It's been a busy week for me, between a Tuesday game to taking my wife to see our new baby nephew, to getting things done at home, I've been AFK most of the week.
We had a couple of games that didn't go well, one that got moved to next week, and then four games picked by the lot, with a further two missed by only one or two.
With that, we shall go...
On to the games:
In Chicago, Tom Brady came to town with a 5-0 record against Chicago. His counterpart, Nick Foles, defeated him as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles a couple of years ago. Who would come out on top in this one? In the line of offense, it was Brady over Foles, 253 to 243. As for the game itself...read on. Tampa looked hot early on, scoring on a Ryan Succop field goal and a Brady pass to Mike Evans. The Bucs led 10-0 after one. They would extend the lead to 13, but in the final two minutes, Chicago made it interesting, scoring twice to take a 14-13 lead into the break. In the third, Succop would get the only score, giving the Bucs back the lead at 16-14. In the fourth, Cairo Santos answered that field goal with one of his own, then the two canceled one another out with one. With 1:13 remaining, Brady was trailing by one. Brady started down the field, first hitting Evans with a 12 yard shot, then missing the next. He would get another pass off to Ke'Shawn Vaughn, then his favorite receiver in New England, Gronk, missed the pass, setting up fourth down from the Tampa 41. Brady couldn't get it into the hands of Cameron Brate, and Nick Foles held off Brady once again, this time 20-19. Chicago gave up nearly 100 more yards than they gained, but what matters is the score, not the offensive numbers.
In Atlanta, momentum shifted quite frequently in this game. Atlanta got things started with a touchdown from Todd Gurley to take a 7-0 lead. Joey Slye kept the Panthers from getting shutout in the first with a field goal, but the Panthers trailed 7-3. In the second, Teddy Bridgewater woke up after Slye hit his second field goal, by getting two touchdown passes off, giving the Panthers a 20-7 lead at the break. In the third, Younghoe Koo hit a field goal, then another early in the fourth to get the Falcons to 20-13. Late in the fourth, the two kickers each hit another field goal, and the Panthers held on to defeat the Falcons, 23-16.
In Baltimore, this game was almost all Baltimore, as the Bengals were held scoreless most of the way. Justin Tucker got things started with a field goal, then Lamar Jackson threw a score to give the Ravens a 10-0 lead after one. On the first play of the second, Jackson got another score to give the Ravens a 17-0 lead. Both offenses were quiet after that, as the score at the break was 17-0. In the third, Tucker hit another field goal, giving the Ravens a 20-0 lead through three. In the fourth, the Raven defense got involved on a fumble for six. In garbage time, Randy Bullock kept the Bengals from getting completely shut out, hitting a field goal with :37 left, and the Ravens feasted in this one, 27-3.
In Houston, things started off reasonable, then turned one sided. The Texans got on the board first with a Ka'imi Fairbairn field goal, but the Jaguars answered with a touchdown, staking them to a 7-3 lead. Houston responded with a touchdown before the end of the quarter to hold a 10-7 lead at the half. In the third, Houston extended the lead on another field goal, but in the fourth, Houston got another touchdown before Jacksonville could respond. It was Houston the rest of the way, as they defeat the Jaguars 30-10.
In Kansas City, defenses were sleeping, as both teams gained over 400 yards on the day. The Raiders got first blood by hitting a field goal, but Patrick Mahomes answered with a touchdown run to hold a 7-3 lead after one. In the second, Tyreek Hill extended the lead to 14-3, then the teams started trading scores until Derek Carr got the Raiders a second straight score to give the Raiders a 24-21 lead. Harrison Butker got the Chiefs even at the half with a field goal, knotting the game at 24 at the break. In the fourth, as the third was quiet, the Raiders surprised everyone by going on a 16-0 run to take a 40-24 lead (Daniel Carlson missed the first PAT). Mahomes would not be denied, as he threw a touchdown pass and 2pt to get within 8 with four left to play. Would the Chiefs get the ball one more time? Derek Carr was going to keep it for himself, as at the two minute warning, looking at a fourth down play, he took a keeper and was able to get just enough for a first down to kneel the ball the rest of the way, and the Raiders surprised the football world, knocking off the Chiefs at home, 40-32.
In Foxborough, COVID-19 was rearing its ugly head, causing this game to move to next week.
In New Jersey, are the Jets even worthy of being called an NFL team? They came in 0-4, and had been outscored by a fair margin each game. This one was no different, other than the opponent. Arizona got things started with a touchdown run, taking a 7-0 lead after one. Sam Ficken would get the Jets on the board, but Kyler Murray and Zane Gonzalez would get a touchdown run and field goal, respectively, to take a 17-3 lead into the break. In the third, the teams traded touchdowns, but the Jets still trailed by 14. In the fourth, Murray got another touchdown pass off, but couldn't convert the 2pt, and Arizona came away from Jersey 30-10 victors.
In Pittsburgh, it was the Chase Claypool show, but before I get to who won, the stats were closer than the scoreline. In the first, Claypool ran in for a score, but just a few seconds later, Miles Sanders answered with a run of his own. The game was 7-7 after one. In the second, the same two players scored again, but Claypool's was in the air this time, while Sanders barreled in for the score. Just before the break, Chris Boswell got his foot going, and gave the Steelers a 17-14 lead. In the third, Claypool and James Conner each scored for the Steelers, but Philadelphia wasn't going to go away easily, as Carson Wentz threw a touchdown pass and the subsequent 2pt to get within nine. The Eagles trailed 31-22 going into the final frame. In the fourth, the Eagles cut the lead to two with another Wentz score, but Claypool had the last laugh, getting one in for his fourth score of the day, and the Steelers hold on to defeat the Eagles, 38-29.
In Nashville, the scoreline and the stats will not add up. Before I get to those numbers, other numbers looked closer. There was only one sack in the game, and the Bills were on the receiving end of that. In the first, Ryan Tannehill got things started with a touchdown pass, but Buffalo answered with one of their own, and the game was tied at 7 after one. In the second, Derrick Henry gave Tennessee back the lead with a touchdown run, but Buffalo could only answer with a field goal. Tannehill rumbled one in himself just before the break to give the Titans a 21-10 lead at the half. In the third, Tennessee extended their lead with another Tannehill pass, but in the fourth, Buffalo got one more score, however, in the final five minutes, the Titans scored twice, and defeated the former undefeated Bills, 42-16. The tale of the tape: Buffalo gained 370 yards, while the Titans only had 334. Buffalo's three turnovers did not help matters at all.
In Landover, Maryland, defense was on one side of the ball in this one. No, there was not a shutout, but one team only ended up with 108 yards on the game. The Rams got things started with a score on the ground, but Sam Sloman missed the PAT, giving the Rams a 6-0 lead. Washington would answer with a score of their own, and held a 7-6 lead after one. In the second, the Rams started moving the ball, and Goff produced two scores, one in the air and one on the ground, but Dustin Hopkins was able to get a field goal just before the break. The Rams held a 20-10 lead. In the second half, Sam Sloman scored with his foot in the third, then Goff in the fourth, and the Rams knocked off the Washington Football Team, 30-10.
In San Francisco, we all know that dolphins are gentle creatures, right? Guess they didn't know that in San Francisco. Everything seemed to go the Dolphins' way, from time of possession to first downs to fourth down conversions, to overall yardage gained. Miami dominated in all those facets, but would they dominate the entire game? In the first, you'd certainly have thought so, scoring twice while keeping the 49ers off the board. In the second, San Francisco answered with a touchdown, but still trailed 14-7. Ryan Fitzpatrick countered that with a touchdown of his own, then Jason Sanders took over in the final two minutes, scoring three (yes, three) field goals in that span, with the Dolphins taking a 30-7 lead into the break. It got slightly better in the second half, as Jimmy G got benched (he'd just come back from being off two weeks after his ankle sprain). CJ Beathard got the 49ers into the end zone, but Miami countered with one of their own. Robbie Gould finished the scoring in that frame, leaving the 49ers down by 20, at 37-17. In the fourth, Sanders hit his fourth and fifth field goals, giving the Dolphins a 43-17 victory.
In Cleveland, this one was mainly a back and forth affair. Cleveland got on the board first with a field goal, but Indianapolis countered with a touchdown to hold a 7-3 lead after one. In the second, the teams traded scores in reverse, and the game was tied at 10. Then, Cleveland took over, scoring a touchdown and a field goal to take a 20-10 lead into the break. In the third, Philip Rivers threw a pick-six, then Indianapolis said "ok, you do that, we'll counter." They did, by taking the ensuing kickoff 101 yards for a score. Indy hit a field goal to get the game within seven after three, at 27-20. In the fourth, Indy got pinned too far back and Cleveland came up with a safety, then the two teams traded a field goal, giving Cleveland a 32-23 win over the Colts.
In Arlington, Texas, this one was a back and forth effort, even though the Giants came in winless. The Cowboys got things started with a Greg Zuerlein field goal, but the Giants answered with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-3 lead after one. The Giants extended the lead with a Graham Gano field goal, but the Cowboys answered with a pair of touchdowns to tie the game at 17, the latter being on a Daniel Jones fumble. In the final minute of the half, the Giants retook the lead on another Gano field goal, but the Cowboys responded with a touchdown pass to Dak Prescott, giving the Cowboys a 24-20 lead at the break. In the third, things got interesting, but sad (unless you're Dizart). The Giants got within one on a field goal, but as the Cowboys were driving, Dak Prescott got tackled and landed awkwardly, breaking his ankle in the process (did you smile about that, Dizart?). Andy Dalton came in to finish the drive, and Ezekiel Elliott rumbled it in for the score. The Cowboys led by eight after three, at 31-23. In the fourth, the Giants got another field goal from Gano, then rumbled in a touchdown to take a three point lead. At the two minute warning, Zuerlein tied the game at 34. The Giants were able to get the ball to their own 39 and had to punt. Andy Dalton started taking the Cowboys down the field, and with :31 left, found Michael Gallup for a 38 yard play. The Giants could not stop the Cowboys from getting a game winning field goal, and the Cowboys escaped at home with a 37-34 victory.
In Seattle, early on, the Vikings probably thought they had this one in the bag, but don't ever count Seattle out. In the first, Dalvin Cook ran in a score, giving the Vikes a 7-0 lead. Dan Bailey got involved in the second with a pair of field goals to take a 13-0 lead into the break. In the third, after Pete Carroll must have blown a gasket on the players, Seattle scored three straight touchdowns to move ahead, 21-13. Kirk Cousins got the Vikes back within two on a touchdown pass, but couldn't convert the 2pt, giving Seattle a 21-19 lead after three. In the fourth, Cousins hit Adam Thielen for his second score, staking the Vikes to a five point lead. With time winding down, Russell Wilson was able to get the ball to DK Metcalf for a score, but the ensuing 2pt was missed, giving Seattle a 27-26 victory. Seattle was outgained 449-314 in this one, but it's not about the yards, it's all about the points.
And finally, in New Orleans, this one was similar to the Seattle game...don't count New Orleans out. Justin Herbert got things started with a touchdown pass, but Wil Lutz was able to get a field goal just before the end of the quarter (:01), to give the Chargers a 7-3 lead. In the second, Los Angeles scored twice before Drew Brees could counter, and the Chargers held a 20-10 lead at the break. The third quarter was rather quiet, as Lutz was the only score. In the fourth, Brees tied the game at 20 after a touchdown pass, but Herbert got one back with under four to play, giving the Chargers a 27-20 lead. Brees was able to march the Saints back down the field before the :00 to get the game sent to overtime at 27-27. In overtime, Lutz got the Saints up by three, but remember, it isn't sudden death if the first team gets a field goal (only a touchdown or get pushed back and lose with a safety). Herbert was able to start at his own 40 after a roughing the passer penalty, but Marshon Lattimore said this game was ending on a 4th down and six, as he was able to keep Mike Williams from hitting midfield, and the Saints escaped at home in overtime, 30-27.
We'll see how the comp organizer does against his former home team...he's 3-1 after they pulled a rabbit out of a hat. He's 2-2 picking his new "home" team, after they got shellacked...again. LeoDaVinci is 2-3, after they probably should have rethought their QB situation. Dizart is 4-1 this year, and might feel bad about the Dak Prescott situation...maybe???
Just a reminder: if you only pick one underdog, you are ineligible for bonus points, and I know exactly how many are picked.
Any inactive tippers who tip and are below 2nd last, their score will jump to 2nd last, however, if they are above 2nd last, they will not lose points to fall to 2nd last (or the lowest active tipper)

The season has ended with a photo finish .. Dizart, who was joint leader last week, finished with 12/16 but was surrounded by a 13/16 and three 14/16s. Those four scores all earnt a bonus point and pushed him back to equal third, where we had a three way tie .. paper_aero won bronze on a countback and pushed Dizart off the podium.
paper_aero had the best countback figures at +4 .. next best were Dizart and Daaanieeel with +3.
Daaanieeel collected the gold medal by finishing back where he started. He was never lower than 5th in the standings during the entire season .. ditto srini701, who missed bronze on a countback.

paper_aero had the comp's best countback figures at +4. Next best were Dizart and Daaanieeel with +3 .. paper_aero collected his first bonus pt at the finish post, leaving just two blanks in that column: Dizart & dg_dave .. wwe84 and ozzz2002 collected quite a few; they finished in double digits!
Mustang ended the season spoon-less. In fact, the last time he collected a wooden spoon was over 6 years ago, in wk 4 of the 2014 comp! He has now gone spoon-less for 115 weeks, which is an all-time record for any tipping comp. The previous record-holder was George95, who had a run of 106 spoon-less weeks in the NCAAF comp from 2011 to 2017. The FT Hall of Fame wil be updated for this record-breaking achievement.
The defending titleholder was PaulE, who won by a margin of 5 pts (unlike this year's photo finish) .. dg_dave collected silver and Dizart bronze.
That brings to a close this year's NFL comp. Thank you linesmen & women; thank you ballboys & ballgirls .. and thank you to dg_dave for putting this together. There will be no end-of-season Super Bowl comp this year.
