarterfinals for the 2nd time in 3 years (and none of us even thought of him here), while Milos Raonic proved he's back, with a run to the quarters.
  • After a golden duck in the women's section, toocool4u bounced back in real style to successfully defend his title from last year....he becomes the FIRST person EVER to defend the men's title in the Australian Open (srini701 won 3 back to back titles in the women's section)....toocool4u's pick of Milos Raonic proved to be the game changer.
  • Dizart made it 2 silver medals in a row with a fantastic set of picks. He had the most number of correct picks (11/15) and richly deserved his second place. Howie72 takes the bronze after picking Wawrinka in his side along with Djokovic's title win.
  • In an interesting twist to our comp, women's winner ozzz2002 follows up with a spoon now, much like toocool4u...how strange is that!
  • Congratulations then to our podium with special mention to toocool4u, and looking forward to the next slam then...

It's even on a countback, so it would be a deadheat for the silver.
