The six matches in the final qualifying round (aka the play-off round) were completed last week. The six winners joined the 26 teams who were exempt until the group phase. The draw for the group phase took place on Friday 2nd October 2020 in Geneva. If you've got a few hours to kill and/or have an insomnia attack and can't hit the sack, you can read the complete details of the qualifying rounds and the exemption procedures here : Regulations of the UEFA Champions League 2020-21. Once again most of the 32 teams in this year's comp are familiar names, but there maybe a few qualifiers whose team names will be alien to most of us (see next post).
The group stage commences on Tuesday 20th October (the first round of the tipping comp), and 19 rounds later the UEFA Champions League Final will be played, after almost 7½ months, on Saturday 29th May 2021 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey [it was built for the 2008 Olympics but Turkey lost out to Beijing]. There's a two month mid-winter break, for all of us to grab some R&R, between the last round of the group phase on Wednesday 9th December 2020 and the start of the KO Round on Tuesday 16th February 2020. |
Rules: they're the same as last year, and the year before. The rules for this comp are simple: points

perfect picks
other bonus pts
dead-heats | one point for each correct pick.
if you forget to pick, the away teams are all yours (ineligible for bonus pts),
however, you receive the WS score if it's more than the aways. Default for
the semi-finals, the final and advance picks is the wooden spoon score.
picks are H-x-A at full-time; extra time and shootout lotteries are ignored.
if you pick a game solo, you score a bonus point ... or 1 of 2 if we have 12
or more runners, 1 of 3 if we have 18 or more runners.
8/8 scores a bonus point. You also receive a knighthood from Her Majesty.
no one picks a win, whoever picks a draw.
no one picks a draw, whoever picks the upset win.
if you pick all home teams (or all bar one), you're ineligible for bonus pts.
weekly wins vs. wooden spoon countback determine podium finishes;
if they're identical, bonus points will be used. |

We've had multiple winners of this comp but, until the last comp, no-one has won it back-to-back to successfully defend their UEFA title. That changed when N-Bomb won back-to-back titles; and he's now looking for a three-peat. Howie72 has been on the podium six times, without a win; Sypher four times for zero wins; and LeoDaVinci has been on the podium three times for zero wins.

This year's Champions League has 26 teams qualifying direct to the Group Stage of 32 teams. Once again a total of 79 teams, from 54 of the the 55 UEFA member nations, qualified for this year's competition (no team from Liechtenstein*), being 26 direct to the group stage (inside the white rectangle below) and four to the play-off round .. 8 of the other 49 teams progressed through the four qualifying rounds, to join the four who qualified direct to the six play-off round games. Those 12 teams are the ones outside the white rectangle. The 32 teams playing in this year's group stage are:
11 champions from countries ranked 1–11
6 runners-up from countries 1–6
5 third-placed teams from countries 1–5
4 fourth-placed teams from countries 1-4
6 the six survivors from the play-off round
26 teams qualified direct to the group stage (inside the white rectangle). They bypass all five preliminary rounds .. the four qualifying rounds plus the Play-Off Round.

The remaining six spots (the ones outside the white square) were filled from the 12 teams in the play-off round, being the 8 of 49 teams that
made it through the four qualifying rounds, and the four teams that auto-qualified for the play-off round (champions of countries ranked 12,
13 and 14 plus the 3rd placed team from country ranked 6). The six losers qualified for the Europe League group stage.
The champions of countries ranked 12 & 13, plus the 3rd placed team from country 6, were previously in the 3rd Qualifying Round. Normally,
two teams auto qualify for the play-off round (champions of countries #11 and #12) plus 10 from the other 51 teams. As the defending title-
holder and the Europa League champions had already qualified through their domestic leagues, it became four auto-qualifiers for the Play-Off
Round joined by 8 of the now 49 remaining teams ... and not 10 of 51 as is usually the case!

* the seven teams in Liechtenstein play in the Swiss national league. The winners of the Liechtenstein Cup qualify for the Europa League. No team from Liechtenstein has qualified to play in the Champions League through either route (through the Swiss League as winners or through the Europa League as winners).

. Last year's comp had 15 runners. This year a field of 14 lined up at the starters gate, with two no shows: KrivoyRog & PaulE. There's a newbie this year: Llynfi. Welcome aboard!
This year's comp, the 18th, didn't break any records. The all-time low remains the field of 13 runners set 11 years ago, in season 2009-10:

Round 1 of 19 saw just three of the eight games with double-digit correct picks. Three games were picked by no-one, or by one or two, which gave two weekly winners with 5/8: wwe84 and ozzz2002. At the other end Llynfi and toocool4u collected the wooden spoon with 2/8.
There were six bonus points .. and three of them was scored by ozzz2002, who's our leader at the end of Day One. A point in arrears is the other weekly winner, wwe84, who scored two bonus pts. The other bonus point was collected by LeoDaVinci, who's in 3rd place a further 2 pts in arrears. It's been a long time since we've had zero ties in the first three places on Day One of a tipping comp .. maybe it's a unique achievement.
Behind the three out front we have a two-way tie for 4th and then a six-way tie for 6th place; one of which is the defending titleholder, N-Bomb .. who became the first to retain his UEFA CL title. This year he's looking for a three-peat.
The next round will be played in your neck of the woods either this afternoon/ tonight or tomorrow morning, as the case may be: UEFA ( 2 ) Wed 21st Oct. The first two games kick-off in a bit over 3½ hours.

. From the day this comp started 18 seasons ago, back in 2003, the highest wooden spoon score was 4/8, which was achieved on numerous occasions. This week we have a new entry in the UEFA Record Book: the WS score was 5/8.
Between us our average strike rate was 74.1% (just under 6/8). This is the third-highest ever achieved over those 18 seasons. The UEFA Record Book has been updated for this feat, as well.
ozzz2002 collects yet another wooden spoon to make it three back-to-back. He falls off the podium to 4th place; replaced by srini701. There's no change out front. The ten players behind the three leaders are still separated by a mere 2 pts.

. From the day the UEFA CL comp started 18 seasons ago, back in 2003, the highest strike rate we'd ever achieved was 78.9%, set in R16 of the 2011-12 comp. This week we had a full house with 14 of 14 lodging a total of 112 picks .. 102 of them bore fruit for a strike rate of 91.1% (aka 10 wrong in 112) .. we skipped the 80s completely! That's one entry in the FT-PL Record Book.
Does lighting strike three times in four rounds? Three weeks ago in R4 we saw an all-time record set for the highest-ever wooden spoon score with 5/8 .. we repeated that effort in R6. This week in R7 we went one better: the spoon score was an outrageous 6/8 .. aka the reward for a strike rate of 75% is a spoon! That's the 2nd entry in the Record Book.
This is the third entry: 6 of the 14 lodged perfect picks .. and we've only had 10 perfect picks, in total, over the previous 18 seasons! The results of 3 of the 8 games were decided in time added-on: Sevilla waited until the 95th minute to score their winner, Chelsea scored theirs in the 91st, and Juventus scored their winner in 92nd! The other five games were decided well before full-time.

. Once again we had a full house with 14 of 14 lodging picks.
We all had identical picks for 4 of the 8 games. We hit pay dirt with two of them but struck out with the other two. Our strike rate fell to 57.1%, from yesterday's all-time record of 91.1%.
wwe84 collected the wooden spoon with 3/8 and *nine* of us were weekly winners with 5/8, which is *less* than yesterday's 6/8 for the spoon.
N-Bomb has now scored four consecutive weekly wins; Howie72 has three consecutive wins.

The six players behind the first three are now separated by a mere point.
That completes four of the six group matches. Even with two games still to play, six teams have qualified for one of the 16 spots in the KO stage: Barcelona, Juventus, Chelsea, Sevilla, Manchester City and Bayern Munich.
Their remaining two games are of mere academic interest for Bayern Munich, as they've already qualified as group winners. The last two games for the other five will determine who goes through as group winners; and thus avoid other group winners in the KO Round (where group winners play group runners-up).

. A truckload of upsets saw 4 of the 8 games picked by no-one, or one or two players. Only two of the 8 games reached double figures for correct picks. Somehow, Llynfi and Sypher came out of the quagmire with 5/8 correct for the win and, at the other end, Howie72 and toocool4u collect a wooden spoon each with picks of 2/8.
Barcelona lost at home to PSG. Their previous CL match was a 0-3 home loss to Juventus in their last group match (scroll up two posts), which makes it their first-ever back-to-back home losses in the CL. No-one picked PSG. We all picked Barcelona to win except for two players: Sypher & toocool4u, who collect a bonus point each for picking a draw.
Sypher collected another two bonus points for solo picks; and climbs up the table from 10th to 7th, a mere 4 pts behind the joint leaders (he was previously 9 pts in arrears).
There's no change out front as the first three all scored 3/8. The next seven (that's half the field) are separated by a mere 4 pts; and of those seven three are tied for 4th place, 2 pts behind the first three. The joint leaders, N-Bomb and LeoDaVinci, are still spoon-less.

LeoDaVinci was the only player to pick the draw in Dortmund. A bonus point for the solo pick puts him into the lead solo, pushing N-Bomb (joint leader last week) back into second place, a point behind.
One point now separates every spot from 1st to 7th. Howie72 & paper_aero are a further point behind in a tie for the 8th spot. From there we have a gap of 3 pts to the rest of the field. With only five rounds left, it's unlikely anyone from 10th down will finish on the podium, as they're 10+ pts behind the leader.
