Just returned from a mini-vacation in Canuquistan... communed with friends in TO, and in Ottawa. The Canajuns seem to have taken down the fairly ugly city of Trawna I saw in 1979, and replaced it with Washington DC's Georgetown... quite impressed with the place. Drove on Yonge for miles and miles, well north of the city as well, and didn't see a speck of garbage. Even Ottawa acquitted itself fairly well, though its neighbour, Hull, just across the Quebec border, looked decidedly the worse for wear.
The down side of all this, and some Americans here may be as offended by my saying so as Canadians might be, is that those legendary Tim Horton do(ugh)nuts, which I sampled for the first time, proved to be decidedly pedestrian AT BEST. I am told by Canadian friends (many of whom agreed with me vehemently about this) that the chain switched its practices a little while back... that they apparently went to frozen dough or some such, with a corresponding fall-off in quality.
Also had poutine for the first time in my life... not bad at all, knocked off the full plate in mere minutes. All of this in at least some ways traces back to this site, through which, in late 2002, I first began to (cyber)meet people from all over the British Commonwealth, with many of whom I am still in frequent and pleasant contact.
