The European football championships begin next month on Friday 11th June. The final will be played in London on Sunday 11th July. The semi-finals will also be played at Wembley Stadium. All games prior to these will be played across England, Scotland and continental Europe. Portugal beat France 1-0 aet to win Euro 2016, Spain beat Germany 4-0 in 2012, Spain beat Germany 1-0 in 2008 and Greece beat Portugal 1-0 in 2004. This is the 5th edition of the Euro tipping comp at FT. The comp will have 9 rounds, 8 games each round (except for last round of group matches, Round 5, plus the semis and final). Advance picks will plug the holes in R5 plus the semis & final to get to the 8 pts, same as UEFA Champions League. Bonus pts will also be awarded, same as the UEFA CL tipping comps, with the added spice of a bonus point if you're the weekly winner (the round's winner) solo: - you're the round's winner solo or one of two.
- perfect picks 8/8.
- solo pick or one of two.
- no one picks win, whoever picks a draw, e.g. 9-3-0 the three who picked a draw.
- no one picks draw, whoever picked the upset win, e.g. 10-0-2 (won't apply if even split, e.g. 6-0-6).
If there's a dead-heat at the end of this comp with this scoring system, I'll be a monkey's uncle. If we do, the usual HoF vs. WS countback, and then bonus pts if equal, will apply. The defending titleholder is gtho4. The podiums at previous comps looked like this: Gold Silver Bronze

The field of 18 for the 2016 edition of the Euro tipping comp equalled the record set in 2012 for a Euro comp at FT (there were 13 runners in 2008 and 17 runners back in 2004).
We have 11 survivors from the 2016 comp; they're back for another dose: Dizart, Fifiona81, Howie72, LeoDaVinci, N-Bomb, paper_aero, srini701, wwe84, gtho4, ozzz2002 and Sypher. The last three tipsters are the only survivors from the first edition way back in 2004.
We have, however, roped in three newbies: andymuenz, toocool4u and Llynfi, giving us a field of 14 for Euro 2020. Welcome aboard! The seven no-shows are AlonsoKing, dg_dave, ElfTwinkle, George95, illiniman14, PaulE, terraorca
The defending title holder is gtho4 (srini701 won silver and AlonsoKing won bronze). Portugal are the defending titleholder at Euro 2020. They begin their defence on Tuesday.
Dizart wins the first round with picks of 7/8 .. he picked the card except for the upset win by Finland (picked by no-one). He also collected the only bonus point in Round 1 and has skipped away to a 2 point lead. The other 13 runners are separated by 2 pts. There's a long way to go before we find the winner of this comp .. there are 9 rounds with 8 points up for grabs each round.

Four upsets, four that went according to the form book and we now have a four-way tie out front! The first six are separated by a single point.
Sypher and toocool4u are the R2 winners with 6/8. They also collected a bonus point each and climbed up the ladder to join Dizart as two parts of the four-way tie out front .. wwe84 also collected a bonus point. He's the 4th part of the four-way tie.
The 4th bonus pt for the round was collected by Fifiona81. Like wwe84 & toolcool4u, she also foresaw Poland failing to win.
There's a 2 pt gap back to the peloton, where 7 players are separated by a single point (same spread as the six out front).
Five players kept their spot from the 1st round, and the rest of us played musical chairs. Round 3 may see a perfect rendition of musical chairs (as we're all so close together).
andymuenz is the lone ranger. He's bringing up the rear a further point in arrears.

We now have a field of 15 runners. George95 is no longer a no-show from the 2016 comp. Welcome back!
We have a new leader .. srini701 picked 5/8 for the solo win and scoots up the table from 7th to 1st. Behind him, a point in arrears, we have a five-way tie for second! The first six are separated by a single point (no change from previous round).
toocool4u is 7th, a point in arrears. The rest of the field (all eight of us) are separated by a mere 2 pts.
Two of the three upset results were picked by no-one. However, srini701 went out on a limb and picked the Spain v Poland 1-1 draw.
R2 saw five players keep their spot from R1, and the rest of us played musical chairs. R3 saw just 3 players keep their spot from R2. Those three players haven't moved one inch .. they were equal 10th in R1, equal 10th in R2 and are still equal 10th in R3.

We've had yet another change out front. Dizart & Fifiona81 now occupy first place .. and srini701 slips back to make it a four-way tie for third place.
Once again, the first six are separated by a mere point; being no change from previous round or the one before that, aka the first six have been separated by a single point for every round of the comp except the first.
We had a perfect rendition of musical chairs .. no-one kept their spot from R3, the previous round.
The next round, the last of the group stage, starts tomorrow and finishes tomorrow: Euro 2020 [5] Wed 23 June. The first of the KO rounds starts on Saturday, giving us a gap of a only three days between the end of the group stage and the start of R6, the KO Round.
To give everyone a chance (we don't all login everyday), you can lodge your picks for R6 in two batches, one on Saturday and one on Sunday : Euro 2020 [6] Sat 26 June. The Saturday batch can be lodged now, as we have enough group match results to identify the participants in the Saturday KO matches.

Dizart slips back to 2nd leaving Fifiona81 all on her lonesome out front. Howie72, this round's winner with 6/8, jumps up from 9th to join Dizart in equal second place. The first six are separated by 2 pts (it was just one point for the previous three rounds).
srini701 and gtho4 collect a wooden spoon each with stupendous picks of 2/8. Both of them tumble down the table.
Four players kept their spot from the previous round .. the rest of us played musical chairs.

Belgium, Portugal, Italy, France and Spain have ended up on the same side of the
draw (coloured brown above). Only two of those five can reach the semi-finals.
For those of us who have both Germany and England to reach the semis, only one
of them can get through as they play each other in the next round (the KOR).
Ditto for those of us who have both England and the Netherlands as semi-finalists.
If they win their next match (KOR), they'll face each other in the quarter-finals.
When we lodge our KOR picks, we'll also lodge our final advance picks x3, being
the two finalists and the winner. If your two finalists are on the same side of the
draw, you'll automatically lose one of them, as they both can't play in the final.

Those who picked a Italy-France finals, both teams are in same half, and will meet in semis, if they both get there  Netherlands seems to have a few backers and it's out...as is Portugal...

Confused about how the finalists work since it says you get 2 points if your winner pick loses the final. But didn't you already get 1 point for them for making the finals (assuming you pick one of your finalists as the winner)? Correct, your winner need not be one of your finalists. There are three separate
picks worth a total of 6 pts. If your pick for the winner makes the final, it's worth
a minimum of 2 pts (and a maximum 4 pts).

A truckload of upsets saw 4 of 8 games picked by no-one! Our strike rate was a paltry 21.7%.
The KO Round saw three winners with 3/8 plus *seven* wooden spoons for those of us with humungous picks of 1/8 .. and the remaining five players scored a mere 2/8 with their picks.
That completes 6 of 9 rounds in the tipping comp. With 1/3rd remaining we have the first *nine* players separated by a mere 2 pts. There's gap of 2 pts to the rest of us, who'll need a miracle to end up on the podium at the finish line.

We started with 24 teams and now we're down to the final four: Italy v Spain
England v Denmark Are the stars lining up .. can England, managed by Gareth Southgate, finally win a tournament .. after 55 long years of waiting. In 1966 they won the FIFA World Cup at Wembley 4-2 aet vs West Germany. The last time they were in the semis of Euro was way back in 1996, at Wembley, when they drew 1-1 aet vs Germany but went out 6-5 on penalties. Gareth Southgate missed England's sixth .. will this be his redemption, after 25 years of waiting.
George95 and Sypher are this round's winners with stupendous picks of 6/8. Dizart and Llynfi collected a wooden spoon each with 1/8. Sypher replaced Fifiona81 at the top of the pile, George95 is finally off the bottom rung, replaced by Llynfi .. and Dizart tumbled from 2nd to 7th.
LeoDaVinci and gtho4 were the only players to retain their spot from the previous round. The rest of us played musical chairs, which is unusual this late in a tipping compo.
The first six are separated by a mere 2 pts (down from the first nine in the previous round). From there we have a gap of 2 pts to the rest of us.

The final two rounds (semis and the final) will see our advance picks come into to play. Advance picks for the semi-finalists x4 will be added into the next round, and our advance picks for the final (finalists x2 plus winner) will be added into the last round.
If England win Euro 2020, Sypher will surely win this .. he has picked 3 of the 4 semi-finalist and went out on a limb picking England to win the final vs Italy (fwiw gtho4 did likewise). On the other hand, Fifiona81 in second place has picked none of the four semi-finalists, and has picked England to lose the final vs Italy .. wwe84 in 3rd place has picked 3 of the 4 semi-finalists, but is running dead for the final with no live picks x3. The semi-finals start on Tuesday giving us, again, a gap of a only three days between rounds : Euro 2020 [8] Tue 6 July. The 2nd semi will be played on Wednesday, which will give us a gap of four days to the final: Euro 2020 [9] Sun 11 July *FINAL*.
