There are those who say that there are no words that are a perfect rhyme with the word 'Orange'...

This is a view looking South from the Sugar Loaf Vineyards just a mile or so from the Welsh town of Abergavenny. The mountain in the distance is 'Blorenge' or 'The Blorenge' and its name is one of the very, very few words that are a perfect rhyme with orange.

Blorenge is located in the south-eastern corner of the Brecon Beacons National Park and its summit reaches a height of 1,841 feet or 561 metres. The mountain is believed to have derived its name from the Welsh word 'plor' (pimple) related to the Middle English word 'blure' (blister) or from the Welsh blawr ais meaning 'grey ribbed'.

A word of advice.... If you should ever visit the Sugar Loaf Vineyard and decide to sample the wines on their tasting menu, DO NOT take the car!

Well, it is September... September 1981.

This is an image of me and one of my comrades on an operation near the border with the Republic of Ireland just to the South of the village of Crossmaglen.

I could tell you more... But then I'd have to kill you all.

So that's what that irritating buzzing sound from above the house was early this morning...

Dragonfly

Feeding time at Gigrin Farm just outside the small mid-Wales town of Rhayader.

Not so long ago, the Red Kite Milvus milvus, was on the verge of extinction in the British Isles after centuries of persecution. Thanks to education and the efforts of the RSPB and other wildlife organisations, this beautiful bird is staging a miraculous comeback (almost at risk of becoming a bit of a pest in it's strongholds).

Gigrin Farm has provided a refuge for the Red Kite for a couple of decades now and feeding time, which takes place twice daily, is a fantastic spectacle with many hundreds of birds demonstrating their fantastic low-level flying skills as they snatch morsels from the ground and eating on the wing.

If you're ever in the Rhayader area, I can highly recommend a visit to Gigrin Farm.

We won't be seeing many of these around for too much longer.

Not the most colourful of butterflies to be found here in the UK but the Red admiral, Vanessa atalanta has been my absolute favourite since childhood.

I caught this one feeding on an Ivy plant in my front garden.

I'm not certain that I haven't posted this image here before now...

This friendly chap is 'Bear', a British Army security dog stationed at the Bessbrook base during the early 1980s... Some people are probably thinking "I expect his bark is worse than his bite" and you'd be wrong on both counts! His bark was fearsome and his bite was... Well 'savage' is the only word you could use to describe it (as his handler and numerous miscreants would testify).

I still thought that he was a big, beautiful boy though.

A view of the aircraft (a modified Mk IX Supermarine Spitfire) currently doing a fly-past of all the hospitals in the UK in thanks for their efforts during the current pandemic.

This image was taken last Saturday from a range of around three-quarters of a mile using my longest lens. The fly-past on this day was supposed to have been scheduled for the highlands of Scotland but the organisers changed it at short notice due to bad weather.

There's nothing quite like the sound of a Rolls-Royce Merlin at full chat.... Awesome!

Tellywellies, your picture reminded me of this one I took in August.
We grew all the veggies in our garden.



Sadly, the tomatoes and cucumbers have both passed their prime now, but the peppers are still bearing.

That all looks good and tasty ertrum. Impressive shot of the Spitfire sister seagull. It's a while since I saw one in flight. Not since the days when the Farnborough Airshow was worth seeing (now ended).
