Rather fittingly yesterday, 11th September, was the date that two towns formally twinned. These were the town of St Helier in Jersey and the town of Bad Wurzach in southern Germany.

So what was special about this event? In 1942 British people, civilians born in the UK, were shipped to Germany and imprisoned until 1945, naturally some died in the prison camps. Earlier this year the mayor of Bad Wurzach formally apologised to the people of Jersey for this action and asked for their forgiveness. The mayor of St Helier in Jersey visited Bad Wurzach this week and the ceremony took place yesterday, an act of peace and friendship between two former enemies.

I am glad to see that there is some good coming out of such a tragic event. I know of people who are trying to reach out to others whom they were quarrelling with. It is great to see that towns are doing the same.
