Games of the XXXII Olympiad
Welcome to the tipping comp for the 2020 Olympics, being held in 2021. (Confused yet?) The Games will be held in Tokyo, the same city as the 1964 event. There are six new events- Sport climbing, skateboarding, karate, surfing, baseball and softball, as well as all the old favourites. In all there are 33 sports with 339 different events. The FunTrivia Olympics will be conducted alongside the real thing, and everyone is invited to take part. ----------------------------------------- Some rules-Each tipster will pick one event and points will be a simple 5-3-1 format. Depending on numbers, this may be increased to two events per player. I will review in the next few days. - Tip three athletes in each event -A bonus point will be awarded if you tip the gold medalist in your selected event. -Points will be awarded in finals only. Some events will have short turnaround times between heats/semi finals/finals, so we will all need to be on our toes. -Each event will close as near as possible to the actual starting time. -Contestants may be either individuals (eg, men's 100 metres freestyle) or teams (eg, Mens Hockey). Tiebreakers1- How many total medals will the host nation, Japan, win? 2- What will be the winning time in the men's 50m freestyle? These sites can help, but doubtless there are many others that are similar. https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/en/results/all-sports/olympic-schedule.htmhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Summer_Olympics#The_GamesPlease get your events in quickly, so that I can set up my spreadsheet!

Since George picked men's tennis singles, I shall go with Men's Hockey Men's tennis singles is yours. I can't have more than one pick. I'll edit the post to make it clear the list of five were fillers, in case if we don't have enough events.

NO NO...men's tennis singles is probably too predictable right now....I shall stick with Men's hockey please.

We only have eight events so far, with only a few days to go. I reckon we can double up now.
Picks so far are-
Event Start Date - Medal date
Women's tennis singles July 24 - August 1 Men's Rugby Sevens July 26 - July 28 Men's Individual Archery July 31 Men's 100m Sprint July 31 - August 1 Men's Freestyle Wrestling, 68kg August 4 Women's Heptathlon August 4 - August 5 Men's Hockey July 24 - August 5
I will be breaking this down into 3 or 4 threads, but lead-in times can be a bit tight, so we will all have to be on our toes.
My second pick is
Mixed Triathlon Relay July 31

We now have 18 events from 9 players, and will not be accepting any more. However, if your name is not one of the nine, you are still free to play, but you will not be eligible for the bonus point for picking your own sport's winner.
I will be posting three threads shortly with links to each event. Some of these links will not be populated yet so there will be some leniency in getting your tips in.
Simply pick three selections for each discipline, and also add your tiebreakers in the 'Olympics Part I' thread.

- Welcome to the medals ceremony of the 2020 Olympics! We had a field of 11 players, tipping in 18 vastly different sports. In Australia, the Games were a very welcome distraction in Covid lockdowns.
- The Men's soccer was won by the powerhouse team from Brazil, and everybody was on board for that one. Spain and Mexico rounded out the placings. In the Women's soccer, only andymuenz picked Canada to win. They beat Sweden in the gold medal match, with USA beating the Aussie girls for the bronze.
- As expected, Asian athletes dominated the Women's Badminton. China's Chen Yufei claimed gold.
- The world's No 1. Ash Bardy, departed early in the Women's Tennis, as did local hope, Naomi Osaka. Number 9 seed, Swiss Belinda Bencic, won, but nobody tipped her, OR the silver medallist, Marketa Vondrousova, who is rated 91 in the world!
- The Men's Hockey was won by Belgium, with Australia and India in the minor placings. Woman's Surfing made its debut at Tokyo, and the red-hot favourite, Carissa Moore (USA) took home the gold. In Rowing, the Woman's Eights was another victory for Canada, with New Zealand and China trailing behind.
- In the Rugby Sevens, the only surprise was Argentina winning Bronze. Fiji were odds-on, and beat the Kiwis in the gold medal match.
- Men's Archery. The only winner was Turk Mete Gazoz. None of us hit the target!
- The Women's Synchronised Diving from the 10 metre platform was spectacular (but you would not catch ME on one of those things, without a parachute!). China beat USA and Mexico. In the last ever sailing of the 49-class Skiffs, Great Britain beat New Zealand and Germany.
- Another interesting debut event was the Mixed Triathlon Relay. A popular choice for this one was Great Britain, which was tipped by the majority of us. The blue-riband event, the Men's 100 metres sprint was a bit of a surprise. The Italian runner, Lamont Jacobs beat American, Fred Kerley and Andre De Grasse (Canada). Not a Jamaican in the top three!
- Lisa Carrington, from New Zealand was another hot favourite in the Womans's K1 Canoe 200m, and man-mountain Ryan Crouser (USA), outthrew all the other big dudes in the Shot Put.
- Nafi Thiam from Belgium took the gold in the gruelling Pentathlon, and the Men's Freestyle Wrestling (86kg) was won by American David Taylor III. Another American, Nelly Corda, won the Women's Golf.
In the FunTrivia Olympics, Fifiona squeaked onto the top of the podium with a very impressive 96 points She was the only one to score with BOTH her bonus tips. Giving her a good run for the money was silver-medallist LeoDaVinci, a single point in arrears. In third place, proudly sporting his bronze medal, is andymuenz.
Congratulations to everyone, and see you all in Paris in 2024!

Wonderful write up, ozzz Great job! and thanks for putting this all together. Congratulations to the podium on a fine finish Sad part for me, I missed the bronze medal (much like a few Indians at Tokyo) through a wrong pick in the event I suggested (Men's hockey)...if only I had taken Belgium instead of Netherlands ....
