Last year's tipping comp was cancelled. This year's will be at the same site as last year. A bracket for 2021 has been setup once again at cbssports.com .. for those of us who played last year, you're half-way there, as invite emails have been sent by csbssports.com to all of last year's participants (using last year's email addresses). The email does not display your reg'd cbs ID. The scoring system remains unchanged. There are 63 games in
this comp; we pick all of them in one go on the cbssports.com website:
1st Round (32 games) : 1 pt
2nd Round (16 games) : 2 pts
3rd Round ( 8 games) : 3 pts (regional semis ) Sweet Sixteen
4th Round ( 4 games) : 4 pts (regional finals) Elite Eight
5th Round ( 2 games) : 6 pts (national semis ) Final Four
6th Round ( 1 game ) : 9 pts (national final)
Seedings: additional pts added for each correct pick, being the team's seed. |

This year's Madness starts on Friday, March 19 at 12:00 noon and the final is on Monday, April 5. The bracket will open for tipping when the field is inserted by cbssports.com, which should happen on Sunday, March 14. However, the last four teams to qualify will not be known until Thursday (they'll enter the comp as the four #16 seeds) .. btw a #16 seed has never won a game against their #1 seed opponent since the NCAA started the current Madness format in 1985, until 2019, when UMBC beat Virginia 74-54 .. #16 seeds are now 1-135 all-time. Sunday 14th March: the full field of 68, seedings and bracket are released.
Last Four play-in: Thu 18 March now aka First Four
1st Round: Fri-Sat March 19-20
2nd Round: Sun-Mon March 21-22
3rd Round: Sat-Sun March 27-28
4th Round: Mon-Tue March 29-30
Final Four: Saturday 3rd April

Since 1985, when the NCAA started the present KO format with 64 teams, no-one has had a perfect bracket of 63/63 correct (per cbssports.com). The best they've seen is 55/63 (the best here at FT is 51/63 by Howie72 back in 2007). For the frustrated actuaries amongst us: there are 9.2 quintillion combinations for a 63-game bracket, aka 2^63 ... 9,223,372,036,854,775,808

This year's tipping comp is the 19th edition of March Madness! No one has retained their title in this comp and N-Bomb is the only person to win it twice (2011 and 2017). The winner of the 2008 comp, ralzzz, and the winner of the 2015 comp, toocool4u, hold the record for the biggest winning margin (see summary tables below) .. and doomed won bronze in 2008 the hard way; he failed to pick any of the Final Four!
Eleven years later, dg_dave went one better .. he won the 2019 comp without picking any of the Final Four! Howie72 holds the record for the most correct picks with 51/63, achieved in the 2007 comp, and the fewest correct picks for gold was 32/63 by blinkybill in 2006.

We were able to see prior year results and standings .. 16 years of history. That's gone. There was a group message board. That's gone. We were able to see everyone else's brackets after lock-down. That's gone: How do I see if someone has submitted brackets in my pool?
Unfortunately, you will only be able to see who has submitted brackets after brackets lock on Friday, March 19 at 12:15pm EST. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. We hope to add this feature back to the game in the future. This means that the usual results post for each day's play is now impossible. We're all flying blind. All we can see is the pts each of us have scored and where we are on the ladder, but not how everyone got there (apart from your own). A total of 12 people submitted brackets: dg_dave

Last comp, back in 2019, had 18 runners .. 12 are back for another dose, with six no shows" ElfTwinkle, kevinatiluda, linkan, terraorca and toocool4u. N-Bomb is the only player who's won this twice over the last 19 years. No-one has retained their title .. dg_dave, the defending titleholder, will have a go at it this year.
After just one day, themonarch picked 15/16 and is in triple figures already, with a lead of 33 points!! He won this in 2014 and will join N-Bomb if he's still there at the finish.
It's still very early days but, if all his picks bear fruit, the monarch may win this by an outrageous margin of over 200 pts. We have no idea how many live picks anyone has as cbs have, in their wisdom, ditched that feature when they decided to update the website.
Anyway, here's one scenario: if themonarch fails to pick any of the Final Four, he'll score zero points for the last seven games but will finish with 538-71 = 467 pts if all his prior picks bear fruit, which is still 120 points ahead of the next best mpt figures (yoyoandcigs). Is his lead after Day One so big than no-one can mow him down?
With the number of upsets so far, I don't even want to see my bracket....
To ensure Howie72 didn't feel left out, I dug around the website for a while and hit every link to, eventually, find everyone's picks. However, they weren't in a printable bracket format (like your own picks) .. well done cbs .. so I spent a few hours killing trees trying to print everyone's picks. Portrait was a waste of time, as the cbs web designer ensured ctrl-A failed to work & the far right of each page disappeared when printing (three pages of junk per person). I didn't realise there was a missing bit on every page until I'd finished printing.
Landscape was no better, IE didn't help and Chrome didn't help (even when scaling the page to 60%). I somehow ended up in MS Edge by mistake and the print scaling in there allowed everyone's bracket to print onto two pages in landscape. As ctrl-A was still disabled, scrolling down the webpage for p2 of the print was an intricate exercise. Far out. Shoot me.

With the number of upsets so far, I don't even want to see my bracket.... With teams from two cities I've lived in winning, a lot of brackets are busted (Oral Roberts is in Tulsa, and ACU in Abilene). I was in Tulsa in the 1980s and graduated high school in Abilene.

Yesteday themonarch hit pay dirt with upsets galore. Today it's ozzz2002. He was in 3rd place yesterday 37 points behind themonarch. Today he's 36 pts in front of him (aka a 73 pt turnaround) .. yoyoandcigs retains 2nd place and LeoDaVinci moves up into 3rd, pushing themonarch back to 4th.
At the other end, gtho4 follows up yesterday's wooden spoon with another one. He has his feet firmly planted, encased in cement, on the bottom rung of the ladder. He was the only player who didn't participate in musical chairs .. no-one kept their spot from yesterday, apart from gtho4r.
Neither ozzz2002 nor yoyoandcigs have won this comp (yoyoandcigs finished on the podium in 2016 for a bronze medal). No-one has retained their title (the defending titleholder, dg_dave, is now in the bottom half of the table).
For ozzz2002 to win this he'll be doing it the hard way .. he has no live picks for the winner, no live picks for the two finalists, and only two of his Final Four are still live (aka he has just two live picks for the last seven games). LeoDaVinci, who has the best mpt figures, is the only one in the first five with seven live picks for the last seven games. The next player with a complete set is srini701 in 6th place and then George95 in 11th.
We have no idea how many live picks anyone has as cbs ditched that feature when they decided to update the website.
Sypher and gtho4 are favourites to be the first two eliminated from the comp; and retire to the grandstand as spectators. They have the two lowest mpt numbers but, curiously, both of them have seven live picks for the last seven games.

ozzz2002 retains his lead at the end of Day 3 but with a reduced margin. LeoDaVinci moves into 2nd place and themonarch is back on the podium (he won Day 3 with 34 points), which pushed yoyoandcigs down from 2nd to 4th.
Apart from ozzz2002 & srini701, it was another edition of musical chairs .. srini701 was 6th at the end of Day 1, sixth at the end of Day 3 .. and is still there at the end of Day 3. He hasn't moved one inch.
LeoDaVinci has never won this, but he's finished on the podium seven times (for six silver and one bronze). He still has the best mpt figures and seven live picks for the last seven games .. gtho4 is the other player with seven live for the last seven, but it won't do him much good where he is, two off the bottom. Everyone else has lost a Final Four pick, or two.
Six of the 12 players still have three live picks for the last three games. We have no idea how many live picks (in total) anyone has as that feature was ditched by cbs when they decided to update the website.

Once again LeoDaVinci moves up the ladder .. he replaces ozzz2002 at the top of the pile .. and yoyoandcigs moves into 3rd, pushing themonmarch off the podium. In fact, we had a perfect rendition of musical chairs. None of us retained our spot from Day 3, not even srini701 who, finally, isn't in 6th place.
The elimination yesterday of #1 Illinois and #4 Oklahoma State, and #3Kansas in today's games, knocked the stuffing out of most brackets.
LeoDaVinci, who's never won this, still has the best mpt figures at 265 points (and he has seven live picks for the last seven games) .. gtho4 is the other player with seven live for the last seven, but it won't do him much good .. his mpt is 63 points lower at 202. Everyone else has lost a Final Four pick, or two. Howie72 & ozzz2002 have gone one better .. they've each lost three of their Final Four.
Four of us still have three live picks for the last three games. Two of those four are running last and second last viz. Sypher and gtho4. The 4th player with three live is N-Bomb, in the middle of the field.
Is an mpt of 265 pts enough for LeoDaVinci to win this?
Let's say his last three picks are all wrong. He'll lose 9+1 for the winner plus 6+1 and 6+2 for the two finalists. a total of 25 pts. That takes him down to 255 pts .. themonarch has an mpt of 250 pts, so he needs all his picks to bear fruit. He needs #5 Villanova to win and #11 Syracuse to make the Final Four. If that does happen, LeoDaVinci will lose #2 Houston from his Final Four (they both have #5 Villanova). That 6+2 loss pushes LeoDaVinci from 255 pts down to 247 which, ceteris paribus, leaves him 3 pts below themonarch; and themonarch wins it all!
Now, if #5 Villanova fails to reach the Final Four they'll both lose 4+5 and end up with 241 points and 238 points .. but no-onehas an mpt that's anywhere near that, to threaten either of them. N-Bomb is closest with an mpt of 221 points but he can't make up the missing 20 points, ceteris paribus for the other 8 games. He'll fall 5 pts short: if he does reach that mpt of 221 themonarch will lose #11 Syracuse which is 4+11=15 pts.
That completes 48 of the 63 games in this Madness. For those of us interested in or fascinated by numbers, there are 128 possible permutations for those 15 remaining games. Howie72 and illiniman14 don't figure in any of those 128 permutations, as their mpt pts are below LeoDaVinci's current score. They have the honour of being the first to retire to the grandstand as mere spectators; the first to be eliminated.

We're falling like ten pins behind LeoDaVinci. On Day 4 illiniman14 & Howie72 were sent to the grandstands as their mpt was below LeoDaVinci's. Today, Day 5, another *five* join them: our early leader, themonarch, plus N-Bomb, dg_dave, George95 and Sypher .. aka it's an arithmetic certainty that seven of the 12 runners can't win this. Another three should join the gallery tomorrow, leaving us with a LeoDaVinci vs. yoyoandcigs shootout for the gold medal.
Is it all over .. do we have already a winner?
LeoDaVinci should win the shootout, as his mpt of 248 pts is way ahead of the 217 pts for yoyoandcigs .. aka a huge margin of 31 pts. All he needs is for #1 Michigan to win this and he wins the tipping comp. What happens if Michigan fail to make the Final Four (yoyandcigs doesn't have Michigan): he'll lose 9+1 for the winner, 6+1 for the finalist, plus 4+1 for a Final Four (a total of 22 points), which is not enough. What if #2 Houston fail to make the Final Four (yoyandcigs doesn't have Houston): he'll lose another 4+2 = 6 points for a loss of 28 points, which is still not enough! LeoDaVinci needs to also lose points tomorrow, on Day 6.
It looks like we'll have a new winner of this comp .. our 18th Madness winner across 19 years!
Who'll finish 3rd behind these two makes for some interesting reading .. ozzz2002 will finish with 200 points if #2 Houston make the Final Four (he has no other live picks). If #1 Michigan win the comp, srini701 will finish on 201 pts for bronze. On the other hand, if #1 Gonzaga beat #2 Houston in the final then gtho4 will finish on 202 pts for bronze .. at the moment he's a speck on the horizon, running 2nd last. LeoDaVinci and gtho4 still have seven live picks for the last seven games.
That completes 52 of the 63 games in this Madness. Four more games tomorrow and, from there, we have those last seven games. |

We're still falling like ten pins behind LeoDaVinci. On Day 4 two players were sent to the grandstands as their mpt was below LeoDaVinci's. Yesterday, Day 5, another five joined them. Today, Day 6, another three joined them (ozzz2002, srini701 and gtho4). We have two left standing for the gold medal: LeoDaVinci plus yoyoandcigs.
If LeoDaVinci picks should collapse and he gets everything wrong from here to the end, he'll finish on his current score of 207 pts .. yoyandcigs would then need all of his remaining live picks to be correct to finish on his mpt of 201 pts, but he can't. Both of them have #1 Gonzaga to reach the Final Four.
They both lose 4+1 pts if Gonzaga fails to make the Final Four, giving yoyancigs a theoretical maximum of 205 pts, ceteris paribus, which is below LeoDaVinci's current score of 207 points. If Gonzaga make the Final Four, LeoDaVinci will have 207+5, which is more than the mpt of yoyoandcigs. In other words, LeoDaVinci cannot be overtaken and will win the gold medal, our 18th winner in 19 years!
yoyandcigs should win silver and either ozzz2002 or srini701 should win bronze.

yoyoandcigs, the 2nd last man standing, has fallen, which makes it 11 players sent to the grandstands as spectators, as their mpt is below LeoDaVinci's. Yesterday's arithmetic has been confirmed: LeoDaVinci has won the gold medal!
Two records to consider: LeoDaVinci emulates the 2019 winner, dg_dave, who won gold without picking any of the Final Four. LeoDaVinci won gold without relying on a Final Four pick. The biggest winning margin is 20 points, by ralzzz in 2008 and then toocool4u in 2015 (scroll back to the start of this thread for a complete list). There's a good chance this record will tumble.
ozzz2002 retains 2nd place as his last live pick, #2 Houston, won .. and progress to the Final Four. His picks have expired, leaving him on 200 pts.
It's now up to yoyoandcigs & srini701 to chase him down with their last remaining picks .. yoyandcigs can catch him if #1 Gonzaga play in the final, but we'll need a tie-breaker for the silver/bronze medals (ozzz2002 has chosen 69 pts for the final, yoyoancigs has chosen 176 pts) .. srini701 will finish 4th because, if #1 Gonzaga play in the final, they got there by knocking out #1 Michigan, which is srini701's pick for the winner.
If Michigan win this, srini701 will collect the silver medal and ozzz2002 the bronze, which pushes yoyoandcigs off the podium.
