French Open 2021Will there finally be a different champion on the red clay of Roland Garros on the men's side? Or will the "King of Clay" go ahead of Roger Federer on the slam count? Can Iga Swiatek retain her title or will the world number 1 Ashleigh Barty reassert her credentials? The French Open starts Monday, May 30. Fifiona81 did a grand double in September and has a tough ask on her hands here in our comp. Sign up here if you'd like to take a shot at guessing what's going to happen in Paris.

- Barbora Krejcikova, who was outside the top 100 of the rankings before the 2020 French Open, is the new queen in town. She became the 3rd unseeded champion at Roland Garros in the last 5 years (Ostapenko in 2017 and Swiatek in 2020) and the first Czech winner of the French Open since Hana Mandlikova in 1981. She is the sixth first-time Grand Slam champion to be crowned in the last six editions of the French Open and the 13th first-time singles winner in the last 22 majors....talk of equality and a churn in the women's game
- Krejcikova beat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in the final. For the first time in the Open Era at Roland Garros, there were four first time semi-finalists in women’s singles – Maria Sakkari, Barbora Krejcikova, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Tamara Zidansek. The only other time that has happened in the Open Era at any Slam was in 1978 at the Australian Open.
- Given that last 4 line-up, our comp here ended at the quarter-final stage itself. But some of us did well enough to have as many as 4 picks in the last 8, which itself is a commendable feat! George95 takes a very well-deserved top spot in our comp for picking Sakkari, Gauff and Badosa in his team. N-Bomb takes a very close silver, while LeoDaVinci takes the bronze.
- Fifiona81 ends at the bottom of the heap on tie-break...will the men's singles be any better for her? We'll know soon...

- Novak Djokovic added one more major point in his favour in the discussion about the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) by winning his second French Open title on Sunday. He is now on 19, and well on his way to equal or surpassing the 20 shared by his greatest rivals, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. This title also put Djokivic halfway to a calendar Grand Slam, after the Australian Open title in January.
- Djokovic achieved lot more firsts along the way. He became the ONLY man in the Open era to win all Slams at least twice (Federer has only 1 French Open, while Nadal has only 1 Australian Open). Djokovic becomes the first man since Ted Schroeder at Wimbledon 1949 to have multiple comebacks from two sets down to win the title. Djokovic was two sets to love down in the 4th round and in the final.
- Spare a thought for the beaten finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. The youngster lost his grandmother 5 minutes before the start of the finals, and yet played a heck of a match in his first Grand Slam final. His time will surely come and he will be multiple slam winner in the years to come, for sure.
- The best match of the tournament came in the semifinals when Djokovic handed the king of clay only the 3rd defeat of his career at Roland Garros. Unlike in the women's game, 7 of the top 10 ranked men made it to the quarterfinals. The young Spaniard Davidovich Fokina was the exception after he put out the "in-form" Casper Ruud on his way to the last 8.
- Our picks reflected the "stability" in the men's game. Many of us picked at least 6 of the 8 quarter-finalists. wwe84 was the ONLY one to pick Djokovic to win the title, but then he also picked Nadal to reach the finals (though both Nadal and Djokovic were in the same half of the draw). Howie72 and srini701 tied for the top spot, but a "perfect" tie-break score gave Howie72 the title. gtho4 takes bronze, again on a better tie-break score, from Dizart.
- Wimbledon starts in a couple of weeks (June 28). Hoping to see some of our regulars (read ozzz2002, paper_aero, Sypher) return for that
