Anytime I hear any Beatles song, I change the channel! The only one of their songs I'll even remotely listen to is Let It Be.

The Disneyland category is #2565.

And while we're on my favorite topic, Coasters and Theme Parks (#233) would fit June 26 - the Coney Island Cyclone opened on that date in 1927.

At the moment, we are not evaluating whether suggestions are "better" than the current allocations, just gathering in new ideas from the FT community. Then the game of trying to replace appropriately will come into play. At the moment, Coasters and Theme Parks is on 16 August, which is officially (somewhere, according to someone) Roller Coaster Day. It could certainly be moved to another date, if a suitable replacement for 16 August came into play. June 26, however, is also the anniversary of the UK release of the first Harry Potter book.

Uhm...wasn't Reagan first elected 40 years ago? And his birthday was over 100 years ago. By your logic he's just not that important.

Besides, Feb 6 is Babe Ruth's birthday and an argument can be made that Babe Ruth was more important to a lot of people than Ronald Reagan. (After all, when told that he was asking for a salary increase and was told that was more than the president was making, he replied that he had a better year than the president.)

Babe Ruth is category 9607.

Babe Ruth is currently featured on 11 July, the anniversary of his major league debut. Could, of course, move to his birthday, but it's also sort of nice to use a variety of milestones for people, not just birth and death. It adds to the trivia component of the activity. (My opinion, not necessarily shared by everyone.)

Imagine... I bet that one will last for a while. And really, if you want to delete Lennon but include Marty Stouffer, you need to check the calibration on your scales of who's famous and who isn't. I even looked Stouffer up and I've still never heard of him. His programmes weren't shown outside North America so "Wild America fame" is not fame on much of a scale. John Lennon was, and remains, known globally. Maybe that won't be true 100 years from now but who knows what the FT topic of the day will be in 2120? smilee

Exactly this...in 50 or 100 years, we won't be around to tell the people what they should deem important.

The Beatles might be the most important band in the world 100 years from now. Who is to say what will happen.

To each his own.

Variety is what makes the world go around.

June 26 is World Refrigeration Day (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Refrigeration_Day) so you could use

We could probably use Ice Cream a dozen times - it is currently used on June 7 for National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, which I assume is an American "day". I like the lateral thinking of the changed date. So now that's two suggestions to replace poor old Harry Potter.

June 12 (1967) was the US Supreme Court ruling on Loving v Virginia which struck down all laws banning interracial marriage.

This was the basis of the June 26 (2015) US Supreme Court decision that laws restricting same sex marriage were also unconstitutional.

History--not sure what the category is for tolerance.

Thanks for the opportunity to give input.

Could Harry Potter move to July 31st? It's his "birthday".

As long as I remember to read the blurb of the day first, I like it when a person is featured on their birthday. There is usually at least one question in the Duel asking "When was Famous Person born?"

You aren't following my logic if that's what you think. Musicians aren't important, major political figures are. Reagan will still be relevant 100 years from now, Lennon isn't even relevant now.

As for Marty Stauffer, my goal was recognition of Wild America as a significant nature program, not of Stauffer in particular, but I couldn't find the inaugural start date for the show, so I substituted Stauffer's birthday. For those unfamiliar with it, it was the first major TV program focused specifically on US wildlife and was one of PBS's most popular programs ever, running for 12 years. Stauffer himself was a "Grizzly Adams" kind of character, even raising a bear like Adams did.

I have no objection to a "Babe Ruth" day, but considering Reagan brought down the evil empire and freed approximately 500 million people from the bondage of communism, I don't think Babe Ruth was "more important" than Reagan.

As this is a site devoted to trivia, the relative importance of the people chosen for the Topic of the Day is hardly going to change the world or anyone's beliefs. I enjoy the quirkiness of some of the choices, particularly when I learn about a day devoted to something I've never heard of.

This thread is for players to make suggestions to add some variety to the game now it's been running for a while, not to criticise other people's choices.

Right now, I'd welcome as much frivolity as is available.

On April 6th in 1320, the Scottish Declaration of Independence was signed. (category 21172 = Scottish History)

National Beer Day (U.S.) is April 7th. On March 22, 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, signed into law, the Cullen-Harrison Act. This act, repealed prohibition for beer. Effective April 7, 1933, people could once more buy, sell and consume beer. (category 5490 = Beers)

Save the Elephants Day is April 16th. It was founded in 2012. It was created by the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation of Thailand, working in conjunction with Canadian film maker Patricia Sims. Is that a standing offer? smile

I would like to add my voice to say that this should be treated as brainstorming, and that means not criticizing other people's suggestions.

I would also like to see this done on other threads.
